    Lightbulb Re: Non-vegan tofutti stuff

Yes, it's true. Read the ingredients!

    http://www.tofutti.com/faq.asp#99

Also, watch out for hydrogenated oils, as some are used in Tofutti products.

Thanks from em, tto, Artichoke. That's Tofutti finished for me, particualry in view of what comes further down the FAQ:

"Does Tofutti use sugar that has been refined with animal bone char?
Most of our frozen dessert products use cane sugar. We assume that the sugar is refined with animal bone char since this is a fairly common procedure in the sugar refining industry. Please keep in mind that all sugar refining in this country is done by a handful of companies, who establish their own procedures for refining sugar. It is our understanding that if this process is used in bleaching the sugar, the bone char is actually extracted at the end of the procedure and no bone char remains within the finished sugar product. Our products are certified kosher parve, which means no animal parts could remain in the sugar. Also, I would like to bring to your attention that not all of our products use cane sugar. We also use corn syrup sweeteners and NutraSweet. We also have two stick novelties, Totally Fudge Pops and chocolate coated Marry Me Bars, which are sweetened with organic sugar."

    Cheers

    Default Tofutti Cream Cheese

    Is the best thing ever.

I bought it on Tuesday and now it's half gone. *licks lips*

I bought it a few times but it's so darn expensive, I always only used a little bit. But this time my daddy bought it for me and I'm eating it like crazy.

    So yummy with pretzels.

    Paste it on your sammich

    or on your bagel

mix it in your pasta sauce to make it creamy

flavour it up and dip your crackers in it

put it on yer taters or your steamed veggies

have it on toast with yer favourite other toppings

I've given people Toffutti before and they've not even realised it's not "proper" cream cheese.

You can use the original flavour like mascarpone in cold dessert recipes.

Need to find some way to keep the cheese firm in the heat

    I'm drooling

Years ago I used to go to a greek deli and they sold big slabs of it. Whenever I came in they would get it out. It was very nice. I don't think I'll make any though as it need sugar and I'm not having any.

There almost the same. Tofutti is a little bit sweeter. I've got some of both in the fridge.

The pasta thing sounds devine. A little bit of cream cheese, little bit of sour cream....sounds almost like alfredo.

Toffutti's Sour Supreme is yum-num too. It tastes like the full-fat, homemade yogurt my mom makes more than sour cream, without the soy taste. So yummy. Delicious with cucumbers and mint.

If you can get vegan wonton or "eggroll" wrappers, make cream cheese filled sweet or savory snacks!

If you can get puff pastry or phyllo dough, make sweet or savory baked treats!

Make brownines and mix in softened cream cheese!

(Oh, I am SUCH a foodie! I could just make delicious treats all day!)

I agree that avoiding animal products is MUCH more important than avoiding hydrogenated oils or high fructose corn syrup, but I'd rather be able to do both. I have found some ice cream sandwiches and fake sour cream (made from rice) that allows me to, but I haven't researched fake cream cheese. I'm not a crazy health nut or anything because I still eat my vegan chocolate and the like

Hey, vegan chocolate has been proven to be the healthiest form and eating that still qualifies you as a "health nut" if you like the title

Personally, I never eat hydrogenated oils or allow my family to do so.

Well, I try not to eat hydrogenated oils but I do admit that some stuff I buy has it as I can't find alternatives w/o animal products in place of the hydrogenated oil. But I agree that chocolate has some health benefits...of course I want to believe that

At my grocery store, there is now a new tofutti cream cheese. NO TRANS FATS!! It comes in a yellow container. I was so happy to see it!

I love the non-hydrogenated one!! It's been around for a while now, but it's really hard to find. I've only ever seen it in a health food store in Hawaii, and at another one in Ottawa. But other than that, it seems to be pretty rare.

Yep, but it seems a bit softer than the regular one. I'm afraid to try it in a cheesecake recipe in case it comes out too soft. But the flavour is excellent, and I like it softer for easier bagel spreading

I found this recipe at: http://bakingsheet.blogspot.com/2005/09/imbb-19-i-cant-believe-its-vegan.html
Gonna have a try at making it hopefully this easter weekend - looks yummy! If you try it first, let me know how it goes...

    (Vegan) Lemon Cheesecake

1-14 oz package firm silken tofu
1-8 oz package Better than Cream Cheese
    2/3 cup sugar
    ¼ cup lemon juice
    ½ tsp almond extract
    2 tbsp cornstarch
    1-9 inch pie crust

    Preheat oven to 350F.
Place silken tofu and vegan cream cheese in the food processor. Process for 1 minute, then add sugar. Process until smooth and no sugar granules remain, 3-5 minutes.
In a small bowl, combine lemon juice and almond extract. Whisk in cornstarch. Pour mixture into the food processor and process until very smooth. Pour into prepared crust and bake for 45 minutes.
Allow to cool at room temperature for 2 hours, then refrigerate overnight.
    Serves 10

I guess you could experiment with different flavours, e.g. melted chocolate or strawberries instead of the lemon... If making your own pie crust, someone recommended to me mixing together oats, ginger, walnuts, maple syrup and a little melted vegan margarine.
