    Default weird sleep experiences

Last night I suddenly was startled and woke up confused, and I heard my roomate say "What's wrong?" and I was still hazy/sleepish and said "huh?", and she said "You were just screaming!"

Have any of you ever screamed in your sleep?? Or any other weird sleep experiences?

I don't know whether I've ever screamed, but I certainly talk a lot while asleep.
I'm generally very restless and roll around a lot. As a child I constantly had bruises because I kept falling out of the bed. Now I only seem to fight - sometimes I find my pillow on the other side of the room in the morning - no idea how it got there...

I've been told that besides talking in my sleep, I am prone to prolonged bouts of hysterical laughter. I've heard it sounds both insane and scary, and sometimes lasts upwards of an hour at the time.

Not scream but I snore and I have a restless leg. I'm always moving about.

When I was younger and would sleep with teddy bears, they would always be tossed around the room by the time I woke up.

A bit after i did some harder drugs, i was at a freinds house and i was sleeping in his room. I was having this weird dream that i was running through the forest with some tribe, and we were all supposed to gather together for some ritual. All of a sudden (and this is the first time its ever happened) I shoot STRAIGHT up in bed and start looking around the room, thinking im in the forest and since its night i cant see anyone. After a few seconds i realise whats happening, and by this time my freinds awake and freaked out. I just kinda laughed it off and fell back asleep. It was totally weird!

    OOH OOH!!! ME!

I sleep walk, talk in my sleep (a lot!) and call random people and talk to them on the phone. This is a fairly recent development. I once woke up outside my front door without a top on...which was scary big time! and my now Ex boyfriend said i have stripped naked and wondered around the apt. while mumbling about going to the store.

It's scary and funny at the same time.

I've been told I swear in my sleep. I don't do it a lot in RL, so I find that humorous.

This one time in college, I woke up groggy in the morning and rolled over to shut off my alarm with one arm, and that hand felt what I thought was another dude in my bed and I yelled "get the hell away from me!!!" then I realized it was MY other arm that had fallen asleep, gone numb and had no feeling.

I remember when I was a kid, about 9, I kept having a recurring dream about chasing someone through a maze. I don't know who it was or why I needed to catch them, I just knew that if I didn't I would die. It was awful because they were faster than me and got away and I'd wake up screaming and crying. Sometimes it would take a while to realise it was just a dream.

I too have had drug induced dreams, and by "hard drugs" I don't think Plunder Bunnie meant coke, or heroin as those don't exactly open up the mind to the subconcious dream states. But from personal experience I know that mushrooms, salvia, silene capensis, and chocolate have increased my dreaming awareness.

Recently I've been experimenting with altering my dream patterns with Kava Kava, and have been able to use it to achieve lucidity which was pretty nice. Kava has been labeled a hallucinogen by some, and I can see why. In the waking world, it is not, but when you start to fall asleep I have had multiple accounts of auditory hallucinations - GENERALLY SOME SCAREY SHIT!

To answer the original question of screaming while asleep, yes several times and I've been highly aware of it while it was going on. The thing that freaks me out the most is when something crosses over from the dream world into the physical waking world, ussually out of body. The last time it happened though I physically woke up and still saw my dream. The dream setting was exactly the same as where I was in bed, so the setting did not change, but I woke up to see the figure of a man standing at the door. Obviously this freaked me out very much and I started screaming. The only way I know to describe the state I was in is that I was literally half way in both worlds, and I felt incapable of becoming fully awake, so after some struggle I calmed down and let the dream take place. All in all, it proved to be a pretty signifigant dream.

I used to have "night terrors" when I was little, which are worse than nightmares: they usually happen in nonREM sleep and the night terror sufferer will seem awake to the "outside world," but is not truly conscious of what's going on in that "real" world, so the person usually is in a wet sweat, may sit up, scream, etc. and yet not respond to what people in the "real" world say or do. Thankfully I got through that stage, but now I think my cat has them! She will occasionally wake up, jump up and/or run a short distance, seeming disoriented and scared. I'm glad I don't let her sleep in my bed (as I'm VERY allergic to cats), as one day on the couch, she had such a night terror and grabbed hold of me (she bit down and scratched--causing puncture wounds on my pinky and deep scraches on my inner upper arm). Unfortunately, cats seem to have more sleep disorders (especially not having enough of the neurotransmitter that keeps you "paralyzed" during REM sleep) than other pets, though vets know little about what to do for it.

And I know that "murdered brain cells" can cause sleep issues too, as once my VERY drunk brother came into my room (I was probably 14ish), spouting some gibberish (like "corky, corky"), and I heard a strange noise. When he left the room, I got up and turned my lights on and he had peed on the end of my bed!!! (I'm just glad that the bed was located where it was or he might've gotten me!) I went in and told my parents--it was still pitch dark outside--and my mom's first response was, "are you sure you didn't do it?" After she helped me change the bed sheets, dad went to my brother's room and saw his state, which he got a big lecture about the next morning. [Most drugs kill brain cells and, yes, alcohol has killed a few of mine when I was younger--all I can do is hope I don't need them sometime]

The only other strange dream experience was really more an OBE. When I was a teen, one time I felt like I was one with the universe, no sense of the dichotomy or separateness of the world. When I "came to," I was sitting up in bed and a bit annoyed it was over!

