    Default Strep Throat

So, what I thought was an innocent, unassuming cold has surely reared its ugly head as a Streptococcal infection!

Does anyone know of a good natural cure for strep throat?
Since it is a bacterial infection, does that mean that antibiotics are necessary to oust it from my system? Or, are there natural antibiotics that are effective in treating it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I feel like I am dying.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I do believe antibiotics is the most effective cure.

See your doc and get a prescription.

BTW how did you diagnose it?

I know it is bogus to self-diagnose, but I have had it before, and these are the exact same symptoms.

I'm sorry to hear about that Zanahorias...

I used to get strep throat 3 times a year before i became vegan.

    I haven't had it since.

just remember to stay away from sugar.

try gargling with salt water. that always helps.

    I hope you feel better!

I don't eat sugar, so that's a plus, I guess. And the salt water gargle is soothing on my poor tonsils; I've been doing three times a day for the past four days.

We have some penicillin, so I guess I should take some. I just need to get some yogurt to get the beneficial bacteria back into my system when I'm done.

    Thank you guys.

try one of the teas labeled "throat coat"

They contain slippery(spelling???)elm which is very soothing as long as you continue to drink it. It wont help you other than to make your throat less "raw" feeling.

You should see a doctor though. Once I had strep throat and it turned into this huge nasty infection all in my throat and chest.

If you are getting strep throat that often, you should probably get your tonsils removed. It's important to see a doctor, because if the infection causes an abcess in your throat, it can get pretty bad.

Actually, this is the first time I've had it in about six years. And I probably should see a doctor, but money is tight and I doubt that my parents will take me for that very reason...

You know, I really am thinking about moving to Canada! I alsways talk with my parents about the socialization of medicine, and the general governmetal system, and we get into these huge arguments about how they think it is bad and then try to say that there are no socialized countries that are successful. Whatever. I try to tell them about the countries that clearly are successful and providing for their citizens and they rant on about how they can't go to war and have excess like America. Those poor wimpy socialist countries...

What can I say though, they're republicans...

Oh, well if it hasn't been for six years then you probably shouldn't worry about it being a tonsil problem.

    I found this online:

    <A name=CP_JUMP_68735>
When Should I See a Doctor For A Sore Throat?

Whenever a sore throat is severe, persists longer than the usual five- to seven- day duration of a cold or flu, and is not associated with an avoidable allergy or irritation, you should seek medical attention. The following signs and symptoms should alert you to see your physician:
    • Severe and prolonged sore throat
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Difficulty swallowing
    • Difficulty opening the mouth
    • Joint pain
    • Earache
    • Rash
    • Fever (over 101°)
    • Blood in saliva or phlegm
    • Frequently recurring sore throat
    • Lump in neck
    • Hoarseness lasting over two weeks

and then there are tips on treating a sore throat (it says to use honey, b/c it's not from a vegan website.) I always use lemon in my tea if I have a sore throat because the lemon's acicity can kill germs.

How Can I Treat My Sore Throat?

A mild sore throat associated with cold or flu symptoms can be made more comfortable with the following remedies:
    • Increase your liquid intake.
    • Warm tea with honey is a favorite home remedy.
    • Use a steamer or humidifier in your bedroom.
    • Gargle with warm salt water several times daily: ¼ tsp. salt to ½ cup water.
    • Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol Sore Throat®, Tempra®) or ibuprofen (Motrin IB®, Advil®).

Wow! I am suprised. Are there really no natural remedies for strep throat? I see lots of remedies here for pain relief but nothing really as a cure.

I have used antibiotics once in the past 11 or so years and if I got sick with strep throat I would really not like to have to resort to using them.

I hope that whatever choice you make to treat your strep throat, that you recover quickly Zanahorias.

Well anything that would boost one's immune system would help out, I assume. Like echinacea, which boosts your immune system and also has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.

If it really is strep infection (which you can only know by having a throat swab, though docs tend to consider it more likely if your tonsils are big, red and pussy....nice!) you really must take antibiotics, though of course for most 'ordinary' sore throats they won't do any good (because most are viral). But strep throat is serious and can have some nasty effects later on. I had it after my first year at uni...I was living on cheap white bread and pasta and economy beans and tomato sauce....held off the antibiotics for a week until it got so bad I couldn't swallow. They made me feel really ill. Afterwards I got this rash on my shins and joint pains so I couldn't get up the stairs, and my knees and hips were never quite the same again I think. So the moral of that story is eat well in the first place, but if you get sick, see a doc for a throat swab asap and take the drugs if necessary. Some docs will prescribe them without doing a throat swab, based on what your throat looks like, how bad it is etc. That's a bit of a matter of opinion I suppose.

I'm glad I waited on the antibiotics, because I woke up this morning and I feel so much better. I can speak, swallow, and don't have a pounding headache! I stayed home though, just in case, so that I can rest up and be fully regenerated for tomorrow when I have to deal with everything I've missed these past days.

Yay! So glad you're feeling better. Maybe you can just take some eccanacea and vitamin C's to help keep any remnants of the sickness away.

Hi, Sorry this is my first post and haven't introduced myself. Only joined yesterday as have recently gone from being veggie to vegan, but "Propolis" is excellent for all throat infections such as strep throat or tonsilitus. It is made from tree bark and is a natural antibiotic. I used it on a really bad case of tonsilitis recently and I noticed a big improvement within a day. You can buy it in any good health food shop, but I swear by it now.

    Good Luck

    Propolis isn't vegan, though.

A resinous substance collected from the buds of certain trees by bees and used as a cement or sealant in the construction of their hives.

Oops! I am so sorry! I honestly thought Propolis was vegan and was just the tree bark. I was only veggie, not vegan at the time of using it and thought by it saying on the label no animals were harmed that it was vegan. I even checked on this website, https://www.archalifax.com/animalder...edients/p.html so once again, sorry for the blunder!
