I agree with the adding any kind of walking into your day, every little bit helps. Maybe give into the fad and get one of those step counters? Tigerlily has posted before about her weight loss and i believe she added walking and it helped a lot.. .you could try asking her as well.

yes walking definitely helps me. ive lost nearly 20 pounds since i moved here (and 46 in total from when i was pretty overweight a few years ago)

all i do is eat less and exercise more. i dont usually do regimented exercise however. really i just add in a walk almost everyday. (nothing hard core, just a nice walk) and i eat around 1200 calories. it works great!

I lost 64lbs with weight watchers. I kept it off for a year but I am pregnant now so I'm going to put some back on (not 64lbs though).
Top tips from a big loser (in a good way)

    1. Drink lots of water. Start with 4 glasses a day, then 6, then 8, up to 12 a day if you can but not in one go! If you think you are hungry drink we mistake thirst for hunger. If you are really hungry then you'll still feel rumblings after the water.

    2. Do not skip breakfast, eat something even if it's just a banana. Studies have shown that women who eat cereal for breakfast tend to weigh less than women who eat other foods or nothing even when their daily calorie intake was the same. There was no difference for men.

    3. Don't cut your calories too low. About 1,200 is right if you want to loose 1-3 stone if it's more than 3 have 1,400.

    4. Make sure you eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day but don't force yourself to eat loads of salads if you don't like them. Strawberries are a slimmers dream when they are in season. Plums are nice too. Try a new fruit or vegetable every week.

    5. Don't cut carbs just reduce bad ones; cakes, biscuits, crisps, white flour and white bread are some of the baddies. Potatoes, pasta and rice (preferably wholemeal) are filling and give you energy. Porridge and weetabix are great slow-release carbs to start the day.

    6. Allow yourself a weekly or daily treat like two glasses of wine on a friday night or a bag of chips. If you prefer daily treats a few squares of chocolate is good, break it into portions and put them in the freezer.

    7. Don't try to loose more than 1lb a week any more is a bonus remember the quicker it comes off the easier it is to pile it back on again.

    8. Exercise. If exercise means having to change TV channel without the remote 10 minuets a day is enough to start with, but do it.

    9. If you make a mistake forget it. If you make a big big mistake forget that as well, the only way a diet will work is if you don't give yourself permission to turn one biscuit into a full-blown fridge raid.

    10. Forget supermodels they are unhealthy. No woman should have to try to look like that. If your mum, sisters etc are curvy then you are probably not ment to be a size 8.

As you can see I know a bit about this but the best advice for an overweight person is be nice to yourself now. You are entitled to feel attractive and valuable whatever size you are. Don't wait until you reach whatever size or weight before changing your image do it now. Get a haircut and a facial and buy that nice outfit in an extra large. No-one can see the label but they will see a happy glowing person. Good luck.

It's simple arithmetic output needs to be more than input.

You need to exercise at least 4-6 x per week cardio 40 mins plus.

Weights at least x2 per week either full body or split (legs and back or arms and abs for eg). This will keep your metabolism humming.

Watch your diet. Write everything you consume down for a week and check out if your overindulging or eating the wrong foods. If not just keep on with your diet otherwise cut back to 5 smaller meals per day and don't eat anymore after your last meal.

Most people who have lost weight have used this method and won. It's a healthy lifestyle change - not a diet.

    Good Luck

One who is interested to reduce his/her weight seriously, should not eat food stuffs after 7 pm or 8 pm should sleep around 10.30 or 11 pm.

I mean to say that one should be empty stomach while going to bed.

Sunset time in India varies from 5.40pm during winter and 7 pm in Summer, so I do not eat any thing after Sunset, till next morning.

Food enjoyed during the presence of Sunlight or in day time get digested very well and keep you healthy too.

    Hi everyone,
Being vegan has not helped me to lose any weight. I still eat too many things, I believe I am an emotional eater. I love nuts, trail mix, chips and in general I just eat too many carbs and not enough protein. I wish I could stop this snacking habit of mine! I have at most 10 pounds to lose but it is still distressing. How do I ditch the junk?

It's hard isn't it? I struggle with this to. Some people say you should work treats into your diet carefully so as not to overindulge.

This works for me. I allow myself a 2 small treats nearly everyday. EG 2 small pieces of dark chocolate and a small soy icecream cone. Knowing that I am able to do this and still lose weight keeps me on track.

I exercise a lot to help burn calories and boost my metabolism. I've heard weight lose is about 20% exercise and 80% food intake and I agree with this.

You could also try 5 smaller meals a day and if your hungrey and craving junk in the evenings make a smoothie.

Good luck. And check previous posts on this thread they have a lot of info that has worked for others.

I just want to add to what Manish said. It does make sense not to have anything heavy after sunset.

It is proven that the digestive system weakens with sunset everyday and this is due to the adaption of the body to daily metabolic activity. Similarly the system is its strongest in the morning, and hence it is not good to skip breakfast.

A heavy dinner before going to bed is harmful as it does not digest properly and accumulates as fat!

plus you dont rest or sleep as well because the body cant rest to its full potential as its busy digesting the food in the stomach.

foxytina, you will have to do it for long period of time, gradually it will come down.

Sunset time presently is 6.40 pm, I finish my last meal at 5 pm and my last glass of water at 6.30. Then I do eat/drink anything till 8 am next morning i.e. 48 minutes after Sunrise.

