^ Yes, I agree with Blueberries, do ask him! I never know whether to feel angry at these people who 'quit' or to feel pity or something
I asked and he told me. He says that they are 'purely selfish reasons', and he does 'feel guilty'. One reason he says is that, because he consumes so many calories daily, it's hard to cook in bulk and make it varied and not expensive as a vegan. Also, sometimes he craves junk food that isn't vegan. And silly things like shopping for shoes and trainers, and that a non-leather belt he had fell apart within weeks.

I just feel really angry. This is a 'guilt' from which he can relieve himself.

I was on a course at work last week, after finding out I as vegan an 18 year old new staff member asked me "What's that?".

After I explained she said "I would die if I didn't eat meat".

I refrained from using my first response (which was not particularly friendly) and instead said "well I've been doing it for 4 years and I'm still going strong"

I don't remember the conversation correctly but here it goes.
    __________________________________________________ _____________

Friend 1: "Humberto! We need meat to survive!"

Me: "Dude! We can live on a plant diet."

Friend 1: "But God put animals for us to eat."

    Friend 2: "I agree!"

Me: "You said you didn't believe in God."

    Friend 2: "I don't."

Me *what I want to say*: "THEN WHY THE **** DO YOU AGREE WITH HIM? OH WAIT YOU'RE FULL OF EXCUSES!"

Me *what I actually said: "Dude! You might want to think before you speak!"

It's quite pathetic that some people would step out of something they strongly believe or not believe in for their own comfort.

A friend of mine said that he did not view the killing of nonhuman animals, for him to eat, as murder (as in morally wrong). He was unable to develop this thought nor was he able to answer why, for example, baby male chicks should be thrown into a bin alive to die and or be thrown into a grinder and fed to other chicks.

My dad once said that he ate meat to preserve the species. As in, why else would humans continue to allow pigs to exist if not for bacon? Mental.

    Hi Leighna

That one is not totaly mental as it happens.

If the whole world went 'abolitionist' (i.e. NO livestock, pets, zoos, safari parks, aquariums, et-al) many species would go extinct and a lot of people would rarely get to see any, but a few common species of, animals at all.

Why would we want to keep domesticated species?

Most often we f***** them up and they have many inherent problems. There are breeds of bovine that can't naturally inseminate because the bull is so muscular that he can't mount the cow. Many breeds of dogs have problems with their hips. Dalmatians have problems with their eyes. I think it's the bulldog or another flat faced breed whom can't delivery puppies without help because they are not able to chew trough the umbilical cord [that one might or might not be a myth, I haven't verified it after I heard it ages ago].

Hardly any of the species we created are adapted to a life without us. We can't justify keeping members of other species depended on us and keep them in captivity out of some "obligation to preserve the species", and certainly not just because we want to be able to see them. That would just be more exploitation. I care for individuals, not species.

    Hi BB

Don't get me wrong on this one; I am an abolitionist and I think that virtualy any price is worth paying to bring the 'breed'n'feed'n'bleed' cycle to an end.

I am also anti-priveledge though and you are correct that abolitionism would make the joys of seeing live animals a priviledge enjoyed by, relatively, a very few.

M'concern with making anything a priveledge being along the lines of this: By definition (Latin privilegium, meaning 'law'; Ledge meaning 'granted'; De- meaning 'denied'.) you cannot have some being priveledged without some being deprived.

The principle of abolitionism kinda collides with the principle of creating neither priveledge nor deprivation, if you see what I mean?

Just for the sake of livening the graveyard up a bit ...

    1. More exploitation is wrong but more priveledge/deprivation is wrong also?

    2. The cost of less animal exploitation is an increase in the priveledge/deprivation of seeing live animals?

    3. Access, or lack of access, to anything we do not want is neither priveledge nor deprivation?

    So ...

To have abolition with creating priviledge/deprivation means that any want/desire to see or interact or have access to animals needs to be eliminated?

    Dang!

I have started creating a totaly off topic line of conversation here, haven't I?

