flibble it must have been the mouthwash, i think there must be millions of vegan anarchists around who have huge concerns about their dental hygeine
Well I went shopping yesterday in my co-op, got mankind razor and blades, anti-perspirant deo, hair gel, anti-D shampoo, and lots of other goodies!
Thank heavens for clear labelling.
How can you eat anything with eyes? ~Will Kellogg
The Co-op here is abit pants. Well infact there are several and none are really big enough to stock all the cool shit you guys talk about. There is a big supermarket size co-op by my mum and I always pop in and get some stuff....just a shame there isn't more of a market for it here.
The taste of anything in my mouth for 5 seconds does not equate to the beauty and complexity of life.
I went to my co-op yesterday to stock up on toiletries and cleaning products. I just wish they did more vegan food stuffs, maybe its just my small shop but there is very little food.
Having said that I am just munching on pasta with a co-op sundried tomato and basil sauce. Not bad at all for a jar sauce!
I too went to my Co-op yesterday and was very disappointed. I'd not been for some weeks and I don't think it was my imagination that there seemed to be significantly less own brand food labelled 'suitable for vegans' than previously. I especially noticed this in the cereals. Also it's not own brand I know but I was disappointed to see all the variety of Green + Blacks chocolate bars contained powdered cow's milk. Yuk!
Small co-ops (particularly glorified news agents) are often quite rubbish. Larger stores are generally good, though they knocked down the one I used to shop at and built an IKEA.

They have a lot of shelf space reserved for christmas tacky atm, means less space for vegan goodies until next year!

Ive found lots of donuts there recently though. I can forgive them them their crapness if there are donuts.
On special offer at Newgate Street Co-op Newcastle, sensitive/totalcare toothpaste 62 pence; mouthwash 500 ml 51 pence.
Look for the red label "better than half price" its on a lot of items at the moment.

It's not quite worth driving to newcastle for, but that is pretty damned cheap!

I can't afford much at the coop by my house because im poor and a student and every thing is expensive. It doesn't help that its designed for a bunch of snobby yuppies and only certain clicks of neo hippies. I feel like they are tyring to keep poor welfare working class people out by upping the price on every thing which is absolute crap. They aslo do not accept food stamps etc with some poor excuse in the newspaper saying they have tried but the machine "doesn't work". So I don't try to support mine.
Other then that, they have some delicious vegan cakes and baked goods. I got a specialized cake made for my birthday!
hi, lifeonmars. just so you know, this thread is regarding the UK co-operative food shops.
Yes, our UK co-op aka "The Co-op" has some of the cheapest UK vegan toiletries and household cleaning products...they are not available outside the UK AFAIK. They are way cheaper than Lush or any of the specialist vegan toiletry suppliers.

Yes, I love the Co-op. I use their shampoo and conditioner and I get one of their hairsprays which is vegan too!

the Co-op nearest where i'm living at the moment does jam doughnuts with apple/raspberry/plum flavour jam, labelled Co-operative Bakery in white paper bags and actually marked 'suitable for vegetarians and vegans'
'The word gorilla was derived from the Greek word Gorillai (a "tribe of hairy women")'
got a co-op in the village, quite nice and a few good things but not big enough at all really, I miss Normid (co-ops old BIG shops that had entertainment departments, household appliance dept etc) they need to start doing more big shops again, along the lines of Waitrose (and pay staff like waitrose too). At my local I can get detergent and washing up liquid and things like that but no spread or handwash or shower gell etc.
If I sink to the bottom I can run to the shore.
My local Co-op has got the donuts and fair trade mince pies. I have eaten lots.
Blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer "extortion". The "X" makes it sound cool.
This post by Mzee points out that Co-op have been removing the word 'vegan' from labels on their own brand foods. It was posted in the 'vegan labelling' thread but I thought Co-op fans would be interested to know - I didn't know about this as don't shop there often enough to notice such changes.
Perhaps we all need to contact them to complain and question why this is happening.

