Default Badger cull in England confirmed

Yesterday the government confirmed they are going ahead with the badger cull and I'm so upset, not least because I'm vegan!

The argument is that the farmers believe badgers are infecting their cattle with TB. The government funded a 10 year study into whether a cull would stop the spread of TB where 11,000 badgers were killed to investigate this. The recommendation from this study was that this was not going to be a very effective method of managing the disease, but the government ignored this advice and decided to go ahead with the cull.

It just seems to me that we are intensively farming cows, and bad things are happening as a result, and the money-driven answer to this is to just kill the animals which aren't being profited from in an attempt to keep the money flowing. If things are going wrong, why aren't they looking into their farming techniques? Farming less cows potentially? The general thinking seems to be "we need to support the poor farmers because they might not make enough money from farming cattle" and not "we need to protect our wildlife, we do enough damage as it is" What have the badgers done wrong?!

Oh, and also the study found that when a badger set is under threat (ie when people start shooting badgers) the whole set disperses so this could actually make the problem worse.

If some people would sign League Against Cruel Sports petition I'd be really grateful.

I've signed and shared. The evidence that a cull will work seems to be non-existent so maybe they will change their minds.

There is also a poll here for the next day or so if anyone wants to vote http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...cull-justified Think signing the petition is more important because if they get enough signatures it will be debated further in Parliament, apparently.

    Thanks guys!!

Everytime I look at the LACS link to see how the petition is doing and see the picture I get a bit teary eyed :-(

I really hope it can make a difference!

It's ridiculous the way farmers can hold this country to ransom. Farming should be nationalised.

Now 38 degrees has a petition to stop the badger cull:

    http://www.38degrees.org.uk/page/s/b...ition#petition

Let's hope it's as effective as the one that ended the forest sell-off.

Please could those in the UK consider signing this new(ish) petition to get the badger cull debated in Parliament - if they get enough signatures (100,000 I think) they will have to debate it so this is one petition that could have some effect

    Thanks very much
