I'll take the combination of food where I put a million things in a huge bowl and pick them out one by one! But seriously, I don't know how I could pick just one food. It would pretty much kill eating for me, I feel.

What is meusili? Is it the same thing as granola?

Pancakes!!!! They are great for dinner! I should expand my variety and eat fruity ones (I eat buckwheat ones and plain ones right now). Topped with maple syrup or applesauce, it is the perfect meal when I have a sweet tooth!

    1. Homemade multigrain bread. Plain. Toasted and crusty and delicious!
    2. Mackintosh apples
    3. Hummus. Any sort. Preferably served with cucumbers for the crunch. ;D
    4. Pineapple, especially Maui Gold.
    5. Steamed dark green veggies... broccoli, brussel sprouts, etc. Yeah, I'm weird.
    6. Vanilla Silk with a few drops of peppermint extract... it tastes like a candy cane!

    9. Potato and onion/leek soup.
    10. Wholewheat shreddies! With fresh berries and vanilla Silk.

Salads [it's not hard to make a different salad every night. ]
[that goes for fruit salads for breakfast too]

Anything between two pieces of awesome bread
Hemp Granola with almond milk, banana, berries, flax and raisins

Vegan pizza from a place called Glass Nickel Pizza Co.
[i get super thin crust.. so there's barely any crust.. then sauce, then incredible amounts of veggies- they've got everything.. i usually get these veggies on it: green pepper, tomato, mushroom, onion, spinach, corn, brocolli, red pepper, artichoke hearts [mmmmmmmmmmm], black olives and then sometimes i'll get cilantro or something else.. EVERY time the crust can't even support the toppings! it's great.]

I like beans.. like the "rainbow mix" with GOOD ketchup and mustard.. mixed.

I have to be honest... my family loves pancakes...but i don't
And to be even more honest, I really dislike breakfast foods.
But my vegan family LOVES them. Aughhhh,
That just means I have to wake up and cook which I don't mind.
As long as my husband can take care of the little one and if he
can wake up...aughhhhh, that is another story.
    Anyways...

popcorn is my alltime favourite food. Yum! Actually I love corn in all its forms. Creamed corn in a toasted sandwich, kernels in salad, baby corn spears in stir-fry, whole corn on the cob done on the barbeque, cornbread (I have a sweet potato cornbread recipe that gets demolished by non-vegans whenever I make it!), corn chips with salsa (or corn relish )

I also love falafels with hummus.

    & pimento stuffed green olives

    & cherry tomatoes

    & really crunchy apples

& miso soup with tofu & seaweed

& toasted muesli with rice milk

& plain roasted nuts (cashews & brazil nuts are my favourites, although walnuts make a close third place)

A cup of green & black's cocoa with soy milk is pretty good too!

Chocolate zuccini bread! Yum! My mom used to make a non-vegan version when I was little.

Whole foods is 2-hours away. I went there when I was there for a few weeks. My town is SO small. The grocery store doesn't even have veggie burgers!

i've just had a thai green curry and although i made it myself it was deilicous! I tend to get into a rut, making the same few dishes again and again, but I made the effort to look while shopping today (not just on automatic!) and got the cocnut and fresh lemongrass i don't normally buy.

And tomorrow I intend to make a risotto with a little gem squash *licks lips*

yay awesome thread! I've only been vegan for a few weeks, but I've already developed a list of foods that are to die for. In no particular order:

    1. Portobello mushroom cap sandwiches with vegan mayo, onion, dill pickle, and spicy brown mustard
    2. Trader Joe's vegan oatmeal chocolate chip cookies
    3. Vanilla soy milk
    4. Gardenburger brand BBQ riblets (omg these are so delish, if you used to like McRib sandwiches at McDonald's, this is definitely something you should try!)
    5. Trader Joe's marinated mushrooms in garlic
    6. Trader Joe's thin crust vegetable pizzas
    7. Baked potato with vegan butter, chives, salsa and/or and BBQ sauce (can you tell I love BBQ?)
    8. Tofu deli turkey

I'm sure I'll be coming up with more stuff once I learn how to cook! Now I actually need to read over this thread so I can get some more ideas for snacks/meals.

    Smile Whats your Favourite Recipe?

Any foods that you guys like to make? I'm looking to steal some ideas

My fav recipe is chilli, I tend to throw some random stuff in depending on what looks nice when I go shopping. This is what I put in the last one I made though.

