Thumbs up School Catering Contract for Vegan Organisation (UK)

During the week of celebrating their 21st anniversary, Nottingham-based Veggies Catering Campaign have been invited to take on a year-long catering contract, to provide wholesome meals for a local primary school.

The school has 300+ 5-11year olds, but only 56-60 currently take school dinners, as the food on offer is unappealing.

The school Head has approached Veggies in her determination to turn around the failing service and to provide nutritious food. She has already commited not to renew the existing contract in May 2006, and is enthusiastically discussing ways in which Veggies could provide a popular alternative.

The school is desparately keen to provide wholesome meals and will go the extra mile to work with Veggies, who would integrate the meals into the school curriculum. For example food from Egypt will be provided whilst this is the topic covered in the classroom. Veggies can highlight the suitability of the meals for all dietary and cultural preferences, including lactose intolerence, as no animal products would be used. There would be no saturated fats and a minimised risk of salmonella, listeria and food poisoning. The avoidance of meat and dairy products (and turkey twizzlers) also addresses food production issues including excessive land, oil and water use, growth hormones, chemical additives, BSE and avian flue!

There are now statutory nutritional requirements for school meals, which unfortunately do dictate that fish and red meat be provided each week, but ways are being discussed in which Veggies need not be responsible for this, and indeed will be able to provide exciting menu alternatives, demonstrating direct nutritional equivalence.

Many exciting community / catering / campaign options may be possible, such as:

Hands on cooking experience for the pupils - Veggies have already been asked to participate in home economics classes for the remaining 6 weeks of the term.

Sourcing locally-grown or informally-organic fruit & veg, possibly even using produce from pupils own gardens and allotments!

Involvement of the school community in food issues, actually designing their own children's lunch menus.

The overall aim is that the school students experience wholesome, healthy, ie non-animal foods, from age-5, before social and advertising pressures lock them into a life of junk food.

An example to be set for educational caterers everywhere!

The character of Veggies Catering Campaign, as a volunteer-led community-based project, would encourage maximum input from all interested parties, perhaps setting-up a community enterprise so that the school itself 'owns' the project. If (when) the idea spreads, Veggies could assist other schools with similar projects, providing advice on recipes and nutrition, joint purchase of ingredients, stand-in staff for holiday & sick leave, class-room presentations etc.

Veggies are now seeking everyone and anyone interested in helping with this groundbreaking project.

Help is invited with the following:

    - Designing menus and recipies

    - Sourcing local ingredients (or wholesale supplies)

    - Providing nutritional analysis of the meals and guidance to parents with concerns over the suitability of pure vegetarian diets

    - Publicity to seek out best practice of similar projects elsewhere.

    - Hands-on help with classroom sessions.

    - IT support, recipe website, discussion forum etc

Through the 'vast and extensive' network of which Veggies is a part we feel confident that this exciting project can come to fruition.

Contact is especially welcome via the discussion facility on the Veggies website.

Their 40th Anniversary might see Veggies Catering throughout the nation!