When I was a kid in the 60's before we had duvets I used to rip bedsheets in half in my sleep. No one knows how and I don't remember doing it. I'd wake up and the sheet would be in two halves held together by the hem bit Luckily I grew out of it!
Later on when I was with my ex husband I used to sleep walk all the time and was found trying to climb out of upstairs windows with no clothes on. The problem stopped as soon as I left him
I have always been a big snorer, it used to drive my current husband nuts but the snoring stopped as soon as I became vegan and gave up dairy!
I'm quite sociable in bed now. My husband talks in his sleep you can have fantastical conversations with him - it's really funny

Crazy that you only did the sleep walk thing with your ex. I am very glad that it got better!! It's so scary to sleep walk.

People talking about screaming in their sleep reminds me of something that happened a month or two ago - I thought I'd woken up but was still in bed and could see something moving about in my room and that I'd screamed really loudly several times. I then became properly awake and couldn't be sure if I'd dreamt screaming or not. Nobody heard me, so I'm still not sure, but it really got my heart racing!

I know I snore and sleep-talk sometimes, and when I've shared beds with people they've sometimes told me that I've pushed them out of the bed in my sleep

I used to fall asleep in Structural Geology lecture all the time. I was sitting in the middle of the lab bench, holding my pencil one day, when I had a waking dream. There was a butcher knife poised over my hand, and I was staring at it, when "CHOP!!" It woke me up with a start, and my pencil went flying out of my hand down the lab table, and EVERYONE starting laughing at me. Fortunately, it was a small class, and we were all friends, so I wasn't too embarassed.

I didn't get a very good grade from that instructor, but when I took Field Methods with the guy who got the highest grade in the Structural Geology class the semester after I took it, it turned out that I knew lots more structural geology than he did. So there's a plug for nocturnal learning.

The stories from my childhood are bizarre. I can remember waking up on the couch after going to sleep in my bed, dad said he once found me in the garage, and even when I wasn't being a somambulist, I used to wake up with all my blankets and my precious teddy bear (which I do still sleep with and don't care who knows it) on the floor.

I dont have any weird sleeping stories, I just move around a lot in my sleep, and when I wake up in the moring, most of my covers are on the floor. My sister told me I sometimes talk in my sleep, but rarley. My sister on the other hand! She moans A LOT in her sleep, and they arent just short little moans, they are long moans that last like 15 secs, so its like *Moooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnn nnn*. She also talks in her sleep, its fun to ask her questions when she is half alseep. Once she woke up and started walking to the front door and was ready to walk out. Fun stuff.

Catspajams, I have this happen as well - if you can't remember the screaming part - especially if you sat up in bed and later can't remember it - you might have had a sleep terror. Most people who have them outgrow them by age 21, but I'm 30 and still have them. I also used to sleepwalk - and I can carry on conversations in my sleep.

They usually happen if I'm extremely tired and/or stressed and fall asleep quickly. Soon after I fall asleep, I'll jump up out of bed if startled and yell and kind of freak out. My husband was afraid of it at first, but now he's getting used to it.

Don't worry, you aren't alone or abnormal. Although, if it persists for more than a few years into your 20s you may want to visit a sleep specialist like I did. He basically told me not to worry unless I became violent or made an effort to leave the house. And to take care of myself, because physical exhaustion increases them. They aren't harmful themselves, but can be a sign of something else going on, much like regular nightmares.

Melatonin can help you sleep more peacefully too - it seems to work for me.

LOL my boyfriend says i talk a lot in my sleep and while it's mostly complete rubbish he sometimes has conversations with me, and i have no recollection of them when i wake up

sugarmouse i think a lot of people have that spasm thing as they're just falling asleep, i know i do and so does my boyfriend. there are various theories as to why it happens, but i think it's to do with muscles relaxing as you fall asleep. i also sometimes experience something similar to what you describe about being awake mentally but not being able to move. it's probably nothing to worry about too much

when im really exhasted i walk and talk in my sleep.

i can remember after a particularly exhausting trip to paris...(12 hour plane ride, screaming children...etc..) passing out in the hotel room. the next thing i remember is being in the lobby, and the doorman giving instructions on how to get to the nearest waterpark.

apparently i got upset when he didnt speak english...

