Smile Animal Aid Sponsored Walk - 9th June 2007

On Sunday, 12 June at 1pm, Tony Banks will officially open Animal Aid's second sponsored Walk for the Animals on Hampstead Heath in London. He will also take part in the 10km walk so this is an ideal opportunity to meet one of the most genuinely compassionate and entertaining MPs our country has ever had.

This year, as well as the satisfaction of raising money to help fight animal abuse, spending a lovely day in the sunshine with a great bunch of people, and boosting your health with a burst of fresh air and exercise, there is the added draw of winning a short winter break in Wales. The prize will go to the person who raises the most sponsorship money.

All participants will receive a glass of bubbly or orange juice, certificate and lollipop, there will also be face painting for the kids and street theatre to spur you on when you're running out of puff! Veggies catering will be on hand to serve up delicious cold buffet snacks.

To register and request a sponsorship pack, or for more info, please ring Karin at Animal Aid on 01732 364546, extension 23, or email Karin@animalaid.co.uk.

i did this last year, and will be there again this year. anybody else fancy making a day of it?

10km is not that far Cedar, i did it in about two hours last time, going at a pretty steady pace with a couple of stops every now and then.

I bet you can't wait to skip the walk, get your face painted, grab your lollipop, delight in your certificate, and sip some free bubby that gorilla. And all in fancy dress, thats great.

I read that the best fancy dress costume gets a box of booja booja chocolates, that'd (probably) be enough to get me dressing up.

har har - if it's as hot as it was last year, i definitely won't be doing it in fancy dress, choccies or not!!!

i am looking forward to meeting Tony Banks though, i see there's an interview with him in the current issue of the Vegetarian Society magazine. last year the walk was started by Wendy Turner-Webster who is lovely (although she didn't actually do the walk with us!)

if nobody else is interested in doing the walk, any sponsorship would be gratefully received.... shameless blagging here

Many thanks to everybody who has sponsored me for the walk, i'm off there tomorrow (there's still time, if anybody wants to sponsor me and hasn't yet, i won't be sending off the money for a few days). i'll let you all know how it goes. hopefully i won't get too bad hayfever while i'm there - i was sneezing all the way round last year!!

thanks Kev. well it's the day after the walk and i'm not feeling too bad. no blisters, and only a slight aching in the legs. i met up with my friend and we did the walk together in about two hours, then had a yummy vegan picnic. it wasn't very good weather though unfortunately, pretty cold and grey. at least that meant my hay fever wasn't too bad.

i'm afraid i don't have any photos as my friend forgot to bring her digital camera (and i didn't think anyone would be interested anyway!). there might be a photo on the Animal Aid website, they took some group photos at the beginning; i'll keep an eye out for it. there are bound to be some photos of Tony Banks on there, i didn't speak to him but he was presented with a certificate of thanks before the walk. he's apparently raised £8,000!! don't think i can compete with that - i'm not sure how much money we raised yet but i'll add it all up and let you guys know. thanks again to everyone who has sent their support.

Animal Aid’s sponsored walk is on Saturday, June 9th 2007 on Hampstead Heath. Human and animal rights campaigner Peter Tatchell will be opening the walk and taking part. Please join in the fun with Peter and help to raise vital funds for Animal Aid’s educational work.

i don't think i'll be doing it this year as i'm planning on going to the Bristol Vegan Fayre. anyone else thinking of doing the walk?

(eta: i thought changing the title of the first post would change the thread title, but it hasn't worked - does a mod need to do that?)

Cool I'll email them and ask. It'd be hot but if I took water and wore my immensely unfashionable running shorts I'd be OK.

OK, I am officially doing this. I'll be running the 1.5km circuit 4 times (climbing Parliament Hill 4 times too ) and hopefully at least overtaking some walkers.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring me PM me/reply here and I'll write your name on my sponsorship sheet.

Best of luck AMF! I grew up just down the road from Hampstead Heath and spent many a happy hour running up and down Parliament Hill and flying kites there. Spent my younger adult years walking my dog there too. Aaah, nostalgia

    Well, I did it
Got a bit lost on the first circuit so I ended up running about 7.5 miles rather than 6.2! Still veggies catering was nice and I survived, despite 24 degrees humid weather

Well done, AMF! That's quite an achievement - it was so muggy today I almost reached my expiry date just sitting in the Tube, never mind running 7.5 miles.
