Default Any good vegan places in Vegas?

I will be visiting Las Vegas in mid-March (actually, I leave in about two weeks) and I need to find some good restaurants to check out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I was vegetarian in Vegas and it wasn't easy. Dead animal everywhere and those buffets can't be trusted. The only great meal I had was at The Luxor in their very expensive restaurant. There was a great vegan entree. It was our pre-wedding meal so the expense was worth it but overall, Vegas sucks for vegetarians/vegans.

Yup, I was married on the Strip but not by Elvis !

There are some more places listed on this site: http://www.veganvolumes.co.uk/guides...s/lasvegas.htm
I know the long life vege restaurant is good, I ate there. And the delis at the health food stores like Wild Oats are great
You can get stuff on the buffets at the big hotels onthe strip, but it's a bit hit and miss

I had a delicious vegan stir-fry dish at the Cheese Cake Factory inside Ceasar Palace.

    Default Vegan in Vegas?

    Hey all

I'm off to Vegas for 5 days at the beginning of september and was wondering about food options once I'm there!

I found a thread from 2004 about being vegan in vegas but thought (hoped) there might have been some changes since then.

The other great bit of info I've uncovered so far was this website http://vegasreference.com/vegas/vegetarian.html that heavily promotes subway lol

My husband and I are probably going to be on the strip mostly because we're not renting a car. One nice thing is that our hotel room has a full kitchen so we will be able to possibly grocery shop and do some meals ourselves. (although I'm wondering how far away the nearest grocery store will be)

I'd really appreciate tips from anyone who has been recently or is local to the area.

    Thanks so much!

I stayed at the stratosphere last (around February) and there was a small grocery store near there, it wasn't all that though and it was the only grocery store I found so don't pin your hopes on that one. The stratosphere did buffet meals with some fruit on offer but no salads etc as far as I can remember.

From my experience the customer service in most places wasn't very good either.

I don't like to be a pessimist about it but I think you'll have a hard time, probably best to take some food with you.

If you have access to a car, you can try EVOS in Henderson (Eastern south of St Rose Parkway). A Florida fast food chain, they have SOY DELIGHT veggie patties. Make sure you specify SOY DELIGHT VEGAN PATTIE or you will get a veggie pattie w/egg whites in it. They have a separate grill for the vegan patties. The chili is vegan, you can also order a salad without the meat. They are not inexpensive ($8.99 for the hamburger, air fries and a drink) but the MANGO GUAVA fruit shake is vegan and VERY VERY VERY addictive!

Ronald's Donuts are NOT to be missed.

Other than what is on Happy Cow, not much out here. I'm trying to find vegan caterers for a big family affair next month and I am having NO luck. It looks like I will be ordering 100 dozen boston creme covered in chocolate vegan donuts for my guest to eat!

The public transport system (RTC) is quite good if you are staying anywhere along the Strip. There is 24/7 service on several main roads, including the strip. The strip service includes really cool double-decker buses (called the DUECE) that go up and down the strip.

Main webpage is < http://ttpweb.rtcsnv.com/ >, with an online trip planner at
< http://ttpweb.rtcsnv.com/ >. The system map is located at
< http://www.rtcsouthernnevada.com/cat/sysmap/index.htm >. Regular fare is $1.25/one way (non-Duece) or $2/one way (Duece). You can get an all day pass for $5 (ride as much as you like on all buses in a 24 hr period).

If you wanted to try Evos, you would take the 110 Eastern bus south to Horizon Ridge and then have to walk about 1/2 mile further south to Sunridge Heights, since the bus doesn't go further south of Horizon Ridge.

Ronalds Donuts is on Spring Mountain Rd, between Arville and Decatur. They are open M-F 5am-4pm, Sat 6am-3pm and I think on Sunday from 7am-2pm. They are on the 203 Spring Mountain route. You want to get off at Spring Mountain and Stober. It is VERY MUCH WORTH THE TRIP!

