No I got the info off of vegan campaigns. I think some of the others saw it in a magazine!

The taste of anything in my mouth for 5 seconds does not equate to the beauty and complexity of life.
I haven't seen it so far. I did have a quick look to see if there was a leaflet in Waitrose today but I couldn't see one. (The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if they've removed them all after a barrage of complaints!)
Agree...
There is also something fishy about the ASA not dealing with website adverts.... i.e. if waitrose wrote on their site "the Advertising Standards Agency are Sh*T", would they not be able to do anything? does this mean anyone can advertise anything on a website?
I have dropped a line to the Vegan Campaigns contact address to ask where it has appeared in print - will pass on any reply that I get here.
Not sure - also I'm not sure whether it's technically an advert. The flier can be downloaded here
http://www.countryliving.co.uk/index...no_countryside
- but it's just the same as the one on the vegan campaigns site I think.
I got this back from the vegan campaigns people:
Leaflets have been given out in their shops by the exits and tills. Its also up on their website.
Kind regards
Will have another look for the leaflets on my next trip to Waitrose.
No, still can't see them in my local Waitrose so perhaps they have been pulled.
no leaflets in my branch either...
That's a result then, probably, isn't it? Unless they reappear of course!
I went into Waitrose and couldn't find any either.
The taste of anything in my mouth for 5 seconds does not equate to the beauty and complexity of life.
Right... I went into Waitrose and had a look in the country living magazine (every page! but did not buy it) and found the advert... except they changed the slogan to "fairtrade for british farmers". I took a picture with my phone... if anybody can get hold of the july issue that would be brilliant, because I think they might have used the "wrong" slogan for the July one (maybe not many people had complained yet!)

Can he really have said or written "more power to your jolly old elbows"? Sounds like something Private Eye would make up.
Lol. Lets face it, hes not the brightest spark.

Thank you for your further correspondence.
The slogan 'no cows no countryside' was created in good faith with our
campaign Partners Country Living magazine and Farmers Guardian
newspaper as a metaphor for illustrating the strong relationship between
farming and the British Countryside. Our campaign has run throughout the
year and also looks closely at the impact of the arable sector on the
British Countryside, carrying the slogan: 'no farms no fields'.
Waitrose is committed to minimising the impact of its operations on the
environment at all levels of the business. You may be interested in a
scheme we have just launched with our Waitrose Select Farm Milk group
of farmers, which aims to set aside a minimum of 10% of their farmed
land for the enhancement of wildlife habitats. In collaboration with The
WildLife Trusts, these farmers are demonstrating strong commitment, in
some cases dedicating up to 20% of their land to be developed in this
way. We feel that, in spite of difficulties within the industry, this
demonstrates our pledge to sustaining agriculture in its many forms in
the UK, while taking
care of the environment and nurturing the landscape for future
generations to enjoy.
We have had a very strong response to the campaign, both from industry
opinion leaders, to farmers and the public in general – some 27,000 of
which have now signed a petition calling for ‘fair trade’ principles to
be applied to British farmed produce. At Waitrose, we believe that UK
farmers, whether they be livestock or arable, deserve our passionate
support through fair prices and respect.
Thank you very much for your interest in the campaign - we very much
regret that you do not like the slogan, but do hope that this will
explain our thinking.

"in good faith" - ha, what sort of argument is that? They must have been spending too much time with Tony Blair.
btw, that is also a standard reply (although a better one), my friend also got that very same email...

no great shakes tho
Just an upmarket supermarket, but owned by the staff directly.
Confusingly, the Co-Op isn't really a co-op - it's a membership organisation that assumes members are customers. Waitrose is a real staff co-op.
Apparently that's why they got a bad name among animal activists years ago. The person who set the firm up thought that everybody should have a taste of the good things in life such as a weekend hunting party in a stately home, so he arranged it!
For years Waitrose were slow to stock veggie stuff but they seem to be catching-up now. They also promise a fairer price to farmers - UK or everseas - and put the farmers' pictures on the food labels!
I've been looking up how to get a rare bargain there, as they don't do any loss-leader ranges. The two-for-one offers are sometimes quite good and their own credit card gives 1% cashback in their own stores. And loose veg is a fair price. Oddly enough my local newsagent, who is a Jain, stores some 99p veggie hotpots which are cheaper than supermarkets.
I love Waitrose and find they stock by far the best range of vegan food and toiletries out of the supermarkets. They also sell Ecover cleaning products(although I understand they are no longer vegan unfortunately.)
"Only after the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught [and] the last river poisoned;only then will you realise that money cannot be eaten"
hheheeh! me too! and condusingly some of their 'free from' range has meat in it. yes! your actual meat! i think sainsbury's has really gone downhill. Not so long ago one of the checkouts girls asked me "what is this?" to my bag of potatoes and last week the checkout boy didn't know what a leek was. hmmmmm.
most of the time I shop in waitrose, best supermarket organic veg and the best supermarket ethics. yay!
there is no waitrose branch in liverpool i know what you mean about the egg in the products. It also annoys me when veggie food had milk "proteins" in for what seems to be no reason.
That Waitrose wine list is very useful, thanks.

