I hate nestle. Why oh why do they have to make such tempting vegan things (after eights, jellytots) when they are so evil. Oh. I guess I answered my own question.

I admit, my nestle boycott lapses occasionally

Asda (yes, I know, evil Walmart also, but I was forced by circumstances to go there recently) do after dinner mint chocolate thins and have recently started doing orange thins too - 99p for 200g!

They're pretty cheap chocolate tasting but they're good nonetheless, and for that price you can afford to get some to see what you think

Sainsbury's does vegan mint chocolates as well. Can't remember how much they are, but certainly cheaper than Nestlé - and muuuuuch less evil! (no difference though as far as evil calories are concerned... )

I've heard this before, but none of the branches I've been in so far seem to do them - what does the packaging look like? is it similar to After Eights?

Yeah I have been looking for after dinner mints, Tescos do some which I think are vegan but not entirely sure.
The two Sainsburys I go to don't stock them

Co-op After Dinner mints say on the packaging that they are vegan and they are. They are much nicer than After Eights because the chocolate is REALLY thick Only 99p - highly recommended.
Plus you can buy them in Co-op garages, so great for late night chocolate cravings

Unfortunately Sainsbury's doesn't show them on their website, I tried to find them and post a link. I can't remember what the box looks like, haven't bought them for months, but I'll check when I do my weekend shop. They're 99p for 200g, that's all I know. Sory.

Dr Hadwen Trust sell vegan mint thins made by Walkers which are really nice (although the choc's not fairtrade). some pound shops also sell them. Green & Blacks mint choc is just like a massive mint fondant bar - but i don't really buy G&B's much anymore

i saw the Co-op mint thins in their local store today, it's great they say vegan on them. i didn't buy any because i'd already ordered a box of the ones from Dr Hadwen, but i did buy some peppermint creams and chocolate gingers which are also labelled vegan. i did see some fair trade mint thins in Oxfam which might be vegan but they don't say - the sugar might not be vegan but all the other ingredients seem ok. i wouldn't have bought them anyway though as they cost Ł3.49

Seems to be a conspiracy - I checked on the mints in my local Sainsbury's and they don't have them any more! However they are still on their website for online shoppers.

I found the Sainsbury's mints today!!! It's a brighter green packet than After Eights.

They are also doing little vegan party favours - 4 red satiny boxes with silver bead decoration, filled with mint thins (without fondant, just mint flavoured chocolate), for 3.99.

I didn't get any because I couldn't think of a use for them personally, but I think they'd make nice stocking fillers.

    Default After Eights...

    Hi,
This may be in the wrong section, so feel free to move it if so!!
I know that After Eights produced within the UK have always been ok for vegans, yet have recently noticed that packets stocked in Asda, Sainsburys etc now list Butterfat as an ingredient?
Anyone know what the score is with this, are these just from outside the UK or have the UK produced ones now gone the same way???
    Cheers,

Shame about the real After Eights though - used to be something you could take to a dinner party and prove vegans could eat normal things. Turning up with a supermarket own brand doesn't have quite the same panache!

Yeah, not keen on Nestle in general.

You can often buy these Divine fair-traded ones in Oxfam shops.

Some of the people selling them seem to think they're vegan but I haven't written to check.

I don't buy the after eights now anyway, Mr F, cos of nestle. However it was handy when you'd go round to relatives safe in the knowledge they'd have some confectionary you could eat.

I like the tesco or waitrose own brand.

Yes but e.g. Divine do make milk chocolate as well so there could be cross-contamination issues, though they aren't mentioned on the box.

I would probably buy them anyway though because "Fair Trade" trumps "risk of contamination" in my personal rules (usually)

Bastards, they actually have started putting butterfat in, what the hell possessed them to do that? Argh, they were the only chocolates that my vegan-ignorant family understood were suitable for me! Now im going to have to tell them all I can't have After Eights for Xmas. Grrrrrrrrrrr

    Don't take on so, Joeybee.

I suppose you don't like Turkish Delight do you? That's another widely-available Christmassy thing that is normally (more or less) vegan I think. Not the chocolate-coated kind, the kind that's dusted with sugar.

Turkish Delights aren't bad, that's true...but still, they are not as good as After eights. I wonder if the sainsbury's and tesco's own versions are still okay for us though?

Reply I got from emailing Nestle...

Thank you for your recent email regarding After Eight Mints.

Unfortunately this product is no longer suitable for vegans due to the addition of butterfat to the ingredients. This product changed its status in March this year. We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause you.

Thank you once once again for writing to us and for your interest in our products.

    Shakeaway replied to say:-
What a shame! Nestle are Silly Billies to change that recipe, and I wonder if they will revert if they have any pressure (the way Maltesers and other popular lines went non-vegetarian a few months ago and then changed back after a backlash). Get all your Veganites to bombard Nestle with emails!
Thanks for the information and I will amend our menu for the next print run.

yeah, i don't think Nestle are likely to listen, they haven't exactly heeded public opinion in the past - they're one of the most widely-boycotted companies on the planet.

    I got a reply today:

    Dear Mr Roberts

Thank you for your recent enquiry via email.

We are sorry to learn that you are disappointed with the change of recipe to After Eight Mints however, may I explain in more detail why we have added butterfat to the ingredients in After Eight Mints.

Our Quality and Technical Department have assured us that the addition of a small amount of milk fat is an effective way of significantly increasing the resistance of the chocolate to bloom. Bloom is the slight whitening of the chocolate caused by storage in warm conditions. Although not harmful, it can make the mints look unappetising and it is the most common complaint made about After Eight by our consumers.

It is our constant endeavour to maintain the highest possible standards of quality and value in our products but we regret that this decision means that you and other vegans can no longer enjoy After Eight Mints. We do understand your disappointment at this change of recipe but hope you will understand the reasons behind the change.

I am taking the opportunity to attach a copy of our latest Vegan list which I hope will be of help to you.

Thank you once again for taking the time and trouble to contact us. Your comments have been carefully noted.

    Kind regards