Getting to see other people naked is a "privilege" too, if they aren't showing, you ain't seeing. Or would you argue that your "right" to see others naked means you can just rip their clothes off at will? Why would your "right" to see other people naked trumps their right of self-determination? Why would it be different for non-human animals about similar things, other than some self-proclaimed superiority over them?

You're in a mindset where using animals is the default and a given "right". Abolitionist oppose using animals and if that means that there will be no more black and white cows because we stopped breeding them and they don't procreate in the wild then that be it.

    So I guess...
    3. Access, or lack of access, to anything we do not want are not entitled to is neither privilege nor deprivation?.

There are many traditional human cultures disappearing for example the aboriginals in Australia, the Inuit in the north, the native Americans... we can document their culture and preserve knowledge about them, but I have yet to hear someone suggest to put them in a zoo or start breeding them for preservation. But somehow doing that with non-human animals is just normal, and going to see them a "right".

I think humans would keep animals around in small quantities for sentimental reasons, and although there would fewer of them I think it's better than torturing thousands of them.

And for as long as it is seen as such then those who feel 'short changed' on getting to see other people naked will feel deprived.

It is the seeing of things that are not equaly available to all as desirable that causes the priveledged/deprived divide.

That is a more a welfarist scenario than an abolitionist one Leigh.

Abolitionism, by definition, means no keeping of any animals for any reason at all.

Porn is a good example of an exploitative cycle (though of whom by whom is infinitely debatable) that only exists because of a priveledged/deprived divide.

    But it is true!!!

The other thing to fear, of course, from a U.S. economic perspective would be if mankind decided to abandon wars and weapons. We wouldn't want that to happen, either

This one might actualy be right for a few reasons ..

    Based on:

    1. A vegan population needing only about one tenth of current agricultural land to sustain itself.

    And ..

    2. The massive peripheral industries (feed growing, transport, slaughter, processing, storage and freezing, etc) that the meat industry spawns.

Well .. the economy may well, in the short term at least, suffer; That is kinda the logical conclusion of decimating any large established industry?

Short term damage to the economy was undoubtedly argued as a reason for not abolishing wrongful industries like slavery and child labour though.

The dim-witted omni logic in play on this one simply appears to be this: If benefit to the economy outweighs right and wrong then should we not bring profitable industries like slavery and child labour back?

    Hmmm ..

Such people need to be made to inspect the contents of an unflushed vegan toilet and be told "Now, if your sure we can't digest vegetables then make a salad out of that!"

Maybe he went vegetarian for the wrong reasons. Don't give up on him, give him time to make the emotional connection for himself. And maybe give him some good recipes for meat substitutes.

I want him to be happy, but it makes me so sad to see him eating that stuff. I want him to be healthy, and I don't know what to do.

Every so often when the "you need to feed an animal with more calories from plants than the amount of calories you get from their meat" is used as an argument some clever person comes with "Yes, but animals graze on lands not suitable for farming" as if all animals roam free on the highlands or something until it is time to round them up.

Guess what, the Inca's already found a way 800 years ago. Surely this could be done today in a way it is suitable for modern (specialized) equipment. But it's very doubtful that it would be needed since we would require less land to begin with. And of course there are all others vertical ways of growing crops that is being experimented with.

    1) Well some of the oddest arguments I had, were actually with my old boss. She actually had the nerve to ask "tofu and turkey, what's the difference?" I told her tofu is cruelty free and no harm comes to making tofu out of soy beans. She still said that argument was irrelevant and that if I was going to eat tofurky turkey, might as well make it "the real thing."

    2) I had this guy at my work and he was telling me how he respects cows a lot and that's why he doesn't eat them but he eats dairy. I told him that the cheese we have is from drugged induced cows that live a life time of pain and misery. He claims he only eats cheese from India where the cows are treated nicely. I told him that cheese you eat at this location is from the states, and the states abuse the crap out of their cows. He still didn't believe me so one of my coworkers read the box and the box said "product of the US." After hearing this information, my coworker still thought this cheese was from India and still had thoughts that he wasn't contributing to the suffering of the cow. Sad!