    6 Tins Chopped Tomatoes
    2 Tubes Tomato Puree
    5 Mixed Peppers
    2 Tins Kidney Beans
    2 Tins Lentils
    1 Tin Haricot Beans
    500g Mushrooms
    4 Onions
    Garlic
    Chillies
    Dijon Mustard
    Black Pepper

All i do is fry the mushrooms and the onions and then chuck everything in a big pot and cook it for about 20 mins. Just remeber to taste it as you put the chilli's in, I threw a few too many in the one Even the dog had to think twice about eating it.

Default What Vegan 'Specialty' Foods Can You Not Live Without?

I'm fairly certain I've seen a similar post, but I did a search for grocery lists, etc. & didn't find what I was looking for, so if there is a thread somewhere else & you can point me to it, that would be great, if not ...

Tomorrow I'll be traveling down to a fairly large HFS & I will be looking to buy some yummy vegan foods that I can't find in my local mainstream markets.

I know I am definitely getting some vegan mayo & some Tofutti cream cheese.

What are some other foods that you just can't live without that you think I should give a try?

[I'm looking for things that a mainstream market would most likely not carry & I will be taking a medium sized cooler so that I can buy some frozen/refrigerated items.]

Hmmm maybe if you can find those tofu's that have herbs and stuff in them, you might like those, I find them quite interesting. I think there is one called 'grafitti' that has stuff like veg in it, and there are others that have various herbs or flavourings in them, which are nice for a change. They are just sold in blocks, over here at least.

I also look for different fake meaty things when I go to big HFS, not because I always like them, just for things that I don't normally have that look like they might be nice to try.

And larger, more cost effective, bags of staples such as rice, lentils, tvp if you eat that, etc...

But mostly I'd say just go there and browse and close your ears and just pay when they say how much it costs!! I always just hand over my card and not look because it's always a huge bill for what little stuff I seem to have!

I'm happy to say that I could live without all of them

Tofu isn't a specialty vegan ingredient, it's been used by non vegans for hundreds of years. The same goes for soya milk, lentils etc. Most products that vegans view to be specialty are infact just the omni equivalence of convinience food. These days the range of world ingredients available in most first world countries is fantastic, most of things like tofu, soya milk etc can be made yourself if you can't buy it in shops.

Talking of vegan ingredients, those of you still buying tofutti may want to run a search on this forum for several of the letters that members have recieved from them saying that the sugar they use in their products has no traceability - i.e. there's a significant chance it's been refined with charred animal bones. I'm currently trying to get them to either cease using untraceable sugar or not claim their products are vegan.

I could definitely live without any of them, and I'd eat a lot better, too, as most of them seem pretty unhealthy . I do enjoy Plamil Mayonnaise but I could (and have) lived without it.

Sometimes I blow a load of cash on 'Vegan' foods (mostly now as I don't want my son to feel like he's 'missing out') but usually i end up feeling like I could have made something MUCH better out of scratch ingredients .

If I were you I'd look at some recipes and decide from there. There's no point in others telling you what they eat (a lot of people love vegan cheese and I can't bear it) then you buying it, perhaps not liking it and spending a lot of money in the process...
Blackstrap molasses is pretty versatile - you can use it in muffins, desserts and also for adding depth to tomato sauces. It's also high in iron. When I go to the health food store I normally buy nut butters like tahini, again because they can go in hummus, smoothies or on toast, a variety of things. I also like tofu hot dogs - not too processed and quick to prepare. Happy shopping

The only thing I couldn't live without is vegan margerine (Pure) because then I can make my own bread and pastry. Other than that I tend not to use many vegan products as we cook fresh food every night.
However, I would be quite sad if we couldn't get Redwood sausages and Tofutti cream cheese any more!!!

I use a couple of sunflower spreads that are vegan, but like tahini, coconut milk, tamari and a few other vegan products I use, they aren't really vegan speciality foods...

alpro soy milk, nutritional yeast, tofu... and almonds and dried fruits
I occasionally use tofu or soy milk when cooking, but - like Mr. Flibble wrote - these products have been around since long before the word vegan existed, it's just that they aren't commonly used in our animal-product-obsessed world...

I just checked my fridge and the only items I have that I would consider "vegan specialty foods" are nutrtional yeast and Earth Balance margarine. And I could live without the margarine, so I'd have to say the Red Star. My diet would be pretty bereft of B-complex and zinc without it and it's probably where I get a lot of my protein.

So I literally might be unable to live without it.

