    Default Studying abroad?

    Hello!

I would really love to study abroad but always seem apprehensive in making a commitment. I do not want to have to go abroad and not have anything at all to eat and am not willing to break my veganism!

I am a college student, so it's an ideal time to travel!

Where would you recommend me studying? I am mainly interested in Europe!

Nothing to eat? Where would that be? I'm confused... you live in US, want to go to Europe, but don't want to go abroad? Its probably just my poor English - please explain.

And - btw - hi, and welcome!
I will not eat anything that walks, swims, flies, runs, skips, hops or crawls.

Hello - if it's eating out you're worried about, most large cities that I've been to in Western Europe have vegan or vegan-friendly restaurants. I'd say the UK and Germany are among the most vegan-friendly countries. I even went to a university in Germany (Jena) that had a separate Mensa (student dining room) for vegetarians and vegans.

When you're cooking for yourself you can prepare vegan food anywhere, obviously. As regards specialist foods like vegan "cheese", again the UK and Germany may be the easiest places to buy them, but supermarkets in most places seem to sell soy milk and stuff like that.

    Hi Brookeh5!

Europe is a wide and varied continent full of different countries and cultures, so the situation for veganism depends alot of where you go. I always find it funny when people think that Europe is one big similar place! Or that you can't be vegan in Europe!

To be honest you can be vegan anywhere, especially a large city, just what's available to you is different. I did my year abroad in and now live in Barcelona and there are great vegan options here. Berlin is famous for it's vegan-friendliness, as is London. Paris has a good range of vegan options now, by the looks of it vegan options have really developed there in the last couple of years. Anywhere in Britain or my native Ireland will have ample vegan options. I know Harpy has said that there are good options in Vienna too.

Look up different cities on Happy Cow and see what's available in each. Are you leaning towards any particular country?

I studied in three different countries and never had difficulties in finding vegan food. I'd say choose a big city, get information about where to eat before you leave if you're unsure about it, and once you're there I'm sure you'll discover so much more.

I can tell from my own experience that French universities aren't suited for vegans or vegetarians at all, but I made very good experiences in Finland, with special university restaurants for vegetarians and vegans and labeled meals.

    Brooke,

I'd say it would be important for you to say what you want to study, which language skills you have and what your available budget is (university costs can be quite different in different European countries).

As already stated, most big cities in Europe will be able to provide vegan food. I find it amazing that while I know very few vegans (none at all in my immediate working envirionment / age group), there seem to be quite a lot of vegans among students.

Just check happycow.org (or use this here forum) to find out whether a specific country is more or less vegan friendly.

    Best regards,
    Andy

    Hey Brooke,
Vienna is pretty much vegan friendly, and life here is very easy to us foreigners, even if you don't speak a word of German: almost the 100% of people speak a good English, not to mention that the English speaking community is very much large and strong here.

... and I would like to add that the universities in Vienna are quite good there and the fees (if I recall correctly) are quite reasonable in international comparison.

But of course, it would help to know some German, to follow the lectures. Unless you do an english-speaking course (which might be a bit more expensive).

Do you want to do your complete studies abroad, or do you want to take a year abroad? If so, inquire whether your university does have any cooperations with other universities abroad.

    Best regards,
    Andy
