There are plenty of other sources from which to draw energy. And sugar is not healthy anyway. Look up some information about it, there is plenty.
I try to avoid both refined and unrefined sugar
I avoid refined sugar (close to) 100%
I avoid cane/beet/palm sugar
I normally avoid refined sugar
I use refined sugar occasionally
I haven't really paid much attention to refined sugar yet / I use it
I use sugar that is refined without using animal products
I use the kind of sugar that is naturally brown, like Demarara and Turbinado (but not refined sugar that has been made brown)
I use other natural sweeteners, like stevia, maple syrup etc.
I use artifical/synthetic sweeteners
I use fair trade sugar

^ You don't need sugar, of course not. It's not going to kill you if you have a few sweets though.
I actually consider sugar to be healthy in some circumstances, I'm diabetic and even though its well controlled, several times a week my blood sugar drops* and I HAVE to have sugar to rebalance it or I will pass out, on those days I consider it to be extremely healthy as its the only thing stopping me from ending up in hospital (or worse). So I think it depends on your definition of healthy, for me the side effects of having sugar can far outway the consequences of not.
*This is caused by a variety of reason such as being active (I walk about a mile to work and a mile back, swim up to 10K a week), needing to adjust meds, exercise recovery (upto 24 hours after), stress/upset, ambient temperature (insulin works more quickly in hot temperatures), alcohol, and it can happen for no reason whatsoever (I.E it happens in the middle of the night sometimes for no reason).
