Bit of background first...Been vegan for 6 years now and was vegetarian for 8 years before that. I work in the medical research field looking into the differences between cancer and normal cells. A long time ago, I used to test on animals. Once I saw what was going on, I quit. Now, I still work in research lab and although I don't test on animals some of the materials I used are derived from animals. I rationalize this being ok because I am researching a cure for cancer (though the likelyhood of that is minimal).
So here comes the questions. Recently something has happened to make me question all this. And now my "extreme" lifestyle of being vegan and the work I do is not compatible. I see myself as a hypocrite. How can I judge people that eat meat when I test on them? I am thinking about a career change, but am scared and unsure as to where to go next. I already tend to be pretty forward about my views, in that I dislike even being around meat and although I try not to be too rude, I do let people know how I feel. I can't help it; it's something I feel strongly about.
But has anyone else gone through something similar? Where because of an event, you ended up questioning your whole being and making monumental changes in your life?
Thanks for any info.