So I read other responses about how nutritional yeast and other items aren't vegan specialty foods. Tofu, dried fruit, etc., I get. But I don't know anybody who isn't vegan who eats nutritional yeast and my jar of Red Star says "vegetarian support formula" on it. Which is why I classify it as vegan specialty food.

What would you guys say makes a vegan food a specialty?

What would you guys say makes a vegan food a specialty?
I'm probably be the least to know, since I don't eat anything I consider 'vegan speciality foods', but if I should guess, I suppose that term covers 'veganized' versions of non-vegan foods, like vegan mayo, or fake meat, like seitan?

But then again, wheat gluten based meat 'substitutes' have been around in Asia for ages. "Seitan has been a staple food among vegetarian monks of China, Russian wheat farmers, peasants of Southeast Asia, and Mormons. People who had traditionally eaten wheat had also discovered a method to extract the gluten and create a seitan-like product." (Link).

Maybe vegan/vegetarian specialty food products simple are 'food products that vegans/vegetarians use more often than other people'? Or 'products that wouldn't have existed if vegans/vegetarians wouldn't have existed'?

I can live without any 'vegan products', but like pegulina, vegetables are my source of pleasure, as well as fruit and nuts. This weekend I bought a lovely pawpaw, a pineapple, and a few bananas. I know the bananas are expensive, but don't cost as much as people spend on cakes or cookies.

I don't usually buy a lot of specialty stuff, except I have to say that it would be hard for me to live without earth balance margarine. It is great for baking, making icing, mashed potatoes, garlic bread, buttering toast, etc. Also, soymilk, so I am glad you can get that anywhere now adays!

But even though I could live with out them, it is fun to try new things anyway, so I will say Amy's frozen dinners (i love the veggie pot pie - 1 is vegan), Amy's canned soups are good too, Tofurky Hickory Smoked deli Slices are nice, and sometimes I am in the mood for a Tofurky Sausage (they make keilbasa, itallian sausage and bratworst - not big on that one). Sometimes I like Gardenburger Riblets and LightLife Smart Bacon and Smart Links breakfast sausages.

ImEarthKind makes a good vegan cheese called Follow Your Heart Vegan Gourmet.

As far as sweets, Wa Guru Chews are yummy, as well as Newman-Os Chocolate Creme sandwhich cookies and Soy Delicious IceCream and Temptations from the Chicago Soy Dairy. Chocolate Almond milk is good warm and cold, and there are some good soy puddings.

I also like Stonewalls' Jurquee and you might want to try Road's End Organics Macaroni and Chreese because some people really like it, allthough I could live without (you do need soymilk and margarine to make it).

Fantastic foods makes tvp like instant meal mixes - veggie chili and taco mix and sloppy joes which are good.

Tofutti does make good soy cream cheese and sour cream, allthough whenever I buy it it seems to be in my fridge for months as I never seem to have any use for it. But if you do, this stuff does taste pretty good.

soy yogurt is good - I like stoneyfield farms O'Soy and one other brand I can't think of now...NOT silk, which I find runny and gross. LOL.

But mainly I buy veggies and fruits and lentils and beans, etc like others mentioned. And tofu and soymilk and sometimes tempeh.

Oh, I really really really like TINGS. They are like a vegan cheeto made with nutritional yeast. Which you should buy some nutritional yeast because lots of veg recipes call for it.

Here is the link I think you were looking for - it was in the America forum. Best Vegan Products I think the name is.

This is probably really naive of me, but why are the bananas so expensive? Where are they grown for you guys in Australia? I just ask because they're the most reliably inexpensive fruit here. Never more than a dollar per pound, while organic pineapple is offen over $3 per pound.

You may not know this, but earlier this year a cyclone hit Queensland (north Australia) where a substantial quantity of the bananas are grown in this country, so the price of bananas skyrocketed to about $15/kg, we have been told they will start to go down in the next couple of months... it was a tragic year

I keep nut. yeast on hand and also lately quick cooking "grains" amaranth and quinoa. I love chicken-less patties and will eat them exclusively until they are gone Every weekend I go to WHOLEFOODS and get a rice dream "vanilla" [carob] oatmeal cookie frozen confection and an odwalla green foods drink. I also like the O' Soy yogurts (RASPBERRY! :-D) and think all other yogurts are rubbish. Oh, definatly Amy's black bean burritos and soup, but NOT the chili, which tastes like well, black beans. Lame.

Lately I have been using a lot of vegan protein powder *ducks from the stones*
