In response to the OP, I think vegan food doesn't taste as good as omni food, but taste isn't the deciding factor in what I eat!

I completely agree with your point here - a shit tasting muffin made by my fair hand is far more satisfying than a brilliant ready made one. Not only that but you're saving money

My taste changed a lot... I used to eat plenty of junk.

    I love fresh fruit andveg.

Thumbs up Re: "Honestly: Do you think vegan food is as tasty as the food you ate before?"

YES, vegan food is better than the food I ate before
Before being a vegan I ate more procesed food now I am actually tasting food its fantastic. I have discovered so many new things I never tried before like hummus - totally addicted to it now. I also tend to snack on nuts and seeds and eating way more fresh fruit and veg. Ironically I have tried to do detox diets before but couldn't stick with them yet now that is in essence what I am eating *shakes head* but a deff resounding yes to food being better now. I must admit that I am not a big fan of the processed 'meats' or 'cheeses' so in that respect no there not as tasty but fresh made chick pea stew, lentil soups etc then big thumbs up.

the thought of eating an animal is like the thought of eating a person. The thought of eating egg or dairy... I don't know, it just seems dirty.

That kind of sounds like I've brainwashed myself, but it's really the opposite.
Couldn't agree more I really can't handle the idea of eating animal products now (and I am new to veganism).

    Quote pavotrouge View Post
strange, isn't it? I used to hate a lot of animal products from birth on but love the vegan varieties... veganaise, cream, whipped cream... even vegan cheese!
See I haven't tried many of those like veganise or fake fish as I never liked the original ones mm maybe I should try more.

i hated seafood before i went veggie, and i like some of the vegan substitutes (e.g. fishless fingers, vegan 'prawns', Thai fish-style cakes), but i think some of them are horrible (e.g. fish pate). experiment if you want to by all means!

I personally think that vegan food is alot tastier then the horrible processed stuff i ate before turning vegan.. and to me it doesn't even matter about taste, it's about how healthy i feel.

I think it's much better! I think a good vegan cook's food will always taste better. We usually use a lot of herbs, spices, and other natural healthy flavourings, instead of relying on meat and dairy for flavour. We are forced to be more diverse and creative in our cooking, resulting in the yummiest food ever. Shortly after I became vegetarian the smell of meat actually made me sick and it always smells off; because it is. As for dairy, I feel so much better without it, and it would always leave a bad taste in my mouth;from the bacteria I presume. Eggs always made me feel sick, and if the tastes not bad enough, just think about what they really are.

actually most of my favorite foods were vegan before i ever knew what a vegan was. except for pasta alfredo that is. but being vegan is soo easy for me because i love the food sooo much. i love spicey food, the flavor that vegetables add to things, vegetable rice, hummus toast, chick pea stir fry, asian/indian food, mexican food, thai food, WOW. i really am not just saying this because i feel morally obligated. i just found the taste of plain unseasoned meat to be bland and icky. i do not miss meat.

i remember eating a mcdonalds hamburger a long time ago remembering it tasted effing amazing like my tongue wasa dancing, probably from all the fat/salt, but without all the excess fat and salt now, my tastes have sharpened a little. i feel that i generally enjoy food more than i used to. so much so that i took up cooking when i became a vegan.

I would say that omni food is better. Not because vegan food isn't tasty... vegan food is very tasty, but if you're an omni you can eat all that vegan food plus milk, cheese, eggs, meat.... I guess I'm saying that there's no such thing as exclusively vegan food that omnis can't eat.

I don't want to eat the omni foods because it's morally wrong, and the idea of eating an animal is no longer appealing to me, but that doesn't change the fact that flesh, milk, and eggs taste good to me (maybe not to you!). If we could somehow make those things without killing animals (grow them in a lab?) I would eat them (in very small quantities, as I don't believe they're healthy for me). I know the idea of growing meat is very creepy to most people, though. I have only been vegan for a few months, so I may feel differently in a few years.

If I had to make a direct comparison of the diet I ate on a day-to-day basis before being vegan and the diet I eat on a day-to-day basis now... the food I eat now is as tasty or tastier.

I never liked a lot of omni products to begin with. I used to be one of those kids who fed her meat to the dog or hid it in a napkin. Never cared for milk or poultry.

My biggest challenge was to give up cheese, but with all the other goodies I get to eat I don't feel I'm missing anything.

