    Smile Famous vegans

How many vegan celebs are there? The ones I know of are:
    - Alicia Silverstone
    - Daniel Johns (Silverchair)
I think Drew Barrymore was, but now she is an omnivore.
    Who else is out there?
I think it is important because they are role models for people and set an example for society. If more celebrities were vegan then maybe more people would follow...

    Also in Australia:
    Peter Brock (Racing driver)
    Greg Chappell (Cricketer)

Yes, it's sad about Drew Barrymore. As I said in an earlier post about Raw Food/ Demi Moore,Drew said she changed back to being a meat-eater because she wanted to "lose weight".

Here's a good list of vegans/vegetarians who are "famous".

    Benjamin Zephaniah
    Hurray! He's great isn't he?

Have you got kd lang? There are various lists around e.g. http://www.ivu.org/hkvegan/gb/famous.html but they tend to go out of date fairly quickly as not all celebs are as committed as, say, Benjamin Zephaniah.

Yes I so admire Benjamin Zephaniah; he came to Australia recently and although I didn't see him as he didn't come up to Queensland, he was interviewed on the tv around Xmas time. He declaimed very movingly his poem about turkeys, saying in effect, they'd like to celebrate Christmas too! I love him.

Orlando Bloom, Russel Simmons, are for sure vegans, Toby McGuire is veg or vegan, he is thre one who plays spider man.

All together, there are pver 100/200 veggies/vegans of celebrities out there. Though vegan means they are more commited, unless they are actually veggie but call themselves vegan. As for being vegan you need the compassion and ethics, cannot just have them be a phase. http://www.happycow.net also has a list of famous vegetarians and vegans.

I forget the actor's name, but my g/f watches the soap opera "All My Children" and apparently the guy who plays the character "Phil" is vegan. A tall fella with a chiseled face and as my g/f says, has the same feathered hair from the 80's. Heh.

yes iPod batteries are replaceable. but you have to have some kind of special tool to open them up. so in order to replace the battery you'll usually need to go to an Apple Store or call around to different computer/electronics places and ask them if they can change the battery for you. i have a feeling that was apples way of making people spend a little bit more on their beloved iPods.

i think iPods rock. i am a Mac person (although I really don't hate PC's since i'm familiar with them too), but i don't think that has any bearing. they're kind of expensive, but as someone said a newer cheaper smaller one with more storage space (i think 20 gigs) is now available. so i'd highly recomend it. the iPod mini's are cool, but they're batteries don't last as long and i think the most space they have on their hard drives are may 5 gigs.

Hmm...actually it might be from Guiding Light. She watches both of them all the time, and I never get the characters straight as I don't pay attention to it. I could just ask her I suppose...

I'm so jealous!! I don't know any vegans besides you guys And I guess I'm just "almost vegan", cuz I ate some Jelly Bellies. I knew that they didn't have gelatin, but forgot that they had some bees wax.

Oh, and now that I've figured out how much junk food is actually vegan, I can see how one could get overweight on a vegan diet, but come on....let's be realistic...eating meat to lose weight? I think that's weird.

When people restrict or eliminate carbohydrates, their body is forced into a toxic state called "ketosis" where the body burns its own issues (including lean muscle tissue like the heart) to create energy. The resulting weight loss is a combination of water, fluids and lean muscle tissue in addition to some adipose tissue.

Yeah...exactly. I just think it's dumb. You can lose weight just as well by eating vegetables, fruits and whole grains and getting enough exercise, so why do people think they need to cut out carbs. They'll never keep the weight off unless they eat like that forever and that's a really terrible thought. People must be eating more animals now than they ever have with the Atkins craze...which is just that...crazy.

animalsvoice, I do believe that Pam Anderson is vegan- in an interview, she was cooking with her chef, and said "SO vegan!" about the food they were eating.
    Some other vegans:
    Natalie Portman
    Julia Stiles
    Fiona Apple
    Brandy
    Chrissie Hynde
    Woody Harrelson
Doris Day- I believe she's vegan, if not, then just vegetarian

I've never met a vegan that buys wool an silk and all that. I know there are some folks that call themselves vegan do all that, but they are not vegan.

I know joaquin phoenix and natalie portman are vegans because they've been very open about fur and silk and such. I think a lot of celebs that say they're vegan really are, but just don't publicize it that much for fear of frightening the common people.

James McCartney was mentioned earlier, he lives in my local area i think, and he was mentioned in my local paper:

"An unnamed Brightonian had a long and booze-fuelled debate about vegetarianism in the 24-hour Buddy's cafe with a young man who was shunning the staple 4am breakfast of meat and lard for something more healthy. After engaging in an argument about the benefits of a carnivorous versus veggie lifestyle, the meat eater stumbled out into the dawn feeling victorious. It was only after they had left that somebody pointed out she had been berating Paul McCartney's son James - the offspring of one of Britain's most famous veggies, Linda McCartney".

Moby is definitely vegan, he has a vegan cafe in the lower East Side of Manhattan called Teany. I've been there-big disappointment foodwise and it's full of not my type of people (artsy-fartsy pretentious NYers). Alicia Silverstone give loads of money to farm sanctuary (www.farmsanctuary.org) and Tribe of Heart (www.tribeofheart.org), both great pro-vegan groups. Mary Tyler Moore might be vegetarian/vegan, she was the host of Farm Sanctuary's annual gala this year in NYC.

Joaquin Phoenix is definitely vegan I loooove him. (Note the avatar.) I didn't know he was a vegan the first time I saw Signs, but I just watched it recently and when Mel Gibson's asking everyone what they'd like for dinner, Joaquin goes, "Chicken teriyaki." I know it was just acting, and he didn't eat any during the dinner scene, but I still found that odd.

It's said he and his family went vegan when he was three, after they'd spent some time on a fishing boat and seen the way the captured fishies were treated. I think River was one before he died, and I'm almost positive his sister Summer is one. Joaquin refused to wear leather shoes in some designer ad, and the behind-the-scenes stuff on the Quills dvd includes the costume designer discussing how she'd made his character's clogs out of pleather because he's a vegan.
