Exclamation Marks and Spencer's vegan list

I looked at their on-line list of which of their products is vegan and they included items containing honey and even meat/flesh

    This needs investigating.

Obviously the chicks were vegan! They separated the vegan ones from those who had (warning: GRAPHIC IMAGE) pecked at the rotting corpses of their companions when packed into the broiler shed

i just read the entire list and was outraged. what exactly do they think a vegan, or a vegetarian for that matter, is?
i made a list of all the products which jumped out at me (im sure there are more but i cant examine all the ingredients right now) and sent them an online complaint. yep, work is quiet today.

If you pm me the list I'll happily make a complaint too, it's kind of funny just how ignorant they are, but also kind of worrying that they're happy to distribute such blatent misinformation.

some of those may be vegan, without checking the list of ingrediants, such as beef onion rings (not sure why a vegan would want to buy any mind!). I've emailed them with a list of things which definately arn't vegan/vegetarian.

perhaps the scandle is that their meat doesn't contain any? Although I find it hard to beleive that M&S sell that many things that don't conatin butter and cream, it never ceases to amaze me just how much dairy m&s can sneak into the most odd things. I used to pity vegetarians who live off cheese and eggs, but any that are used to shopping in M&S would find it very hard to turn vegan.

Default Marks and Spencer's Vegan List

    ... is online at http://www2.marksandspencer.com/feedback/pdfs/Vegan.pdf

However, I notice the following entries:

Ftg [Food to go] Chicken Scilian Lemon and Herb 40g
    Chicken and Veetable [sic] Soup
    Chunky Chicken in gravy

    So what gives?

Ive spoken to staff at Marks and Spencers about this list - at first they found it funny but did apologise and said someone would look at the list as there were obvious mistakes.

Ive also got the vegan wine list which is basically all the vegetarian wines there is a big list of vegan wines - i find this hard to believe, when somewhere like the co-op who label whats veggie and vegan only have about 12 wines for vegans at the small co-op wines by me.

Its great that stores do list whats vegan but they need to get this info correct.

I emailed Sainsburys to ask which wines are vegan this was their reply:

"Thank you for your email. I am very sorry but we are no longer able to supply our customers with a list of products that are suitable for vegans, this is due to a low demand for the guide. I understand how disappointing this must be for you."

Im sticking to the co-op for wine as they sell vegan fair trade wines, and i am always checking labels in the shops!

I have just emailed M&S I will let you know what happens

    "Dear M&S,

I have been a strict vegan for 16 years and I was very shocked and alarmed to read your PDF list of foods suitable for vegans.

    Link http://www2.marksandspencer.com/feedback/pdfs/Vegan.pdf
take a long look at the list and see if you can spot not jus one but several serious errors on your list.

In many cases the foods are far from Vegetarian let alone vegan, these errors include chicken and fish based products, which are neither vegetarian nor vegan.

I really do hope this list is revised very soon and if you are looking for advice or help in completing this list so it is presented correctly and professionally please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Kind regards

They have just updated their list, I got a copy of it in the post this morning.

The online version is available from the same link; http://www2.marksandspencer.com/feedback/pdfs/Vegan.pdf

It looks OK, I had a glance through it and the only thing I saw that looks bad is

'Cheese & Tomato Square pizza 482189'

Still, I suppose it could be Vegan.

Personally I'd rather they made mistakes than not try and produce a list at all, it is afterall only a guide and you should check the ingredients yourself anyway. I think a polite email is on order telling them what they've got wrong.

I suppose the Food to go chicken thing could be textured soya since it is only 40g.

Perhaps yes!!!! .but i wouldnt risk anything from m n s now having read that list!!!!

also....i have noticed tha M an S tend to put none vegam things in a lot of things that could quite easily be vegan...they could so easily be more vegan friendly.....just things in the deli mainly ive noted..some of the sandwiches n salads.

With all due respect to them, this is the second year they've published a vegan list with glaring omissions on it. It doesn't bode well for the accuracy of items which *could* be vegan (ie they have an ingredient which can be derived from both animal and non animal sources and hence you cannot tell from an ingredients list). Lots of us wrote to them last year and they did nothing about it, most of us didn't even get replies. To me it just sends out the message that they don't really care.

I'm pretty appalled by this 'Vegan list, but M&S still have pretty much the clearest labelling of any food store in the UK. There's still quite a few things they sell that are clearly Vegan friendly, you just have to be careful.

I agree and i find that about most food producing companies. I mean, everytime i pick up a packet of crisps they have milk in them!! Why? Maybe it's just me, but i've only been noticing the addittion of milk in the past few years - has it always been there?? I don't see how it enhances the flavour or whatever its meant to do, in the slightest!! Yea, so getting back to the point - too much non vegan things in what are potentially vegan food!!

Thats what i was thinking. There are loads of crisps without milk but what i was meaning about only noticing over the past few years was that i have only been noticing the amount of crisps that are changing there recipies to have milk in them or new brands that are putting it in them rasther than just ommitting milk altogether.

    Kettle chips are too fattening

That's because products that cost four times the price tend to use actual ingredients as opposed to artificial flavourings that cost a fraction of the price. Walker's salt and vinegar contain "salt and vinegar flavour [acidity regulator (sodium diacetate), citric acid, flavour enhancers (monosodium glutamate (from wheat), disodium 5’ribonucleotide)]", Kettle salt and vinegar contain "Sea Salt, Dried Balsamic Vinegar". You get what you pay for.

I'm not a fan of Kettle crisps, they are hard and taste too fatty. But if that's all that's on offer, I'll eat a few.

Hmm..just realised what the title of this thread is...I don't shop there so I'd better go...

what are the vegan flavours? I've only seen tomato & basil that were ok. I didn't fancy trying them. I saw Kettle Chips in big bags were 2 for £2 in Sainsbo's and had very delicious balsamic vinegar, and lightly salted. Also got some root veg crisps from one of the own brands there, but it was about £2 and you got much less. Very nice treat though!
