I am eating my very first red lentil dahl.

I made it myself with Stickydate's recipe (In the Banana's Dahl Thread). I made it per recipe, and added 1/2 can diced salt free tomatos, some red chilli paste and a few tablespoons olive oil towards the end. Garnished with fresh corriander (cilantro as we call it) and eating it with naan and mango juice.

    Yum!

Lentils and lemons are boyfriend and girlfriend. They are perfect together, haven't you heard?
So, tigerlily, tonight while i was shopping for my dahl ingredients, I decided to pick up a lemon as "lemons and lentils are boyfriend and girlfriend"

Then I got home and realized that my recipe actually called for a lemon! I had forgotten to write it down.

Thank goodness I picked one up - you saved the day!

i'm tired of being hungry in the morning, so this morning i woke up 3 hours before i had to be at uni. and i made:

2 wholemeal seeded bagels with marinated tofu & chestnut mushrooms topped with spinach & coriander. and a smoothie to go with it!

    *drools*

i have suddenly developed a taste for spinach. i hated it as a kid. i think thats cos my mum always cooked it & made it soggy. she put me off a lot of food this way.

    me + spinach = <3

I never do a full-on breakfast with traditional foods, so I decided that tonight would be a breakfast-for-dinner feast. Pancakes with organic maple syrup, roasted herbed potatoes, and tempeh bacon. It was the best meal I've had in weeks and now I'm happy, stuffed, ready for a nap, and really wishing I didn't still have work to do.

I don't like breakfast in the morning either. Rather eat either brunch or make a dinner of it. What you made sounds sooooo good!!! Maybe this weekend I'll get it together to make pancakes too. How did you make tempeh bacon?

How did you make tempeh bacon?
The recipe is from Vegan with a Vengeance:

3 tbs Bragg Liquid Aminos or tamari or soy sauce (I used tamari)*

1/3 cup apple cider (I mistakenly used apple cider vinegar, but that just made it nice and tangy)

    1 teaspoon tomato paste

1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke (I couldn't find liquid smoke, so replaced the smoke and tomato paste with Annie's Smoky Maple BBQ sauce)

    1 8-oz package tempeh

2 cloves garlic (I forgot to do the garlic part)

2 tbs peanut oil or vegetable oil (I used peanut)

To make the marinade, combine the tamari, cider, tomato paste, and liquid smoke in a wide shallow bowl and mix with a fork until the tomato paste is fully dissolved. Set aside.

Cut the tempeh into thin strips (less than 1/4 inch thick) lengthwise. You should be able to get about tweleve strips. Rub the strips with the crushed garlic, then toss the garlic cloves into the mariande. Submerge the tempeh strips in the mariande and let sit, turning occasionally, for at least an hour an up to overnight. After marinating, discard the garlic.

Heat the peanut oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the tempeh strips and cook for 4 minutes on one side; the bottom should be nicely browned. Flip the strips over and pour the remainder of the marinade over them; if there isn't much mariande left add a splash of water. Cover and let cook for 3 more minutes, until the liquid is absorbed. Uncover and check for doneness; if necessary , keep cooking uncovered until all sides are nicely browned. Remove from heat and serve.

    * I halved all the measurements.

As the cookbook author said, this won't fool an omni into thinking she's eating real bacon, but it's quite tasty in its own right. And who wants to eat real bacon anyway? The FDA doesn't even classify it as food.

I forgot to take note what country you're in, but if you don't use these measurements, try Googling "cooking conversions." I don't remember what website I used, but I've had luck with this in the past.

That sounds easy to do. Like the part where it doesn't really taste like bacon. Thanks!!!! I'll let you know how it turns out.

    where is the recipe?

on edit - Ok, I read your disclaimer about not giving them out...you are such a tease Mr. Flibble! Didn't anyone tell you it's not nice to get a girl all excited about chocolate cake and then not deliver the recipe?

Homemade mushroom, yellow pepper and garlic pizza with a sprinkling of redwoods melty cheese and parmezanno. I looooove my breadmaker.

I had a banana, peach and flax smoothie to go with it, which was pretty tasty too

lastnight, my boyfriend copied a sainsburys jamie oliver idea (you might have seen the ad on tv if youre in the uk) & made us:

2 tortillas warmed in a pan with mushrooms, spring onions, red peppers and melty cheese in the middle. (apparently called mexican cheese on toast!)

oh my god..it was so good. he used his normal cheese, and i used redwood cheese (goes really nice with mushrooms & spring onion!!)

    m-mmmm!

Yesterday I made a steamed chocolate sponge pudding...with a difference.

I put half the sponge mix in the pudding bowl made a 'well' in it and added an entire bar of Maya Gold chocolate, finely chopped, and covered it with the remaining pudding mix. Steamed it for an hour and twenty minutes and served with chocolate custard.

It was deeeelicious - the chocolate had melted beautifully for the most part with some soaking into the surrounding sponge giving an amost truffley texture. The bitter orange and spices in the Maya Gold were also enhanced due to being warm....I anticipated it would be good but I was pleasantly surprised by how good it truly was!!!!

    That sounds tasty, lozza

I was in Chicago this weekend, and there was an organic vegan raw restaurant called Karyn's. I ordered some raw stuffed pizza with a nut crust and lots of veggies and spices....yummm And, for dessert, I had an absolutely fantastic smoothie made of nutmilk, banana, dates, and vanilla! OMG, it was such an incredibly delicious meal They had so many other wonderful things there that I wish I can try someday!

I loved the atmosphere, too! They have a casual cafe side with an all you can eat bar and a juice bar...they sell a lot of books, foods, and other products there, and have a corner with comfy couches where you can read or study! The other side is a dim-lighted, well-decorated fine dining restaurant

Just a note to those who are close to Chicago and might visit: they label themselves as a vegan restaurant, though quite a few of their products (including their wonderfully-looking cakes) have honey in them, so you have to be careful and ask.

Gravy. I'm a gravy nut and this was the best vegetarian gravy I've ever had. I made it using the diner gravy recipe from The Chicago Diner Cookbook. I had to use twice the amount of roux suggested and next time I'll halve the amount of tamari, but still, yum.

Wow, id love to try this place. That meal sounds delicious. I find it really hard trying to be raw, i lack the time and inspiration. This is what eating out should be about; sampling things you cant make yourself. Shame about the honey though.

That's me. If I eat more than one piece of any citrus more often than twice a week, the corners of my mouth get raw and flaky. I can't every buy orange juice because at that rate I can't drink the whole bottle/carton before it gets old and yucky.

BTW, it's really snowing hard right now. Weatherbug said to expect only 4 inches of accumulation, but I really think it's going to be more.

I was about to reply that I think peanut butter is an American thing when I noticed Insubordination is in Australia.

Wait, didn't Claire on "Lost" once say she's the only Australian in the country that likes peanut butter? Now I'm confused.

I'm in the UK and I LOVE peanut butter... I've had it all my life, so I don't think it's just an American thing ... At my local health food shop you can buy it by the (small) bucketload!!

Nice........... May go and have some now in fact... on new wholemeal rye bread....