Yes, it is - I tried that very search the other day and hardly anything came up, but I suppose they must have been doing maintenance.
Unfortunately not all the Wine Direct wines are in the stores but you can always print out the list and take it with you.
I wish i had a waitrose nearby... i get 12% off too which would make it cheaper!
I work for John Lewis, and i must say i fully support them as a company. Even the things i dont support ethically (like the meat and dairy they pride themselves on) are way above the rest. Waitrose dairy farmers are part of the partnership, and they are encouraged to put aside sections of their farms as natural wildlife, and greatly increase the welfare of the animals, without losing money. Its still dairy farming obviousy but its a hell of alot better than most!
Unfortunate our beloved Budgens is closing down & is to be replaced Waitrose.
A couple of questions:
1. I'm I right in thinking it belongs to the John Lewis group and if so do their big-wigs still go grouse shooting?
2. Do they label vegan products / do they stock many?

They were voted the best supermarket for vegans in last year's Animal Aid supermarket survey. So there is probably information about on them on their web site.
I think only Co-op and Sainbury's explicitly label items as being suitable for vegans. But Waitrose are the only supermarket chain I know of to sell tofu wieners.
Michael.

They used to sell the most wonderful focaccia. In fact, the best focaccia I've ever tasted. A couple of years ago they stopped, and now my attraction to Waitrose has diminished.

They said they'd stop the grouse shooting, I believe. ETA this link http://www.animalaid.org.uk/h/n/NEWS...ing/ALL/1047//
Our one does have a some specifically-vegan products like the Taifun tofu sausages (as mentioned by Michael) and various things in the "free from" section. I think as supermarkets go they are quite good for fruit and veg: they have quite a lot of stuff that is some combination of organic, fairtrade or local.
We get a weekly organic veg delivery but Waitrose is where I usually go if I need to top it up. I'm afraid I don't know what Budgens is like so can't compare.
Waitrose is the only supermarket I've seen selling the VegiDeli fish-style fingers!

They sell those in ASDA and H&Bs aswell. Well at least where I live anyway

I never shop in Asda - that's really impressive. (But I'd call H&B a health food shop, not a supermarket.)

Ta very much for the link you to you all, maybe the arrival of Waitrose won't be too bad. Budgens did pretty well being a more budget shop. It even started selling organic fruit and veg and tofu, which isn't bad for a little town.
Is that happening with all Budgens shops? Cos the one next to where I work on Porchester Road in West London is also being closed and replaced with a Waitrose.
Budgens changed from being a chain to a franchise some time ago, so maybe one of the franchisees has sold their stores?
Michael.

Michael, you know everything.
Incidentally, where do babies come from?
Well when two swans love each other, the cob will gather reeds and grasses which the pen will then use to build a nest that they will reuse for the rest of their lives...

I just hope they sell Crazy Jack dried fruit, that's what I'm missing the most....
Hmm, I'm not sure ours does sell Crazy Jack - I think they used to but may now sell an own-brand equivalent. Other places have the Crazy Jack ones though - health food type places if you have any of those where you are?
I'm extremely upset with waitrose for building the first store in warwickshire 5 miles from our house (1 mile of course from my commute home) and not in walking distance.
I've always been a fan of waitrose and their new store (openned yesterday) is the best I've been in before. They have a *lot* of vegan food (no labelling sadely) including organica, fudge and a very impressive collection of alcohol (things that I've only seen online before and at better prices than). The fruit and veg is a chronic rip off and most things are overpriced, but I certainly expect to stock up there every couple weeks on the way back from work.
The Harrogate ASDA started stocking the Redwoods fish fingers and chicken styles pieces earlier this year but they vanished after about 6 weeks! They were always "rolled back" too! I was well annoyed.
I wrote a polite letter to the store manager though (his name's always on the receipt) and handed it in at their customer services desk and i got a personal reply a few days later saying it may take a while but they'll try and re-stock them! (still waiting to see them though.. must follow that letter up actually...)
I've written to practically all the major supermarkets at some point asking for certain vegan products, but from now on if i want vegan foods in a supermarket i'm writing to the store manager! They're more likely to act if they think they've upset a real person who spends money in their own shop.

I wrote to the store manager of the Harrogate Sainsburys a while back and got a letter back from him asking if i wanted to do a shop around the store with him to tell him my views! I was too much of a pussy at that point to take up the offer though. BOOOO ME! He said i'd get a discount on my shopping too.
Next time though, next time
Today I found a bag of Waitrose own brand plain chocolate covered mint fondants which appear to be vegan.
They had a lot of chilled convenience food like fishfingers, thai bites and tofu sausages. Nice to be in a supermarket where at least half of the veggie stuff wasn't quorn based.