I do not eat any root vegetables. May be you try to cut down Potato.

I usually eat my main meal at around 6pm but I always have something to eat before going to bed, a banana or a glass of soya milk, occasionally a slice of toast and I don't have problems maintaining my weight. My stomach is always growling just before I go to bed and I wouldn't sleep well if I was hungry.
I know a lot of people find not eating after 6 or 7 helps them but personally it doesn't make a difference for me.

I have difficulty with the eating late thingi work 1-9 three days, and i hate eatin in front of people.it was a proper phobia but its a little better now...i hate eating convinience food or food that isnt what i would call healthy so i tend to eat just before and after work, maybe with a cereal bar or bag of crisps in between and coffees.i also like eating when i get my free time at home on an evenign.i love to cook and it relaxes me and helps me wind down and relax and know its 'me' time KWIM?i wouldt like to get in from work and not be able to make food for myself.but i dont eat rubbish.maybe this is why i have the extra weighti know a few nutritianists thought say its ok so long as you dont eat 2 hours or less before you sleep?

I used to be horribly afraid of eating anything in front of anyone.. mainly boys though. I have since grown out of it a bit, but i'm still self conscious about it, mostly because i always seem to be eating something great that no one knows about.. or it'll look strange.. or smell really strongly.. so yeah. I try to find a nice place where i can eat in peace [not the bathrooms though! you don't need that sugarmouse.. tell those others to F off! ] But i think it does help to have food that isn't so all over the place.. but im not sure. now i think im just rambling.

I didn't eat at school for just about my whole time there as I had a phobia about looking stupid while eating.

Also I couldn't eat the same food as the other kids (pies etc) ao I always felt I would be questioned etc.

As a result I grew into a binge eating adult.

As a kid I would get home from school and scoff almost a whole loaf of bread, I would be so hungry.

As an adult I would end up scoffing foods of restriction (cakes, choc etc).

I don't care about eating in public anymore but the binge eating is always a struggle.

I have no idea how much weight I've lost because I don't have bathroom scales ... but I've dropped at least a full dress size in six weeks.
I know I've lost 5cm (2 inches) off my waist and more off my hips!
(A happy if unexpected side effect of going vegan.)

Now I have the "problem" of needing new clothes because all my old clothes fit like a tent.
I posted the above in early March & I finally got around to weighing myself this week. I've lost 12 kilos (about 26 pounds, I think.)

Just shows how fattening cheese is!

people awlays seem to want to know what you re eating and it upsets me.i wish it didnt becasue it would make me a better vegan enthusiast! .
I totally understand how you feel! I just hate eating at uni, because my friends always stare at my breadroll as though it were from mars. Then after having stared at it for 3 hours, they usually ask: "what are you eating ? And then I have to list everything at's on the roll...arrggghh!!..whyyyyyyyy is evrything that's not cheese or ham not "normal" on a roll?!?!

It's even worse when i bring stuff like nuts or fruit to eat (coz I avoid wheat flour)...what with their stares, I almost feel guilty for eating the stuff.

Will you get it into your head, people, that staring continually at the food someone's eating is rude!!!!!

Afterall, I don't scrutinise your corpse-on-bread from all angles, commenting on it and asking for its chemical composition. Arrghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Sorry had to get that out..

Ditto. It's sooooo annoying when nonvegans ask about the food. okay so i only know nonvegans, but it's just WEIRD. I feel like i'm on stage or something.. like if they watch me eat it i start being worried about my chewing etc. it's just a stupid situation. hahaha

    Thank you, Ladyaprille.

I was already a vegetarian before I went vegan in January - but I used to eat cheese with absolutely everything!!!

I don't know about a "healthy regime", but I cut out chocolate, cheese, (hot) chips, & ice-cream. (I've almost cut out sugar too.) I now eat brown rice (instead of white), wholemeal bread & pasta, low-fat vegan ice-cream (as a treat), and I've switched from "regular" soy-milk to low-fat soy milk. I have basically gone from a high-fat diet to a low-fat one, simply because it's hard to eat a high-fat vegan diet. I eat more fruit & vegetables now, plus tahini and other nut spreads. In the local supermarket I discovered tasty and convenient veggie-burgers made with lentils & chickpeas too.

As for activity: I walk everywhere I can and avoid cars whenever possible. I started exercising again yesterday after a long break. I find weight-training works best for my body-type. (Short & small boned.) I also find "Callanetics" works amazingly well. Have you heard of it?

I haven't actually been dieting, though, (I gave up years ago), but going vegan has just naturally kick-started my weight-loss!

My friends think i'm weird, but lately i've decided to refuse rides from them.. both to their houses or home from there. I just like to walk or ride my bike.. plus, then they don't need to use their car and pollute when my legs work just as well!!! I like it. I haven't told them exactly why though. they already think i'm nuts, i think if i tell them anything else about me and my trying to help the environment they're going to think i'm insane. It really does help though, with everywhere i go during the day [classes, work, YMCA, home, etc etc etc] i bet i get a decent amount of exercise in in one day. hm. good.

Wow thats amazing - 12 kilos'. I have 7 to go and now weigh 72 kilo's. I get to buy myself a present when I get to 70 and aghain at 65 as I'm focusing on 5 kilo goals. I think bread is my main weakness. It's the only one I can think of.
