    Default Honey substitutes

    Hi all,

    Can anyone recommend a good honey substitute for me? It seems like I keep coming across recipes that are vegan except for ingredients like "1 tablespoon honey". Would just using an equal amount of vegan sugar have the same effect?

    Agave nectar! Brown rice syrup! Maple syrup! (or sugar and a bit of liquid).

    maple syrup
    molasses, maybe
    fruit juice concentrate
    corn syrup

    It depends what the purpose of the honey is in the recipe- it could be for making things stick together, or it could be for sweetening. I'm sure just adding a little bit of sugar would be fine. You could probably just leave it out, if it's only for flavor, and there is already sugar somewhere else in the recipe.

    i agree with all of the above. for a more natural sugar you can also use fruit straight from the blender or apple sauce for instance. on that note any sort of jam might work as well to sweeten somethng up.

    i love love love agave nectar. ive been told that you dont get the spikes with agave nectar like you get with sugar, dont know to which extent this is true, but for my daughter of three i try not to use any sugar, but using fresh fruits as much as i can or a little bit of agave nectar. i always go for the one darkest in colour if there is a choice.

    Yes, its more natural and 100% vegan. Have you ever tried adding a fruit that is high in sugar (strawberries, kiwi, etc) Im not sure if the recipe can changed to add a fruit instead of a honey substitute

    There is also a vegan honey substitute you can buy, a product made from fruit to be like honey called sweet freedom. I don't like the lighter one but the darker one tastes a lot like honey:

    I second the vote for sweet freedom. It's yummy, and lacks some of the eco concerns of agave.

    They sell it in quite a lot of the supermarkets now

    I once needed half a cup of maple syrup for cupcakes but didn't have any... I just made up a kind of syrup using sugar and soya milk and it worked fine

    I tried the dark agave and didn't care for it. It had a mineral-y taste or something. Is the light agave appreciably different in taste? Is it closer to a honey flavor? I'd like to try it but thought I'd find out if it's really much different first.

    ^ I only ever use light agave and it tastes delicious, really light and sweet. Like a much sweeter honey (I've read that you can use less agave due to this extra sweetness...) Really recommend it - it's great drizzled on cereal or over porridge as well

    When I was living in the UK I was only using the lighter version on top of pancakes or whatever and the darker version in baking products like muffins etc. I'm currently living in Canada and here I only use the dark version. The taste of the brand I'm using here is not off-putting at all on it's own and I figure it's slightly better for you than the lighter version.
