Café Maitreya will no longer open in the daytimes.

Some of you will already be aware that, from the beginning of May, Café Maitreya will focus on evening business and no longer open during the daytimes. Sunday 30th April will be the last time we open in the daytimes - but will continue to open in the evenings as usual (Tuesday to Saturday from 6.45pm).

I realise that many people will be disappointed and, along with communicating the change, I also want to explain why we've reached this decision.

Was at Cafe Kino (Bristol, Nine Tree Hill, Off Stokes Croft) today on it's opening day. It was going to be called "Cafe Mono" but changed it's name at the last minute. We had some good chips and chocolate cake. Get this - they do vegan coissonts(spelling?)! I haven't have them for about 17 years! Really friendly people, all vegan food, lots of space to sit downstairs and open to suggestions of what they should put on the menu. They're planning to open 11am - 10pm every day, but this may change.

I popped in today, had a vegan breakfast with the works, a lovely smoothie, and of course, that chocolate cake. Will be spending some time here me thinks.

ShakeAway those people that produce soya milk and soya ice cream shakes in over 30 vegan flavours, are opening shop number eight, this time at 8/9 The Arcade, Bristol, BS1 3JA soon.

I was at Cafe Kino this afteroon and had falafals, pitta bread, humous and salad followed by chocolate cake. All washed down with a beautiful Westons cider!

It was gert lush grub I tells ya!

There's only me at the moment cos no-one else seems to be able to do it on that day so anyone with a spare few hours that likes standing on street corners rattling tins or if there are a few of us we could even get it together to have a table on which we can pile lots of leaflets and stuff

Last year there was Good Thai-dins, Good Gracious Healthy Foods, Now and Zen, and Manic Organic amongst others selling vegan food as far as I'm aware. Manic Organic was too good, so I only ate there, not cheap though. I'm not sure what offerings there will be for booze, but you can take you own in, up to 8 cans or 2 litres wine/beer or 1 litre of spirits as long as its not in glass. I guess there will be more info in Venue either this week or next.

We are just back from a week in Bristol (including a few days out to other places within easy travelling distance)!

We went to Cafe Kino, loved it, also met some vegan friends we had not seen for ages.

Can someone explain to me some of the Bristol dialect mentioned in the Bristol Vegan Guide, such as what does "daps" mean? That one has been bugging me!

Daps are pumps or plimsols. The term may sometimes be applied to trainers as well. Are you speaking of the "Theyz me daps mind!" t- shirts that Beast do?

Great to see vegan forum friends at the Bristol Vegan's meet yesterday, along with local vegans. Top job on food from Cafe Kino even though they did run out of both chocolate cake and then ice cream sundays!

Is anyone planning on going to the Organic show around the docks(Bristol) on 2nd and 3rd September? I usually find it a bit organic meat and dairy heavy, but you can still find some good veg and vegan stuff. I think I may be down there at some point if anyone wants to meet up.

Venue has the map and program for the event. You have to pay to get in this year- £3.50 I think. There do seem to be a few Vegan things there - both Viva and Vegetarian and Vegan Foundation will be there. Also lots of other interesting food places and talks too.
It's also the kite festival over that weekend which I enjoy because it's so much quieter than the other events up at Ashton Court.
We are just so lucky here in Bristol!

I work in the centre of Bristol and am going out with colleagues for a meal this week. I suggested this place as it should please everyone - I saw they are vegan friendly on the Vegan Bristol site.

Has anyone got any tips or recommendations from the menu? Are they as vegan friendly as I have heard?

That's the place on Colston st isn't it? You just tell them you're vegan when you order and they'll understand. Their meals tend not to be to hot. I think they make to order, all seems very fresh and not too greasy.

It is, yes. I feel a lot happier now you've said they understand at the point of ordering. I'm only a few months vegan and still getting used to these situations.

There are loads of places for vegans to eat in Bristol. Most are listed on the Bristol Vegan's website for which there'll be some links above.
My kids particularly like Cafe Kino on Nine Tree hill off Stokes Croft. Mainly because they do chips and vegan chocolate cake!

I live in Glastonbury and work in Bristol. I think glastonbury is a wonderful town and has many vegan and veggie eateries. They out number the omni ones in fact. Vegan, organic, fair trade etc are all a way of life in our little town.

Cookey, we've really got used to living in the sticks since moving to Wales and we like it, but I do want to be closer to towns, as where we are, we have to drive for at least half an hour to get into the nearest town with decent shops which is Swansea. We're going to visit Cafe Kino, please tell me that their Leek, Mushroom and 'Bacon' Pie is vegan! The Tapas sounds lovely too.

Pagan Vegan, we did look at houses in Glastonbury a few years ago, but it just didn't happen. We keep thinking about Glastonbury, but I don't know if it's a little 'too' alternative for me. I want to be somewhere I feel at home, and I don't know if Glastonbury will do that for me. Also it could be a coincidence, but everytime I've visited Glastonbury I have a migraine, or sore throat, or hubbie and I start arguing. I wonder if the 'vibes' there don't suit me. We'll definately be visiting Glastonbury again on our holiday, and I've got the 'over the rainbow' restaurant on my list to visit! What would be the nearest place to Glastonbury for the typical high street shops? I'm thinking of places like Woolworths, M&S, Mothercare etc. Actually I suppose that would be Street's shopping centre wouldn't it? We were also considering Cheddar, what's your honest opinion of the place. It's really hard to get people's true feelings on the internet, because obviously we all don't want to upset other people.

i visited bristol only once, on my to Glastonbury festival and that was enuf for me to know i wanted to live here.

Big Christmas Party
Now Red, Cummin and VBB, do you remember that we were talking last time we met about having a big party and that your vegan group might be interested in doing something with Bristol Vegans?
Well the plan at the moment is that we hire a community hall in Bristol and get everyone to bring food and their own plate and cutlery and have a very cheap but hopefully sucessful gathering. We could have music or some sort of entertainment. Ellen is currently looking into the venue and date.
Anyone got any ideas and/or wanna come?
