Alors forcément on trouve quoi?

    Question Re: Vegan France

    Hello Yorbo

Are eggs and milk used a lot in France - I was under the impression that such things didn't happen in France? I thought fresh-baked bread in France consisted of just yeast, flour, water, salt, sugar and a little oil - have I been misinformed?

    thanks

My eldest daughter (11 this weekend) is going on a trip to France (Boulogne) with her school in June, it's only a day trip. They have to take a packed lunch and then eat a cooked meal at a hypermarket. They will visit the old town of Boulogne and a Museum (Musee Historique).

My husband is taking a holiday day from work and going as one of the accompanying adults on the trip so will be with her as regards asking for vegan food (he also plans to take a lot more for them both than one meal of food in case there is nothing vegan to eat as a cooked meal at the hypermarket restaurant).

What can anyone advise as to asking about food at the hypermarket? As a last resort is it usually possible in such a place to get something basic and simple such as baked potatoes and beans? This is the usual last resort for vegans here in the UK in supermarket cafes (or chips and beans). My daughter is not confident about trying to speak French and my husband says he was never much good at it at school either! I guess they might need a few useful phrases to get the message across about veganism as it is a long time since I learned any French, although I was OK at it at school, I would now be very lacking in confidence about speaking it! It would be nice if they could have something as a cooked meal and for it to not be seen as a big problem. I am not going on the day trip because we have two other children. Do they usually do ratatouille in these places?

    Sorry for writing in English!

The bigger the hyper market the more likely you are to find a good selection of soya yoghurts and other soya products. etc..usually next to the slimming type foods (produits diétetiques) If they will be eating in a restaurant connected to a supermarket like Casino or Flunch then there is always a salad bar where you can make up your own salad but watch out for sauces mixed in to certain dishes, there are usually plenty that are just raw. Couscous salad (taboul&#233 is very often available with peppers and olives etc. There is often a place where they cook pasta for you but very often the pasta has eggs in..so watch out. I have seen ratatouille served as an accompanying dish and you could ask for that with rice or just ask for whatever veg. they have. It is often more cooked than I would like..
Anyway, I hope that they have a good trip.

    Dear French people,

could you please tell me what food in student accommodation is like?
I'm going to Nancy for a four-week summer course in July, and we'll be living in halls and eat in the café. I don't mind living off baguette and fruit if necessary, but maybe you could tell me in advance what to expect. How difficult is it generally to get vegan food at uni?

It is hard but not impossible to find vegan food. My advice to you is tell the cafeteria/canteen people that you are vegetarian as most people do not know what veganism is. At my uni, the lady knows that I do not eat meat and will always prepare me a special plate with whatever veggies they have. Usually they always have at least 2 different types of vegetables : potatoes, carrots, green beans. Then again it depends of the size of the canteen.

You will probably get bored of the food, so I suggest you try, as someone mentioned, ethnic restaurants : fallafels, houmous....

And you will always have the local favourite, our pride and joy : the one and only BAGUETTE !!!

Thanks for your reply, Lionel. Given that food is included and that I'll be short of money anyway, I'll have to stick to what's on offer in the canteen and make sure to be friends with the people there
That just leaves getting round the wine-tasting evening somehow...

hehe there's some french people here I know, so hello

Veganism in France is growing up for some years, thanks to message boards, national et local organizations.

there's now a french vegan board for example : http://forum.vegan.fr/

Organizations and projects are more and more.

Unfortunately, there's no french vegan society and Peta France live a very hard beginning.

National Organization promote animal welfare and very hardly vegetarism (and never veganism of course).

Alliance Végétarienne is the organization devoted to our representation, but there's a lot of polemics about them.

Today, there's several little groups, organized geographicaly or by thematics. ie :

    - Vegnord (that I've founded ) : for vegetarian and vegan from Northern France
    - International Campaigns : against animal experiments and against all forms of animal exploitation
    - Droits des Animaux : hunt sabotage
    - Acta : Bordeaux
    - Animal Amnistie & AVIS : around Toulouse
    - L214 : against foie gras
    - AVA : Auvergne
    - Les vaches rouges (red cows) : Clermont Ferrand
    - Les furieuses carrotes (angry carrots) : veganism & animal experiments, Paris & western France
    - etc etc

    so now let's tak

That's right there are more and more groups for animals' rights and veganism in France.

I work with "droits des animaux" (anmals' rights) http://www.droitsdesanimaux.net/, our association is active in 10 big city in France (Paris, Strasbourg, reims, Rennes, Nantes, Quimper, Dijon, Lyon, Nice...).

We did a "vegan guide" on Paris. It is full of restaurant, organic and non organic store where you can buy vegan food.

Here is the links to see it :

    http://www.droitsdesanimaux.net/prod...egan-recto.jpg

We are working on vegan guides for : Germany, Belgium, Netherland, Ireland and UK. If some of you want to help us make those guides, please join us.

We did too with 8 associations and groups a "go vegan" flyer :

Here is the links to read it in french :

    http://i30.servimg.com/u/f30/12/80/87/13/govega12.jpg

We published the first vegan cook book in french at the price of 3 € (2,5 £) :

We can say that France is going vegan, even it is really late from country like UK or Germany.

Je parle le Francais! J'ai habite 12 ans en France quand j'etais jeune!

We last went down to the south of France last april, my first time going as a vegan, and I was actually pleasantly surprised at the amount of vegan food available in the big supermarkets, including soya yoghurts and some delicious soya steak we had, can't remember the make off hand. We also found a vegan b&b and a vegan restaurant in Perpignan.

This certainly shows things are improving, and I can't wait for my next trip hopefully next year.

By the way, french buddies, what do you think of the programme in Fr3 "·30 millions d´amies"? I can watch it from here Basque Country and I got a split mind about it: It´s tremendously welfarist, true, mostly caring about the sa-called "pets" while it forgets the plight of other animals not considered: "Amies" but merely: "Nourriture"
But on the other hand it may draw some people to appreciate animals on the whole, as a first step into animalism
Well, actually I don´t think it will, but I´d like to know what your view is on this.

The bread in France is better than in England. But can you tell me why it is that the French like McDonalds? I believe there are more McDonalds in France than elsewhere in Europe. We refer to McDonalds hamburgers as industrial food (junk food).