I just want to rave about the vegan doughnuts at the co-op - or Scotmid as it is known in my part of Scotland. They are nothing special - but they are the first doughnuts I have had since I turned vegan. I hope I won't eat them often but it is great knowing they exist...
I've noticed them reducing the vegan stuff too - example - they used to have two types of Pure, then it was just one and now they don't stock it at all. But they do have Vitalite which is vegan at last. I just prefer Pure and will have to go to a large Tesco to get hold of in future. Their own-brand dark chocolate used to be vegan but now has milk something in it.
i ate three Co-op jam doughnuts last night there are 2 Co-ops on my way home from work and it's just too tempting!
i've never seen Pure in any Co-op branch around here, i haven't tried Vitalite but i will look out for it and see what it's like.

my local Co-op had a 6" blackberry and apple pie in the bakery section one night last week so i felt it my duty to try it out it was very good, but unfortunately they didn't have any soya cream or custard, i had to use a carton of Soyatoo on it that was at the back of my cupboard which i didn't like, would've been much better with Alpro.
'The word gorilla was derived from the Greek word Gorillai (a "tribe of hairy women")'
I noticed that their apple pie and the apple lattices are vegan as well as the apple and blackberry. Must stock up on Alpro custard before I go near Scotmid again.
The Scotmid near me is very large - the smaller ones didn't usually stock Pure nor do they stock vitalite, or alpro yogurt...
Wow, I never realized the co-op had vegan doughnuts. I can't believe the amount of times I must have walked past them and never bought any.. I used to live somewhere that had a giant Co-op and I used to get my weekly shopping in there but never even went near the cakes because I assumed they would all have dairy in. All these years without doughnuts and for no reason lol.
*winces at the thought of MP's disappointment* It's the bakery stuff.
They aren't baked on site, though, I don't think, so you still might find them.
"Danger" could be my middle name … but it's "John"
Damn I knew it I'll have a look anyway but won't hold my breath
The only normal people are the ones you don't know very well
They had the own bakery apple pies and apple blackberry pies when I was in Newgate Street co-op last, also the doughnuts and some iced buns with pink icing which were also suitable for vegans, I restrained myself from buying even tho the pies were marked down- to 85p?
See my local diary ... http://herbwormwood.blogspot.com/
I popped into a Co-op today on a doughnut hunt. They had a little bakery bit but as its Sunday, was a bit bare. All they had were a few buns and a non-vegan apple pie. It was actually a pretty rubbish Co-op, I left with a loaf of wholemeal bread and a reduced lettuce!
jam tarts! you have just triggered a massive craving
Co-ops differ massively in what range of goods they stock, our Newgate Street one is fairly good, we have a big student and asian population in the area, whereas my mother's co-op in a small village, the range of vegan items is very poor.

Nom nom i found doughnuts!! And resisted also purchasing an apple pie... maybe tomorrow

Thanks to those who pointed out about the doughnuts; I went and bought some today and they were fab with the home made soya lattes for our lunchtime treat.

I think some people are confused about what they are looking for when they go in for coop doughnuts - maybe whoever gets some could post a pic of the pack... i will do it later if i get some
Yes, I've always seen Cuisine De France (?) stuff and assumed this is what we were talking about - but yesterday I saw stuff marked as Co-op's own bakery.
Idleness is not doing nothing. Idleness is being free to do anything. - Floyd Dell
I'd heard that the cuisine de france donuts were vegan but only when made for the co-op.
No sense being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.
I picked up today in our local coop 2 cartons of fresh soup: a mixed italian bean one and tomato and chilli, both labelled suitable for vegans. Now as a veggie I wouldn't have dreamed of having canned soups, always enjoyed homemade soups, BUT I also had the option of just nipping out for a sarny at the local deli if I hadn't packed lunch for work etc... but now, THE jack pot and beans option doesn't always appeal (!), so I've taken to hunting out prepared soups as an option for the 'I haven't got any leftovers or fresh salad/can't be bothered to prepare something' days!
Must say, not found many canned/preapred soups since becoming vegan so HAD to pick up these...you know how it is!
