Flax seed grinder?

I need to gring flax seeds for my porridge in the mornings. I have heard coffee grinders can be used but does anyone use anything else or have any advice?

A good blender would work either but you'd need to do a big batch at a time. Ground flaxseeds keep for a few weekd in the fridge or a few months in the freezer.

A mortar & pestle isn't a bad idea, deniselynn, I need to get back into eating flaxseeds and at the moment I don't have a blender or coffee grinder.

Thanks. I was thinking of buying a coffee grinder but there are two types, a burr grinder or one with blades. Do they make a mess when they are ground? I have bought the packet stuff in the past but want to do it right from now on.

I bought a coffee bean grinder from Argos and it was only £10, I grind flax everyday for breakfast - by the way ground flax makes an excellent egg replacer too.

Burr grinders are fancy expensive, I just have the blade type. You can find them second hand, if you have thrift shops.

I checked online and they sell for £15.00 now, well worth it as can use for nuts, making rice and barley flour too. You save that money quickly if you are buying ready ground flax. I buy my flax from goodness direct

Yeah I went into argos at lunchtime. They had three different ones in the catalogue so I will pick one up at the weekend.

Well I eventually found a nice Bodum bistro coffee grinder that wasn't too bad a price. It is great, and takes just a few seconds to grind enough to last me a few days.

I like to grind up a big batch and stick it in the freezer. That way it doesn't lose any nutritional value and it's all ready when I need it.

I really want a coffee grinder, now I use a mortar and pestle and flaxseeds are difficult little things to grind by hand. The m&p is great for nuts/spices etc but flax seeds are just so small and sneaky

I am really happy with it. It will certainly work out less expensive too. I only bought the bodum because I like the design of it and I am positive the less expensive ones are just as good. Any other things worth grinding and then putting in my porridge?

I bought a coffee grinder for my flaxseeds today and I am really happy with it! It only cost €10.50 and it grinds the seeds up into a really fine powder, much finer than I could ever hope to with the mortar & pestle!

You could grind up other nuts and seeds, or maybe even grind cinnamon or other 'sweet' spices

So glad the grinder is proving useful, I think its a 'must have' now although I do wish a hand powered mill would do the job it certainly couldn't cope with flax. I did try! Pumpkin seeds are wonderful things too. I'm vegan for the sake of animals not my health but the organic seeds do taste so much better. There aren't many recipes where pumpkin seeds aren't a very tastey addition.
