    Thumbs down the Heifer organization

I'm watching 60 min. on TV right now and they're showing success stories the Heifer organization (gives live animal to third world children) is behind. An African girl was put through school thanks to one goat; she sold the milk and used the money for tuition and material. What breaks my heart, though, is that the goats were tied to a tree with a very thin and only a few inches long rope. And some were in extremely small homemade cages. What kind organization is this? Shipping animals across the globe and let them live in misery before slaughter so that a child can go to school. They also want to give you the impression that animals and humans live very peacefully side by side...After all, children love animals, right? Talking about hypocracy.

I received their catalog for Christmas. It made me really sad to see pictures of a child holding a lamb, looking like best friends...then you know the lamb is going to be slaughtered shortly there after There are many other reptuable organizations to support which do not force you to make a decision between the life of a child and an animal. Why not support both.

My mother raises money for that organization in her church. It makes me terribly sad. I can see why it is appealing, because it is more "sustainable" than giving money, when you give an animal that lays eggs or gives (I use that term loosely) milk. At least she makes a point to only raise money for those animals that are used for their by-products (mostly because she raises the money through the children and doesn't want them to think the animal will be killed). I guess she ignores the facts that they are killed for their meat when they are no longer useful and kept in horrible conditions.

Default [article] Heifer International: More Hype than Hope

This time of year a lot of people are getting catalogs from Heifer International, a charity promoting the use of nonhuman animals. If you want to know more about how this organization uses animals I have an article in the latest issue of Friends of Animals' Act•ionLine magazine, "Heifer International: More Hype than Hope".
The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites or women for men. —Alice Walker

I was surprised to find that Wilmington College, a Quaker college
founded by slavery abolitionists... was promoting
    slavery to animals.

What is worse than shipping a baby animal overseas to
    be slaughtered and eaten?

    HEIFER INTERNATIONAL'S SHIPS OF DEATH

Heifer staff are promoting the shipping of baby animals
oversees to be exploited andthen slaughtered:

    Heifer International:
    ships of death..

Heifer International in violation of the Christianity it wears on
its sleeve is violating the vegetarian example of Jesus
as it spreads world hunger, energy waste, animal product
related disease, and most importantly animal agony.
Heifer separates baby animals from their mothers.. shipping
them in a terrorized state in small cages to strange lands.. where their
milk and eggs are stolen... before they are butchered and devoured.

I'm sure that poor, hungry people appreciate any gift of food or source of income that is given to them, but let's look at this logically:

Livestock are not absent from the places where the recipients live. The issue is that these people cannot afford to buy livestock. They are too poor. So Heifer ships animals to them. Now, why would one ship animals to these recipients when it would most likely be cheaper to buy the livestock at local markets? Or why not give the recipients cash or goods to buy or trade for the livestock themselves? Think about it. Whom is this charity helping most?

Agree. I don't know how someone can even call the Heifer Project a sustainable organisation. To ship animals across the globe certainly isn't. Sending money or help them start growing their own veggies is.

What I find most odd is that this promotes the terribly unsustainable diet and lifestyle that is led by the West.
