A Soon To Be Vegan At 14
I'm 14 and I currently don't eat meat, I drink almond milk and I avoid eggs, cheese, and butter as much as possible. I think I'm old enough to make the decision to be vegan and I'm willing to everything I can to help the animals and also my own health. My parents support my "no meat" but it's a struggle to get things like nut butter, soy yogurt and other vegan foods. We shop at Wall-Mart,IGA,Dollar General,Dollar Tree, and Food Lion. So, they will not go to Trader Joe's and the other health stores. It's hard to buy things that are vegan because where we get out food there is very limited vegan food. So, I need help on getting food from there and also some basic recipe ideas that my parents would not complain about. They worry about the cost(they try to get the cheapest food) but it's not always the healthiest and they still eat meat. Also* since I'm still growing what about vitamins? Should I be getting a B-12 supplement? What are some vegan friendly brands* if so? I just need some advice since I want to go about this the healthy way where I won't get sick! Ive read stories of babies being raised up on a plant diet, so I of course know it's possible, but living at home makes it harder when your parents think it's dumb and that I'm going a little too far with cutting out every animal product type food. And if you were a teen vegan, then I want to know your story! How did you get through the first weeks and months?

Hiya - good for you xxtokyoxx.
A lot of people are having to count pennies/cents at the moment but fortunately you don't really need to shop at health stores. I'm fairly sure that you can find what you need in the regular stores. Vegetables, beans, lentils, brown rice and so on are good foods and they don't cost as much as specialist "vegan foods". If you have any "ethnic" grocers' shops where you are you might be able to get lentils, rice and so on even more cheaply.
This thread has ideas for inexpensive vegan food http://www.veganforum.com/forums/sho...eap-vegan-food
It's probably a good idea to take vitamin B12 but I'm afraid I don't know which US brands are vegan. I expect someone else will.

Heya xxTokyoxx, first of all there is a book that advises teenage vegans http://www.amazon.com/Generation-Com...1374649&sr=8-1, if you can get it out of your pocket money or get it as a present I think it would really help you.
As Harpy said you can live as a healthy vegan just out of the supermarket. I think once your parents realise that being a vegan is healthy, easy and doesn't have to be expensive I think they'll be less resistant. Give it time and show them that you're serious about it. Good luck

Sorry, I think my link to the "cheap vegan food" thread was broken but I have corrected it now.

Hi xxtokyoxx
Welcome to the forum and good wishes for your transition. I was nearly 50 before I went vegan so you're doing a lot better than I did.