    3) This isn't really an argument but it was something silly I heard this girl say. She said when she ate meat, she didn't eat babies like lamb and veal yet at the same time she was drinking milk. Milk is the reason why veal exist. So I thought, isn't that kind of hypocritical?

    4) I also had another argument with my boss and this is over milk. She asked "why don't you drink milk." and I said "well it's the milk of another species and it's weird and against all laws of nature." I also said this right after "If we are going to drink milk from anyone it should be human breast milk." I told her about an ice cream place down in the states where they actually sell human breast milk ice cream. She thought that was the most nastiest thing. I ask "Why is that nasty, it's from our own species?" and she actually replied with "So!" Some people are just so brainwashed this is the result.

    5) There are so many weird talks and conversations I have come across it's hard to think of any particular one. Just some of the stuff I have heard has been insane. Like I remember at work I suddenly had a boost of energy and lost weight and this one girl asked me what my secret was and I said "I am eating way more fruits and vegetables." and she replied back "oh that's good, I should be doing that to." then I added on at the end "and I went vegan." She soon looked at me and gave me this pitiful look and replied back with "Oh that's not healthy." It's crazy how you switch your words around and people changed their thoughts. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables is good, and being vegan is bad. Kinda sad because those two are intertwined.
I said 'Somebody should do something about that.' Then I realized I am somebody.

    Veganist,

Number 5 is exactly what one of my friends said to me when I first revealed I was vegan. She had complemented me on my clear skin after not seeing her for a long time and I told her I am eating lots of fruits and vegetables, and she said she should really do this but hates them and hates salad but eats one apple a day. I said I went vegan so naturally I'm eating more fruit and veg. Then she said "why are you doing this to yourself!?" I said "because it's healthier and I feel better now, I have much more energy now" and her reply was something like "I don't know what I would do if I didn't eat meat or dairy". This is coming from someone who used to tell me to pop an IBS pill and a pain killer everytime I ate dairy and red meat when I was with her (way before I went vegan but I wanted to avoid these things because of my allergies). She thinks you should live with your allergies, or aches and pains and pop pills all the time, she's addicted to pain killers, coffee and never sleeps and I never see her eating salad, yet she tries to correct her skin with face washes and creams and has even become broke because of it!

She thinks you should live with your allergies, or aches and pains and pop pills all the time, she's addicted to pain killers, coffee and never sleeps and I never see her eating salad, yet she tries to correct her skin with face washes and creams and has even become broke because of it!
She's like that because it's socially acceptable to be. People think you're trying to show them up if you don't have an addiction of some kind. Also companies spend millions advertising creams, cosmetics and washes that promise to make your skin flawless, pore-less or whatever nonsense and it's very easy to get caught up in it.

Just in case it makes you smile ..

When in mischeivious mood (which is always) I claim that I am only vegan because I am a cannibal in protest at being denied the only real-REAL meat. Human meat.

Allows a lot of leeway for turning the tables on t-pots who come up with that kinda BS. "You only like pork/chicken because it tastes a bit like the real thing .." kinda stuff.

Actualy allows the tables to be turned on just about any omni BS excusivism to be quite frank: "Would only eat humans bred for the purpose/hunted & killed myself/humanely raised/not as 'intelligent' as myself/would only have starved in 'the wild' if not eaten, etc, etc, etc .."

Nowt quite as amusing, in my book, as getting people in a tizzy by making them demolish all their own BS arguments themselves

"Those animals were bred for food." WTF? That is such a bizarre argument.

I guess they can say the same thing for dogs. If they say that dogs are pets but consider animals as food then they are speceist.

Apparently it's a lie that we don't like meat .-. it gets a little absurd sometimes.

Cook 'em one of these fabulous meat based dishes.

May be neccesary to fatten up a handfull of house spiders (force feed them flies or something?) if your local supermarket doesn't stock organicaly grown Tarantulas though ..

I actually loughed out loud! Who says something like that? Do he really keep himself a predator and a carnivore? They dont even think, they only want to justify their momentany interest. (If we can call autotoxication to an interest... Deliberate self-poisoning, and when they become seriously sick, they are like "I blame everyone else but me.")