ALexiconOfLove: In Iain M. Banks' SF books about The Culture, people eat "meat" which has been bred from cells so no animals die or suffer.
I had no problems with this concept when I was omni but now I am not sure I would really want to eat "cruelty-free" meat... too many other good things to eat! And how healthy would it be anyway?
But it's not a major worry for now!

I think I prefer it...eating fresh fruit like strawberries, melon, nectarines, or grapefruit every morning for breakfast tastes much better that bland cereal and cows milk.

I hate vegan cheese, so no cheese pizza is good for me (but must be with extra sauce). Seeing as I hated cheese in the first place, I don't really care...

I put yes but I can't really remember what other foods taste like as I've been vegan for over 21 years'! However, my dirty meat eating husband always says that vegan or veggie things like 'sausages' or 'burgers' taste better than meat ones because they take more trouble over the seasoning and general taste.

I have to say that YES vegan food is way better than omni food. The variety in Vegan cooking is wonderful and i eat such an array of foods compared to many moons ago when i was an omni and convience seemed to prevale and the nutrional value drop severly. But then i guess anything is bland unless you work at it and put your passion in to it .. none of my vegan food is boring because i will just not allow it :P ehehehe. IMO Even vegan "junk food" tastes leaps and bounds better but then yes a clear concience (eep at the spelling .. sorry its 11.35pm here and im getting rather sleepy!) of knowing i'm living a 100%cruetly free vegan life does make everything taste a hell of alot better
Although as others have said i think is now because i have reprogrammed myself to just find omni food disgusting and repulsive .. i mean i look at it and list everything that is in it and the terrible processes a living thing had to go through for it to become "food" .. i mean how im meant to tell my mind to be tempted by such an item is no longer possible. And then you look at vegan food and the knowledge behind such a great product how can it not taste great, when nothing died or was used and illtreated for me to survive .. it has be to orgasmic !! So Vegan food kicks Omni "foods" arse .. hands down (IMO)

I think I taste my food more now - so to me it seems tastier. Possibly something to do with the lactose clogging taste buds (I've heard that is a problem).
Also - I'm much more aware of herbs and spices than I was, so I'm more tuned into the delicate and subtle flavours. This applies even in hot, salty dishes so it's not to do with blandness.
People have said to me that I can't be a 'foodie person' if I'm vegan. I think that anyone who knows me would dispute this as I am just as much a food-focused person as I always was (before I was vegan). So I say Pah! to them!

Vegan food is tastier for me, however the diet I ate as an omni was filled with bland garbage, going vegan made me expand my food choices to foods I had never even heard of before.

I find the food I eat now much better; it seems to me that there are a higher proportion of foodies amongst vegans than amongst omnis. Certainly on the evidence of this forum it seems that a lot of us are cookery book addicts. I cook something completely different each night and often chose a book at the beginning of the work and pick meals for each night from it. This is so much more adventerous than I was as an omni or a vegetarian, I'm afraid

I ate a vegan pizza the other day I made myself (except for the crust, which was store bought) and I have to say it was equally as good if not better than the pizzas I used to eat, with the added bonus of sitting easier on my stomach and not putting me to sleep.

I don't eat any better than I used to, excluding the obvious of eliminating meat and dairy. Well, I did stop drinking caffeine but that's not a part of veganism so it doesn't count. I still munch on chips and fries and Domino's pizza and top ramen and chili dogs and all of that other unhealthy crap sooo...

I think it's better because I put more time into it and have much more variety. But I think tasty vegan food is harder to find in shops and it takes a while to make at home, but it's well worth it.

Honestly, I find vegan food to be much tastier and satisfying than animal products. I used to struggle frequently with nausea, bloating, indigestion, etc. Now I feel satiated, but not sickeningly stuffed after a meal. I also don't have any guilt over enjoying snacks such as fruits and veggies or eating smaller meals frequently throughout the day.

It may be my imagination, but I swear I have a much keener sense of taste and smell since going vegan. I'm wondering if it doesn't have something to do with the fact that consuming dairy increases the production of histamines in your body, which can alter taste and smell? Just a theory, nothing really medical or scientific to prove it.

I've found that by removing animal products from the equation I am motivated to try foods that are new to me. With the exception of a couple of pre-made vegan-friendly products, I have yet to be disappointed.

Definitely better tasting. I don't get how everything needs to be covered with cheese or a cream sauce to taste good...or so the many people where I am seem to think...

A little less tasty, but that's no big deal. I'm not in it for the taste. I mean, it was easy to cling to the taste of meat and cheese, so I am quite happy that I no longer do. Tastier does NOT equal better. Plus, the foods I eat now are healthier, and that's what matters. I can rest assured I won't die of too much cholesterol.