I had a wierd dream last night, must have been as I'm a new vegan, but anyway I dreamt I was really hungry and wanted a sandwich and I couldn't find a vegan sandwich anywhere I lived so I travelled all the way to Basingstoke which is about 35 miles from me and went to a D.I.Y shop to get a vegan sandwich!!! Think the DIY shop bit of the dream came from buying a new shed for our new rescue rabbits we are getting this week and I woke up really hungry. My stomach was grumbling. Wierd!!!

I sleep walk and sleep talk nightly, but I've been known to change my clothes, pour drinks, and lecture in my sleep as well.

I'm an English teacher and my partner has caught me on various occasions doing strange things like lecturing on Beowulf or lamenting these kids today "with their big pants, colored chalk, and lack of appreciation for fine literature." (Any MST3K fans in here?)

I used to get night terrors. I'd walk into my mum's room and start screaming. Actually that's pretty funny haha but, yeah never remembered any of it. I talk in my sleep and get those spasms too! They wake me right up. Apparently sometimes I sleep with my eyes open. Spooky stuff. Alot of the time, I'll just get to sleep but still be pretty awake and I'll hear myself lightly snoring and get scared and wake up. It's weird.

I used to sleep walk heaps, I'd lose myself in my room, although it's tiny! I wouldn't be able to find the lightswitch and I'd get so confused and start crying. Oh and then there's the time I was sleep walking, I went to the front door and was trying to unlock it when my brother came and asked me what I was doing, I started yelling saying that I had to collect my dad from the barbeque. Very...odd. But I find it funny :P

I heard that the leg spasm is part of the body's natural defense mechanism. Sometimes when you fall asleep, your heart rate drops so fast that your body thinks you're dying, so your brain makes your leg jerk to keep you conscious.

I had a weird sleep experience when I lived in Thailand. I shared a bed with 2 other girls, and one morning one of them told me that I had woken up in the middle of the night and started petting her head like she was a dog, and murmuring in a language that wasn't English or Thai. I had no recollection of it, but I was used to sleeping with my dog before I had moved to Thailand, so maybe I had a dream about him and thought my roommate was my dog! That wouldn't explain the gibberish I was talking though!

Vaderesque, you're SO right about murdered brain cells causing weird sleep too. Once when I was 13 or 14, my step-father was so drunk that he crawled into my bed naked . He left as soon as I started yelling at him, and he had no recollection of it the following morning.

sugarmouse, I've had that happen to me before also!...I've been told when that happens it has to do with an outer body experience. When it happened to me I was terrified...like you said you're just paralized and I tried so hard to move but couldn't do anything, not even scream...and I also heard a very loud ringing..it was deafening. Finally, I was so tired from trying to move I didn't care what happened anymore and fell back asleep. Pretty freaky...

If I take Valerian it can make them more intense. Does anyone have any interesting things to tell about this subject.

That was probably a hypnagogic hallucination. When you're half-asleep/half-awake, you might think you hear your name or feel like you're falling...it's pretty common actually

I don't know if it helps with lucid dreaming, but the B vitamins (if taken shortly before sleep) help with dream recall and make them more vivid.

Talk about interdimensional dream world type of stuff. I have dreams about 30 times a month, if not more. Last year a girl I was dating said I was talking in my sleep saying, "but it's organic". I did feel kind of embarassed but it's better than those episodes I have when I'm sleepwalking to the kitchen to eat a vegan bar, nuts, tangerines, ect. I have to keep the food away at night.

When I awaken from some dreams I really feel like I've tralled back from somewhere, sort of like jet~lag, but I call it dream~lag. I do look at it as fun, kind of like an adventure into another world and back, and I know that it is. I travel without moving and I know that I talk alot in my sleep. I've been to dream interpretation classes and even spoke with some dream analasys people who have taught me alot about how to make my own dream dictionary. I have a journal from 2004 with about 20 or 30 dreams in it, and I still remember some of them by heart.

Yes, the lucid factor hits me alot, and I can actually re~dream stuff. It happens so much I keep about 4 or 5 dream interpretation books by my head, but I know I must compile a personal dream dictionary someday. I have to look for that journal I wrote. I experience lucid dreaming and it is so fun, because then I start to move and sweat while realizing the dream has a time limit, it's so amazing, I love dreams.

I was at a friends the other night and I starting laughing in my sleep. That must have been spooky.

i've done that before, except i was alone. and the best part about it was that i was laughing so hard at my own joke that i woke myself up. i couldn't stop laughing after i woke up either. i would have seemed like a complete lunatic if there had been anyone else around to witness it.

Koolvedge - lucid dreaming is the best. I do it quite a lot. Ive kept dream journals for years, it definitely helps with recall. Ive joined a lucid dreaming forum, thats really interesting, although a lot of them are stoners.

I only really experience dreams if I go to sleep straight, any smoking whatsoever and I just wake up in the morning, so I don't do it. Drinkings probably the same thing but I haven't done it in a while. I thinking smoking does something that actually inhibits the memory of my dreams. Last night I had a few interesting ones, a little intense, but good.
