Thumbs up UK's First Veggie Farmers' Market in Brighton

According to the local paper, a farmers' market in Brighton became the UK's first veggie farmers' market - by accident! it was held outside a Jewish community centre, with meat stalls planned as part of the market, but at the last minute the organisers found out Jewish law does not permit the sale of meat on their premises. the meat stalls were banned, but unfortunately too late to save the lives of some of the animals who had been specially killed for the market

    see the article here

unfortunately it wasn't very well advertised, and Gorilla didn't hear about it until afterwards. however i will be going to the next one

i checked it out Tails, and it'll still be at the Jewish centre for the forseeable future, so no meat

it's only going to be held once a month though, which isn't often enough. Brighton really needs a decent farmers' market where one can regularly buy local, fresh fruit and veg, i don't know why it hasn't been organised yet.

I have a real dilema with the local farmers market in Frome.
    You can buy
100% vegan organic Crisps/Cider/Olives/Tofu/Vegan Soaps/Fruit and Veg all of an outstanding quality and very nice in taste and price but it has two stalls that sale pre-wrapped meat (not near the veg stalls).....

I don't want to stop supporting the other people who have stalls as they only profit from cruelty free foods and we are lucky to have such a wide choice every two weeks......but the meat this is the issue.....what would you people do confused bumpkin

I would quite willingly buy food from this market Snaff, your money is going directly to the cruelty-free stalls which is a big positive, to with-hold money just because there is meat at the same market would be wrong. If no-one buys the vegan stuff and they go out of business/give up having a stall there because it's not financially worth it, the meat stall(s) will still be there, thus cutting your nose off to spite your face really.

Support the Organic Vegan Soapy Cider Fruity people - whap some anti-meat stickers on the yukky stalls when no-one's looking!!!!

Cheers P.I I was thinking along those lines, its no different if you have to shop in a supermarket that stocks products made by specialist vegan companies, they know those things sell and in the end the deman goes up for the good things.

yeah Snaff i agree with Poison Ivy in fact it's probably better than buying from a supermarket, as the meat stalls don't make money from you if you only use the veggie stalls - unlike supermarkets who also make money from meat even though you don't buy it yourself.

i only posted this because i found it interesting, what with Brighton being the veggie capital of the UK if there was a good, more frequent farmers' market that sold meat i would probably use that as well, but this is the only one we've got at the moment, and it just happens to be veggie too.