I think food after veganising is better but this is probably due to me experimenting more with tastes and differant flavours i would not of tried before. It is having to buy specialised cook books that has inspired me to cook new things. I may of done this when i was an omni i don't know.

Hmmm, Well, I was an omni for 15 years, and vegetarian for 15... I don't remember what I ate when I ate meat... but since being vegan I've had to learn to make my own foods from scratch, or eat the same food everyday.

I took option one, which means I always eat fresh, homemade food.... so my diet is better... and my food nicer, however, this isn't because it's vegan.

As a veggie, I'd never have thought to have a blackbean buerito for breakfast (I raely ate breakfast) but I'm sure I could have something equally tasty with meat or dairy in it... I just don't find a hunking great wrap of death that motivating in the morning

Basically, I have nicer food because I put more effort in. If I ate junky vegan food such as fake cheese in every meal just as I ate cheese in almost every meal I think it would be roughly the same in terms of tastyness.

I have discovered so many tasty foods since going vegan (perhaps with the exception of cheezly, but we won't go there), and I eat a much more varied diet than I ever did before. I was never a meat and two veg kind of girl, it just seems so boring to me. The same roast dinner week in week out on a Sunday - dull as ditchwater!

I had to peut that vegan food is only a little better purely because Cadbury's Caramel has not yet been replicated in vegan form. One the other hand, I know it's a cliche, but I am cooking things from scratch much more often, eat lots more fruit and veg, and feel 'lighter': so the vegan food wins!Plus it introduced me to shallow fried tofu strips marinated in balsamic vinegar. Yummy!

I definitely enjoy food more now, as a vegan, for two basic reasons:

    1) I now know how to cook. In fact, when I decided to go vegan, I quickly decided I must also learn to cook immediately. I was afraid that if I didn't learn to cook, I'd fail at being vegan and that wasn't an option.

    2) Because I couldn't rely on what I knew to eat already, I began trying all kinds of new things and found that food was a much more diverse and interesting thing than I'd ever imagined it to be.

I do honestly prefer vegan food in almost every case. Part of this has to do with the fact that i HATE real milk (i switched to soy/rice/almond/etc. before it even occurred to me to go veg), i DETEST mayonnaise and eggy stuff, and i never cared much for most meat. So i don't miss any of that stuff. And since i stopped eating meat, i discovered so many new foods in the process of figuring out what to eat instead. Veggie Indian and Thai food and so on are so much more interesting than hamburgers!

I hate to say it, but yes, i'm one of those who kind of miss cheese as a vegan - it's the ONLY thing i miss. The vegan substitutes are, let's be honest, not quite the same. But in many cases they can still substitute adequately for it and when i really think about it, the source of real cheese is quite disgusting anyway, and who wants to eat something disgusting?

I think for some who think it's not as tasty or the same as animal product based foods, it may be a case of not trying a varied and diverse plant based diet, and trying new recipes and alternatives rather than simply 'cutting things out.' It's also far more interesting if it's home cooked/well prepared and not processed fare... the best way to experience just how wonderful vegan food is to try to new things, experiment, hone your cooking skills and look for the recipes. I have hundreds of vegan recipes from cookbooks, websites, friends and everything I've tried far surpasses what I now realise was a pretty boring diet before...

I've never been a big meat/eggs/dairy fan anyway so it's not much of a change for me lol, anything I did have that was those things has been replaced, e.g. butter.

My boyfriend finds it hard (he's omni simply because although he eats mainly vegetarian he will still occasionally eat meat) because he ADORES cream and chicken. He's had vegan alternatives but he says they're not quite the same, and vegan sour cream has a weird after taste (we had the tofutti one, and I agree it tastes a bit weird. It's fine if mixed into something else). So I understand that, though he has agreed to keep trying different brands until we find one he likes. Same with chicken alternatives.

Definately tastier, Ive had to become a lot more creative instead of just using the oven to cook. So what I do cook is usually an experiment...that often tastes very nice!

I've always been passionate about food but seriously, what made an omnivorous meal tasty? The vegan stuff that goes into it. The fruit, veges and other cool stuff. Cook up a steak without any of those ingredients and honestly it tastes crap. Once you cut out all the processed rubbish you can't eat anyone once your vegan, everything tastes better, especially since there's good odds you made it yourself.

I'm saying it's infinitely more tasty.
