Just put some chocolate in them before you bake them, that's what we're going to do.

This thread has inspired me to look up recipes for vegan brioche. I've found 2 to try, and also a recipe for Chocolate Babka(?) where the dough can also be used to make brioche.

Off to Sainsbobs on Saturday, so will keep an eye out for the Jus-Rol croissants! Thank you for the heads-up, Risker

Jus-Rol croissants were £1 a pack in Asda

There was no one else in the house so I ate the whole lot by myself :S I don't feel so good now but it was sooo worth it.

They're good then are they vorpal? Thanks to Risker for spotting them.

There used to be some vegan croissants on sale years ago but they disappeared, so it would make sense for us to eat as many of these as humanly possible in order to keep them in the shops although perhaps not so advisable from other points of view...

Well, I got a tin(?) of the JusRol croissants, slathered on some choc spread, rolled 'em up, popped in oven, and oh...my...

Lovely lovely lovely!! Perfect, wonderful croissants! I would definitely recommend these for impressing people, especially.

Sainsbobs have them! I had to have a double-look as they're tucked in with all the other Jus Rol pastry items in the chiller section. Haven't seen them in Morrisons, and I don't have a Tesco or Asda nearby, so can't comment on them. They're in a cylindrical tin type thing.

Thanks pusskins - OH is supposed to have looked in Sainsbury's but I might go back and check. Haven't got those other supermarkets locally but there is a mega Sainsbury's down the road if all else fails.

Sorry I called you "pumpkins" in the previous message by the way - still getting hang of new phone

Finally found some of these at the mega-Sainsbury's a mile or so away; the nearest one doesn't seem to stock them.

At least the hike burned off a few calories - now to put them back

I thought they were pretty good though not quite as sort of flaky as I remember actual croissants being.

Dipped in coffee though ( well, it's traditional) they are highly acceptable.

Is that second photo a cross-section, pusskins? It seems rather more inflated than mine, perhaps I rolled them up too tight or something!

Yes it is, harpy. I think I did roll them up quite 'loosely'. Looks like you'll just have to keep trying!!

Well I ate two and left the other four... But a few days later I made a whole other batch of 6 and only left two... The croissant fairy was probably gobbling them up for my own good!!! :P

I've made them myself a lot in the past, shaped them into croissants or folded them into squares with chocolate in the middle to make pain au chocolat. They're not the flaky version that you know, but the flavour is there anyway, they're very nice.

In case anyone's interested in making these themselves here's a recipe: (recipe from the complete bread machine book, but easily made without bread maker too)
    175 g water
    150 g butter
    1 1/2 tbsp sugar
    1 1/2 tsp salt
    500 g flour
    1 tbsp yeast

Either mix on the dough setting in bread machine or mix yourself and if mixed by hand rest for at least an hour. For croissants this makes about 24 croissants. Divide into 3 pieces, roll into circle (about 25cm or 10 inches diameter and 3 mm or 1/8 inch thick) and cut into 8 triangles like you would cut a pizza. Roll into crescent shapes, starting at the wide end towards the point, stretching the dough slightly as you go. when you place it on the (greased) baking sheet pull the points towards you a bit. For glazing brush with a little bit of (non-dairy) milk. Let it rise in warm place until it's about doubled. I always preheat the oven slightly turn it off and let it rise in there. Bake for 20-25 minutes in preheated oven for 190 degrees Celcius or 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Have this message from jus-rol

"We would like to advise you that our croissant and pizza dough products may contain milk and egg ingredients, as a result we would not recommend their suitability for vegans."

This usually means that they are made in the same environment as milk/egg products so there is the theoretical chance of cross contamination.
Most Vegans would still consider these products suitable, as milk/eggs are not ingredients there is merely the chance of cross contamination.

You could try these though, they are made by probios with the ingredients listed on their site

Edit: Risker got there first, but I thought it still worth mentioning these spelt ones.

I like to add a small amount of sweet mincemeat to the jus-roll croissants before baking.
Watch out it gets hot, though.

I tried jam once, but burned the roof of my mouth so badly that I could barely eat for a week!

Just in case anyone else in S. London is after these, the Garrett Lane (Wandsworth) Sainsbury's had both the croissants and the pains au chocolat today (hurrah - not counting on it being a regular thing though, based on past performance).
