    Capone Island.

    http://www.royalpalm.com/news/10_03_04.html

They say that every September. I forgot the exact date. A ghost roams at Capone island. He supposedly is an Opera singer who was killed. He went looking for his wife. Who was kidnapped by Al Capone and they shot him. So sometime in September you can hear him singing early in the morning.

Manish, I have not been to North India much. I grew up in the south. I was in New Delhi for a while. But never really got a chance to explore. I would love to travel and admire the intricate beauty of many historic cities.

I need to make myself sometime to visit north India.

The first flushing toilet was installed in my old home town.

That is the sole thing it can claim to have achieved.

    Forth Bridge

This Arthur's Seat, which is a big hill (extinct volcano) right in the middle of the city, great for walking.

I live an hour from Mauna Kea, the tallest and most sacred mountain in Hawaii, and home to 13 world class telescopes. It's said to be one of the best places on earth for observing!

Back home in Victoria, BC, we have the Butchart Gardens, a large, beautiful garden and very popular tourist attraction. Click on "click here to see more images" to see lots of beautiful photos of the flowers and plants. There are so many beautiful and historical places near Victoria that I can't count them all!

Kanch Mandir ( glass temple) here in Indore :- A very famous Jain temple.

Outer side is huge. You can click to see bigger outer side.

My old office premises is 1 minute walking distance from this temple. I have spent 25 years of my life by living close to this temple area. It is in the heart of city area.

in my city we just had a minor victory regarding a bank built in the 1960's by some famous architect (kessler?) the city was going to tear it down and literally put up a parking lot. what is india going to do with that place?? certainly not put up a parking lot!

The only really place with any history around here is Roche Abbey

unfortunately it's part of the estate of Lord Scarborough (who sanctions Grouse shooting on his land ) so shan't be visiting it anymore unfortunately - which is a shame as it's really beautiful

Of course I'm serious. If Australia had been inhabited at the time of Cook's arrival it could not have been claimed under international law ('terra nullius') whereby land could be 'occupied for the first time by another country and so brought under that country's ownership.' (OED)
Are you seriously suggesting that the British would lie about such a thing and occupy a country illegally?

    How odd.
I suppose America was also uninhabited at the time of Christopher Columbus?
" One of the most significant dates during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs was 12th October 1492: the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus."
    http://www.sispain.org/english/history/discover.html

It appears from this Australian website
    http://www.cultureandrecreation.gov....ralianhistory/
that the settlers did not believe Australia to be uninhabited at all.
Come on Geoff, appease me please by posting some Aboriginal historical sites and say what period they date from. Its a challenge, Geoff. I dare you!

You guys in the UK are so lucky to live amongst such beautiful old buildings!! The only old things around here are old grain towers that the trains pulled into and they aren't pretty in the slightest. I wish I had such beautiful places to visit so close to home. Lucky lucky!

VeggieWoman, I have been to York a couple of times. Such a small town and very beautiful. The York Minster is amazing. I went there last year with my Australian friend. We took the guided tour of the Minster, and we could note the very intricate and delicate structure. The guide pointed us the set of goof-ups that the architects made when the minster was being constructed. For example, the curved roof.

There is so much to learn in such a small place. I would like to go again soon. It is not far from Leeds.