They were recently named one of the best 10 "non-chain" donut stores in Vegas in one of the weekly indie papers. I went in the next day and they were SOLD OUT of all their vegan donuts! That has NEVER happened before. Their vegan boston creme with chocolate glaze is simply the best. The first time I went there, I grilled the owner about the ingredients. I figured if she knew what vegan meant, then it was OK. I scarfed that puppy down in about a milli-nano-second. I left 15 minutes later with TWO DOZEN!

Somehow, between Friday and Tuesday I managed to "visit" Ronald's FOUR TIMES!

And each time carried out a dozen donuts for work! Didn't matter what it was, if the donut had chocolate in it, on top of it, on bottom of it, near it or even thinking about being near it, I ORDERED IT!

    Updating Vegas restaurant recommendation:
FORGET about Evos, try RED VELVET CAFE instead: http://www.happycow.net/reviews.php?id=14814

I go there weekly (sometimes 2-3x/week). VERY vegan friendly. I have no qualms about recommending this for vegans. Rumor has it that they are trying to open up a vegan bakery/ice cream store next door (Temptation from Chicago it is rumored). Aneesha is an incredible baker and I know that if this happens, I will definately gain about 16,638,553,205,644 pounds!

    Hi Gorilla,
Ronalds is at Spring Mountain & Eldon St. (between Decatur and Arville)

Spring Mountain bus is route #203 (West TO Ronald's, EAST back to Strip).
    timeschedule: http://www.rtcsnv.com/transit/route/203/203(1-11-09).pdf
time points: G = Las Vegas Blvd (Strip), E = Decatur (just a bit west of Ronalds)
During the day, frequency is 2x/hour

Red Velvet is on the SW corner of Sahara and Buffalo
Sahara bus is #204 (east and west)
WEST to Red Velvet and EAST back to the strip
    http://www.rtcsnv.com/transit/route/204/204(1-11-09).pdf
during the day, frequency is 3x/hour

cost is now $1.75/each way or $3/each way (Deuce - strip bus).
    http://www.rtcsnv.com/transit/fares_passes.cfm

one day pass (24 hours) $4 (unlimited rides on all routes EXCEPT for Deuce) or $7 (unlimited rides including Deuce)
Can be purchased on bus - exact change only

    3-Day All Access Pass $15
This pass can only be be purchased at the Downtown Transportation Center, the South Strip Transfer Terminal or at ticket vending machines. Even though it's not that hot out ( ), I would suggest taking a sweater to wear inside. Most places now have the air conditioning on, full blast... so a lot of indoor places are FREEZING! I would also bring an large empty waterbottle. That way, you can refill it instead of paying the outrageous prices places on the Strip charge for water. Also LOTS of sunscreen since the UV index is up around 9 or 10.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

thanks so much for all your help Shelly, it was really useful

i found that with a bit of forward planning, it was easy to be vegan in Vegas

the hotel i stayed in was a bit rubbish for vegan food, but there were loads of places to eat so it wasn't a problem. after i arrived i went straight to bed but the next morning i went to Ronalds and bought myself a box of donuts:

they lasted really well and i ate them throughout the week!

i also went to PF Changs in Planet Hollywood, where i had the delicious Ma Po Tofu:

i went to Red Velvet Cafe for lunch on the second day and it was sooooooo good! i'm so glad it was recommended to me because i'd never have found it by accident. i didn't realise how far it was from the strip but it was worth the journey. i was a total pig and ordered the 'chicken' nuggets, vegan cheese and bacon fries, and the vegan lunch special wrap which i think was vegan cheese, bacon, chicken and salad:

i ended up in a diner that specialised in steak in the evening because my friends wanted to go, the only thing i could eat in there was the garden salad but that was fine because i was still so full from my wonderful lunch!

