What can I do with fresh cranberries? Do they taste good raw? Or are they too tart?

I think they are definitely too tart raw! You can add them to baked goods, oatmeal (but it won't be the same as dried cranberries) or a fruit smoothie. Since they are so tart, you may need to add some sweetener.

Thanks.
I might buy a bag anyway and throw them into salads.

I suggest muffins. Just don't let them sing, they sound all winey and depressing.

It's easy to make cranberry sauce. It just takes sugar, water, and cranberries. I think you use a cup of sugar, a cup of water, and a pound of cranberries, but I'm not sure. You heat the water and stir in the sugar. When it simmers, add the cranberries. Then you simmer the whole thing until most of the berries pop; keep stirring. I think it takes about 10 minutes for the whole process. Refrigerate, and you have yummy cranberry sauce.
I've also read a variation that uses some orange juice to make an orange-cranberry sauce, but I don't know the details.

They are very tart. I usually mix some in with sweeter berries in my smoothies. I have made cranberry nut muffins with them, but they were extremely tart as opposed to the dried ones that are sweetened.
Thanks, but I have no need for cranberry sauce. Sorry. It's easy to make cranberry sauce. It just takes sugar, water, and cranberries. Hmmm, maybe I'll ditch the idea of buying cranberries.

But, you can use cranberry sauce in oatmeal or on toast for a nice breakfast or snack.

Ohh, that's a good idea. Does it last long in the fridge?

Cranberrry sauce should last at least a week. I think the acidity of the cranberries slows the growth of bacteria and mold.

"you dont have to be tall to see the moon" - african proverb
well i obviously wouldn't be asking if i knew or could read the can..
isnt there a label on it? thats wierd that it doesnt have the ingredients on it. every cranberry sauce ive seen i can eat.
"you dont have to be tall to see the moon" - african proverb
i've seen cranberry sauce in the UK with cochineal in, most likely to replace some of the colour lost in intensive processing

I dont 'have' the ingredients. I do not have the can. Nevermind, I guess this question is too hard
Caitlin, I don't believe your question is too hard but it may be a bit too broad. I think that depending on the country and/or company of production, jelled cranberry sauce may have different additives. Therefore, we would need to know which brand label is in question in order to answer the question.

The cranberry I've seen have been vegan. But, Caitlin, why not go to the store and look for yourself?
Peace, love, and happiness.
Oh, now I know what you mean! My mom used to open a can and it would retain the shape of the can! I bet it has gelatin in it but I'll take a look today as I'll be at a regular grocery store.Caitlin

I don't know if canned cranberry sauce does have gelatin in it or not, BUT cranberries have enough pectin in them naturally that you don't need to add gelatin to make cranberry sauce. It's so fast to make cranberry sauce, that I don't really think about buying the canned stuff anymore. And, you can sweeten and season to your liking that way too.

Okay, I have the answer!!!!
OceanSpray Jellied Cranberry Sauce is vegan! Just as Litsea stated, the pectin gives the sauce the consistency of gelatin (just like when you make jam or fruit jellies.)
By the way, Litsea, your signature is a little spooky. Especially since I can imagine the look on your face as you do that.

does this mean you're going to tell us all how to make LSD and blow things up?Litsea

I actually *have* made my own pyrotechnics before! People really get excited on camping trips when you throw something in the fire that produces a blinding light. As far as the LSD goes, I'll leave that in the hands of the chemists who--while they may be paid well--have the worst retirement packages from their shady bosses.

Well, then. How about making this:
Cranberry Orange Relish
3 1/2 cups fresh cranberries
1 medium sweet orange
1 medium apple, cored and cut into wedges
1 cup vegan sugar
18-ounce can crushed pineapple
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Pulse together the cranberries, orange and apple in a food processor until chunky. Do not overmix. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the sugar, crushed pineapple, ginger and nutmeg. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
