Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Chu Chai, Rue St Denis, Montreal. Ah. Thai vegetarian restaurant. Heavenly.
I went to Canada for 3 weeks a few years ago. My last holiday actually but it was so good it's worth not going anywhere else for ages.
We went to Vancouver, which was great, then Banff by minibus, then to Toronto, then went to Montreal via Niagara Falls, then Quebec, and back to Montreal. It was ALL fabulous. Canada is so much more vegan friendly than the UK.
I'd like to visit again one day - so much more to see!
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
do you really think canada is more vegan friendly than the UK? I always see vegan festivals and such going on in the UK and I get so jealous!
I've never been to a vegan restaurant... that one sounds great!
I have lots of family in Montreal, so I might get to go eat some yummy Thai food one day!!
I used to live on vancouver island. Although, I don't remember it much, I was young. I'd like to visit again.
I would love to go way up north in canada and watch the northern lights!
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Yes, I thought Canada was definitely more vegan friendly. It's so multicultural, and there are a lot more purely vegetarian places. In Toronto there seem to be loads of Chinese Vegetarian restaurants. Canadians seemed more environmentally aware too.
We stopped at a Youth Hostel on the way to Banff, and it was literally in the middle of nowhere. (Very pleasant!) I was panicking about telling the owner I was vegan and thought I'd be going hungry, but she said "Fine, no problem, the veggie burgers are vegan, I have soya milk and hang on, I'll just check the bread has no milk in it" AND she made me some gorgeous fruit pancakes with soya milk in the morning. Vegan heaven. Except that we had to sleep in an old train caboose and it was FREEZING, but food wise it was heavenly.
In the UK I've often had to explain to people what a vegan is and what I can and can't eat, usually accompanied by very peculiar looks, grumbled comments ("whatever next..., in my day.....") and a lettuce sandwich!
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Cherry - Have you ever seen the northern lights?
I have a few times... they're pretty amazing.
We had a spectacular show this past may. It was incredible. I can't even explain how beautiful it was. Apparently there was something going on with the sun. Some solar flares I believe. So it made the sky a huge light show for hours. I've never seen anything like it. It actually brought tears to my eyes...
I would like to go further north though, to see a real show!
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Hi Terra! I see you live in the Georgian Bay area. I was born in Owen Sound and grew up in Port Elgin!
I've hardly travelled around my country at all. Other than the fact that I now live on Vancouver Island. I've been to Quebec and Calgary, and all over Southern Ontario, but that's all! So if I could go anywhere, I'd definitely check out the Maritimes. For some reason I really want to see PEI, though it's probably because of my fond memories of Anne of Green Gables LOL. And I'd love to see more of Quebec. It's so different from the rest of Canada.

Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Well I have lived in Vancouver for 3 and a half years. During that time, I have seen parts of B.C. including Victoria and Port Renfrew (on the beautiful western side of Vancouver Island).
I've also been to Kelowna lots of times, so I've seen the surrounding area there and I love driving home the long way on the Hope-Princeton Road.
I've been to Banff, Alberta. We drove by car from Vancouver to there and back again. It was beautiful!
Next year we are going to PEI for 2 weeks in August. We have rented a fully self-contained apartment there woohoo! Even if there's not lots to do there for 2 weeks, I am going to have such a good time, just chillin out and relaxing in the Maritimes

Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Hey Yoggy -
You've been to quite a few places I would say!
I'm pretty much the same; born in ontario, moved to Vancouver island. then we moved back to ontario 2 years later. I have family in quebec and a few areas around BC. So i've been there a few times and I've travelled from ontario to BC through Canada once and back from BC to Ontario through the states....
Canada can be a bit boring when you're 7 and travelling non-stop in a crowded car for 4 days! But it's worth it when you get to the mountains in alberta and BC... wow... Ontario seems so plain once you've been out there!
But I do like the georgian bay area in the summer... only if you're near the water though!
Anne of Green Gables... that's the best! I would love to see the maritimes too!
My sister has been to Nova Scotia and says it's awesome!
I think each province has it's own unique beauty. They're all so different!
I didn't realise that Port Elgin was right on the water... That's the one thing I love, being on the water! You must have done a lot of exploring around the Bruce Peninsula as a kid. What a beautiful place!
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Well, we got free flights because we had tons of points with the Aeroplan program. Otherwise - we wouldn't be able to afford it. Flights to PEI from Vancouver are VERY expensive.
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Roxy -
I was wondering when you were going to join this thread!
And here you are!
My favorite Aunt & Uncle & cousins live in Kelowna! They LOVE it there!
They've been to a few vegan restaurants and say that there is plently of vegan food in the stores! (their way of trying to get me to move out there! which I love!)
You're very lucky to be able to go to PEI - what an adventure!
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Kelowna is lovely! We have a house up there, in the Mission area, that my mother-in-law rents from us. We almost lost it in the fires a couple of years ago, but thank goodness it was saved.
Do you think you could please find out the names of those Vegan restaurants? I never knew there were vegan restaurants there. I won't be going up there again until next year, but it's always good to know!!
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Forsure - I'll email her right away and ask!
It usually takes her about one week to get back to me!
I guess that's what happens when you have two small kids!
They almost lost their home to the fire aswell.
It was extremely lucky that they didn't. Almost every other house was burnt to the ground...
I'm not familiar with the Mission area, where is that exactly?
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
It is basically south Kelowna. Probably right near where your Aunt and Uncle are, as it was where the big fires were a couple of years ago. Our place is just off Lakeshore Road.
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Hello everyone
No Terra, I haven't ever seen the Northern Lights. They sound amazing. Apparently you can see them from Northern Scotland but I don't think they are as strong as from further North. They're definitely something I'm aiming to see at some point in my life.
All this talk of Canada is making me want to visit again.
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
mophoto - Hamilton is beautiful if you like the city life!
But the air quality there is VERY poor. They have a ton of factories.
Do you go to toronto often?
Adam - now I want a sandwich. We have tons of bread here in our supermarkets, so you are more than welcome to come here to get some. It would be a long trip though, just for bread....
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
All this talk about the Northern lights and noone mentioned Dawson City, Yukon. But don't go around June 21st, or you'll have to wait a few weeks for the sky to get dark enough to even see the Northern lights. Mid August is the time to go. And while you're there, take the drive up the Dempster Highway and with a short flight over the pingos you can end up in Tuktoyaktuk.
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
I would go to the maritimes to drink the cold drinkw ith the maritimers, I would go to old montreal to search for the excentric jewish communities, I would go to BC (southern the island or whatever) to trip with the hippies. And I would go to ottawa to dance one parliment hill wiht a sign that said "The universe loves public healthcare".

Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Right where I am. Toronto
I have been out of this lovely city for far too long now, and I am sooo happy to be back. Hello TTC! And all the vegan restaurants and shops! You can't get Matt and Nat vegan wear many places.
Not to be a Toronto snob or anything, however I have a theory. You can tell how far you are away from Toronto by the soy stock at your local coffee pub.
i.e. When asking whether a coffee shop has soy "milk", this is the response in relation to how far you are away from Toronto.
Reeeeely far away: (a confused stare) "No! What is soy?"
Far away: (a blank stare) "...um, soy? No, we dont carry that here dear"
Mid-way: "Sure" (location of soy milk behind counter, and has been expired days ago cuz not a lot of people drink it, and its the one that seperates in the coffee)
Almost there: "Sure, here it is." (decent soy, but not organic)
In Toronto: "Sure, what kind of soy milk do you want? Flavoured? Organic? Brand perference?"
Ahhhhh, see what I mean. I love my coffee too much to have it jeapordized.

Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Sorry, I should clarify. Within Ontario. Small towns, outside of the Greater Toronto Area. Sorry, I am encapsulated in my own little world again.
YAY SOY!

that sucks about hamilton- it seems so cute in passing. toronto is so close to me but i don't go there enough! too many of my friends live in chicago- to hours further.
my dad is an overzelous ski instructor and we want to go skiing somewhere close for the weekend. blue mountain and searchmont are awaiting us- just need more snow.
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
mophoto
any other good places to ski in ontario??
I've only been to 2 ski resorts in Ontario: Blue Mountain and Talisman Resort. Talisman is smaller, but still really fun. And you know, I have absolutely no idea where it is! I went twice when I was pretty young (once when I was 11, once when I was 12), and of course I was driven there and didn't pay attention to where it was LOL. It's somewhere around southern Ontario though

Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
Hey Mophoto & Yoggi -
That's so cool, I live 30 minutes away from blue mountain. I've been there skiing and hiking... My sister and her boyfriend are moving to collingwood(that's the town that blue mountain is...)... I have tons of friends there too...
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
I finally got a hold of my aunt and uncle who live in kelowna - i haven't talked to them in weeks... they came on to chat for a few minutes lastnight and they said kelowna, BC is FILLED with aussies!
Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
i love canada. i grew up nearby and we drove up to toronto and niagara falls quite often. i always had such a great time. i've been to montreal and quebec city a few times. in fact i will be moving to montreal in the spring. i'm excited, but i don't know much about living there, just being a tourist. can anyone tell me about what neighborhoods are nice and whatever else i might need to know to live there?

Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
I probably already said this but Prince Edward Island. In fact, I'm going there in August/September. Will find my way there from my New York trip. Montreal sounds great too but am on a budget.

If you're in Charlottetown, PEI on a Saturday be sure to check out the farmer's market - there's one table that usually has some vegan food. I've had some great vegan soup there! You'll also find delicious things like homemade jams...

Re: If you could go anywhere in Canada, where would it be?
I currently live in Toronto and love how easy it is to be vegan here. I grew up in Halifax, NS and lived in Kingston, ON for 4 years. If I could live anywhere else, either Vancouver or Montreal would work for me, with Montreal being my first choice. I found people in omni restaurants much more knowledgeable and helpful about veganism than they are in omni restos in TO - in my experience, people in Toronto don't know anything or they'll just lie to make you leave them alone. There's basically only one omni resto I've found in Toronto that I feel safe ordering in.
As for visiting though, my hubby and I would really like to spend a bunch of time up north in the Yukon, etc. camping. It'll be a while before we can afford to get up there though.
As for where I've been: NS, New Brunswick, PEI, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, BC. I will never ever live down east again!!

Ooooo I love it there so much! I went there 2 summers ago. It's such a beautiful, beautiful place. Not as vegan friendly as other parts of the country, but an absolutely gorgeous place