Funny story. My friend (omni) has a cat which LOVES vegetables i believe carrots especially, and takes those as her snacks instead of meat they feed her. Very funny cat.

I just watched in the youtube a video, named "Davey Havok's testimonial". He is the singer of the rock band called AFI, but its rather irrelevant who he is. What is relevant, the TOP RATED comment. If you don't want to search it, I copy-paste it.

"I love AFI.But with that being said I don't agree with what Davey is saying.
Eating life to sustain your own life is the way of life. Regardless if your eating plants or meat, your are still participating in this violent circle. Even if all you eat is dead fruit falllen from a tree your still acting in your own best interest which is selfish.
Despite your lifestyle, none of us are better than the other."

And its worth 25 thumbs up...Because these kinda comments I feel sometimes that this world can not be changed. Everyone will justify their false interests without end...

That's a fun one to play with too ..

    By that logic either:

    1. None of us are any better than Ted Bundy and we should all be in prison with him.

    Or ..

    2. Ted Bundy is no worse than any of us and it is a travity of justice that he is not still roaming free practicing his perfectly equal 'lifestyle'.

Sad!
    Hi, just read that one!

Interesting, because I also had a discussion with an Indian colleague of mine who is a vegetarian.

I asked him how cows are treated in India, as they are supposedly holy animals there.

He told me that when a cow gives birth in India, the baby is taken away from the cow and killed immediately, then the hide of the calf is stuffed with grass so that the mother cow still sees it and believes that her calf is there, and continues to provide milk.

While I found that a bit hard to believe, I do not suspect he has any reasons to make up such a story - and he agreed with me that it is not really very consistent with revering cows as holy animals.

    Best regards,
    Andy

Hi there I've been a member of this forum for a while and haven't really posted before but I just wanted to share part of a conversation I had. I went vegan about half a year ago and when one of my best friends found out she couldn't believe it, and repeated over and over that she couldn't understand why someone would be vegan. When I offered to explain my reasons she seemed interested but then took every point as provocation for an argument. Finally, when I finished explaining to her, she outright said something along the lines of, the difference between us is that she doesn't think the lives of animals have the same worth as the lives of humans, and that's why she'll continue to eat meat! How sad! This really bothered me, probably because it's been my first proper run-in with someone who disagrees with veganism so much and one of my best friends at that Sorry if it's been discussed above much, just wanted to put it out there.

Heya Smursy, welcome to the forum I understand that it bothered you, I've been vegan for 4 years and I still get upset when I have those kinds of run-ins with people about veganism. My friends have varying attitudes to my veganism but I think they just leave me to my weirdness at this stage tbh!

My husband's family are the same way regarding animals being less worthy than humans. it is a common belief unfortunately. Personally I think it's terribly selfish to think we are so much more worthy to be on this planet than anyone or anything else. And even with such a belief it is no excuse for the kind of brutal treatment of nonhuman animals that people continue to support. People have used the same arguments about worthiness against jews, women, Africans, retarded people, and so many others to justify abuse and other atrocieties. Where do we draw the line?

BTW, welcome to the forum Smursy! You are not alone in your frustration! I remember the first time I was confronted and challenged for my vegan beliefs and it was a bit disconcerting but I have gotten much more used to it now and I stand my ground more firmly than ever. You are not alone!

It's fine. Sometimes it helps to let this out.

Anyways, I find it really sad that humans think they are above others. Sure animals eat other animals but we humans are intelligence and have choices. We are to take advantage of the choice we have and use it for something that is really good.

Even if the life of an animal was less worth than that of a human - it doesn't justify the cruelty and pain they go through.. sigh

That is what she said, but it is not what she means.

"The life of an animal worth more than the life of a human" ... this is the stupid "stranded on a small island with only a cow" analogy. Even Gary Francione said in his podcast that, under such circumstances (which are highly unlikely), he himself might also consider to kill the cow in order to sustain his own life.

But what she means in reality is that "The life and suffering of an animal is worth less than a minor inconvenience of a human", because eating vegan food instead of animal food is not much than that. She likes the taste and would find it inconvenient to have to think of something else for lunch. Sad.

    Best regards,
    Andy
