    Default Soya Butter

    Hi

Went to nice hotel in britain that did vegan breakfast...yum yum. Anyway to get to the point, they served me with "soya butter". I buy pure margarine but this stuff had a slightly salty taste to it like butter and was 10x more delicious than pure marg, does anyone know a) what it is? and b) where do i buy it from?

I don't know that we can tell you what it is or whether it was vegan or not without more information/packaging.

I have noticed that some butters, though soy-based, may contain whey and/or gelatin.

Things might be different in the UK than in Canada, but here all the margarines (even the ones calling themselves "soy margarine", "soy butter", "soy spread", etc) aren't vegan except for one brand, Earth Balance available in the speciality section of the supermarket.

Maybe that soy butter you go was vegan, maybe it wasn't.

    Hi SkaJen

I'm sure if the hotel people were clued up enough to be advertising a vegan breakfast that they would have made sure that what they were serving was vegan. Was it otherwise vegetarian?

All the soy margarine things I've ever seen in Britain have been vegan so maybe it's a bit different here. I've never ever seen 'vegan butter' though! I didn't know it existed, but then my area isn't great for vegan stuff. I'm curious now.

I was in a veggie restaurant at the weekend where they were serving what they called "vegan herb butter" with the soup. Mind you my friend who tried it thought it was horrible, so it can't have been the same stuff

I suspect they may just have meant soy margarine with added herbs, in which case you could try a few brands and see which one tastes best. I think there are a few in my local health food shop that are marged vegan - I never buy them myself though.

well the hotel did both vegan and veggie breakfasts. my bf is veggie and so i knew they knew what they were doing when i recieved my breakfast, i had completely different things to him, also i asked for some soya butter (as it was labelled on menu) and soya milka and they brought it out for me. the non-vegan butter was in little disposible pots already. i've never heard it called soya butter either, hence my curiosity!? it tasted slightly salty, and was far tastier than pure marg, maybe i should have asked them...i could always email them?

I'm sure it was. It sounds like they knew what they were doing!

Do you think it was homemade? My Mum had a go at making some spread stuff that was made from margarine and marmite!!! It was definitely salty, but not exactly nice I'm not a marmite fan though.

    Oh!

I remember seeing a recipe for vegan butter once. Made from olive oil (or another kind), whipped tofu, etc. It could be it.

Are you sure it wasn't the Organic Pure spread - the one in the blue pack?
I think that tastes identical to butter and is salty, whereas the yellow one is like marg.
Have you tried the blue one? If you have, you'll know what I mean.

It's not nicer than the yellow for cooking with thou. It has a higher water content and is as such dangerous to add to boiling sugar, as I've found out
