Default Combinations that shouldn't work but do

I don't tend to bother with recipes but throw together what I've got - sometimes the results are a bit revolting but here's one that was good (was feeling even less like cooking than usual!):

    potato gnocchi
aduki beans out of a tin
    chopped raw cabbage
olive paste out of a jar
    chilli sauce

I just cooked the gnocchi and then added the beans to the water at the end to heat through. I then drained everything and stirred in the cabbage, olive paste and sauce. The crunchy cabbage went rather well with the gloopiness of everything else.

    Any other unexpected successes?

I used to really like mixing crushed garlic in to pickle, not tried it for over a decade though.

Peanut butter or humous - with anything.

Oh yes, I agree almost anything is improved by the addition of hummus and peanut butter (haven't tried both together - yet). I'm quite a convert to hummus as a sauce for pasta and vegetables now after seeing it suggested on here somewhere.

Hadn't thought of the garlic and pickle one. Raw garlic doesn't agree with me but I suppose I could roast it first.

Talking of hummus/houmous did you see this report about how it has "conquered Britain"? Might do a better job of running the country than some! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-15148342

    Peanut butter and ketchup,
Tahini and Marmite is apparently very nice too.

The broad bean and asparagus houmous mentioned in that article sounds like a weird combination but it's actually incredible. (it also has mint in it)

My supervisor at work swears by soya chicken & chocolate.
He came up with this culinary misfire when he went to a buffet and his food mixed.
I think I will give this combination a miss.

kids also like to eat butter with out anything else added....blerg. actually I think that applesauce and french fries might be good.

I really like ketchup. I pretty much like it on everything. Potato chips. falafel, tofu. Whatever i'm eating pretty much.

I've actually got some ketchup (that I bought to recreate Currywurst after our recent trip to Berlin ) but I never think of using it - I should, particularly as I think it's one of the things that they have recently decided is good for you (the lycopene compensates for the sugar presumably).

Apple sauce and chips/fries might work if the sauce was sour rather than sweet. Chips and hummus is a nicer variant on the traditional chips-and-mayonnaise thing they do in Belgium IMO.

I think you mentioned the fake chicken and chocolate combo before Firestorm - suppose if you added chillies to the chocolate it might turn out a bit Mexican?

My son eats french fries swiped through just-starting-to-melt vegan vanilla ice cream. He made me taste it, and it was surprisingly good. LOL

That whole sweet and salty combo thingy.

Yes missb, I did the currywurst thing with it but I'm not used to using it otherwise. Must turn over new leaf!

This thread reminds of of the film 'Intermission', I don't know if anyone's seen it, it has Colin Farrell and Cillian Murphy in it. But one of the characters robs a load of brown sauce from a supermarket and in order to get rid of it he starts putting it in his tea, and eventually wins over all the other characters to brown sauce in tea! I love brown sauce but I'm too scared to try it, although I imagine it would taste like some type of thick, vinegary, miso soup!

It's probably not so odd, but I'm an intense runner and I'm trying this low carb plan for a few days until Halloween night (2 more days) and this is my cheat of the day. I''m going off the low carb thing Sunday morning! Hello black beans, chickpeas, brown rice and quinoa!

    My odd creation:

    1/4 cup dark cherries (steamed)
1 tsp carob chips melted on dark cherries
    1 tsp powdered soymilk
    1 tsp raw oatmeal
2 tsp strawberry jelly sweetened with stevia

Hmm. Well I like both Marmite (or rather Natex) and coffee so I suppose I should give the combination a try, when I'm feeling strong!