the last day about 20 of us had pre-booked at the Little Buddha at the Palms Hotel & Casino. their regular menu didn't look too vegan-friendly, but because we were a large group with lots of vegetarians, as well as me, they laid on a special set menu for us and all the veggie options were vegan to make things easier. i had a lovely vegetable tempura followed by a tofu and veg stir-fry (a little bit bland, but not bad at all):

thanks for the tip about the air con - you were right, it was freezing indoors! i was very disappointed with the Deuce bus service. it took me two hours to get back from Red Velvet to my hotel: the 204 bus was fine, but then i waited nearly an hour before a Deuce would stop to pick up passengers - they were all packed full. when i finally got on one it took nearly another hour to get back along the strip. the bus was stuck in traffic all the way and then the driver just sat at one of the bus stops for ten minutes and switched the engine off for no apparent reason! i could've walked it quicker.

anyway, it was an interesting city although i found it a little overwhelming by the end!

    Those donuts look amazing. I looked up Ronald's donuts though and came across this post on the happy cow website;

    Hi!
After seeing the reviews of how fantastic the donuts are at Ronald's, I really wanted to go.
One of the reviews here mentioned C&H Sugar packets at Ronald's (which is bone char processed sugar, so Not vegan) The reviewer went on to say they didn't ask Ronald if he used C&H in making the donuts. So I did; the next day I was curious and called Ronald's, I asked their store hours and I asked what kind of sugar they use in their vegan donuts, Ronald said "we use C&H sugar". I explained to the owner that C&H is bone charred so isn't vegan informed him that there are other kinds of sugar that are vegan. So at the time of my phone call to Ronald, the donuts aren't vegan

Most processed foods (like coffee and peanut butter) aren't vegan by some definitions as they contain insect parts etc.

Have you actually asked them whether they still use the same sugar? They could be vegan now for all you know

Hopefully it's just an oversight on their part they are willing to correct, it's a non vegan world and we all make mistakes.

i didn't ask them what sugar they used because they told me their donuts were vegan and i took them on good faith. seeing as i'm never going to go there again it's a bit too late for me to find this out now, but perhaps someone else who's in the area and wishes to know about the sugar could ask them.

I see no point to posting something so out of date without checking yourself, all you are doing is making people feel bad who have eaten them already.

I'll email them and ask what the current position is.

4 months isn't terribly out of date and if I could find an email address I would have asked, the point of posting it was so that people in the future would be aware and maybe someone who lives locally could check when they next visit or give them a call. Ignorance is not bliss.

Oh really? So does that mean I need to start reading ingredients lists???

I can't find an email address either, I'll give them a call tomorrow (since I get free calls to the USA on Vonage) and see what the score is since that person on happy cow spoke to them last.

I had a chat with someone there who believes the owner is looking into this matter since a few people have said something about it, from what she said they didn't realise the issue with C&H sugar and bonechar. So it is more of an educational issue.

It is a problem that C&H almost carry a monopoly on commercially purchased cane sugar and beet sugar would not give the same quality glaze as cane sugar.

So what do you do? Do you boycott this product pending further action? Or do you continue to support them with the push and gentle reminder toward them changing sugar supplier?

I guess it is up to you.

I hope they take the steps to change this as the products sound awesome.

I guess local people trying to change the sugar doesn't do it. It takes someone from halfway around the world to start the ball rolling!!!

As for me, I will not knowingly put C&H sugar into my coffee, bake with it etc. But if it means boycotting Ronald's....

And according to my friend who works in the food purchasing dept for Wynn/Encore...

    • Steve's personal chef quit within 2 days...
    • the rest of the chefs are tearing out their hair, wondering what to cook...
    • employee dining room has to have vegan food as well... AND
    • I'm going to a meeting with the majority of the chefs next week to give them ideas (and hope? )! [my friend set this up since she told me "You're the only vegan I know]

So, any suggestions as to what the vegan world wants to see from restaurants and coffee shops? Speak now or forever hold your peace!
