oo i thinkit's been about 6 months!! huzzah for meeeeeeeee!
vege form the age of 6 and vegan form the age of 14 so about 5 years.
I've been a vegetarian since the beginning of March of this year and a vegan since June or July. My skin looks nicer, and I lost fifteen pounds right away even though I was eating like mad. My weight eventually stabilized right where I think it's probably natural for me. It's strange; now when I see a piece of meat, I see a piece of animal. I never was able to make that connection before, no matter how hard I tried. The mind is a strange creature, I guess...
It hasn't been that difficult. I hated milk before I was ever vegan or even vegetarian -- hadn't had any plain since I was twelve and just flat out refused to continue drinking it. Yogurt made me feel queasy. So did eggs. The only dairy I have to worry about now is in baked goods and such, and seeing as I can find replacements that don't seem to alter the flavor, that's no problem.
And one last thing -- my allergies are almost completely gone. I had a sniffly nose this fall, but otherwise, they are gone. They used to be horrible all year round.
Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen.

I wish I had marked the day that I made the switch but alas I didn't. It's been about a year for me though and I must say that once I got past the initial withdrawals it's been as easy as vegan pie .
17 months now after being veggie since 6 - 26 years veggie,
Over a year, Veggie for 7 years or so...

Let's do something about it!
Veggie since '96 (i was 7), and vegan since 14th April '06 (aged 16)!
I went veggie in late '82, then vegan in late '84
and it still feels like the best decision I ever made
I've been a veggie for just over 10 years. My daughter became a vegan 5 months ago and I started 4 months ago.
I'm surprised there aren't more long term vegans. I was hoping to see more with 20+ years. I cycle a great deal, last year I road over 13,000 on my bicycle. Are there any athletic types here? How has being a vegan affected you
FYI: I'm 54 years old.
Thanks

I will not eat anything that walks, swims, flies, runs, skips, hops or crawls.

8 days vegan and 6 years vegetarian

My husband and I decided to become vegan last december after 4 years of vegetarianism. I did have some odd ethical doubts - which lots of people here might find strange - but basically i suppose I felt a bit guilty about having the choice of food when lots do not have such luxury. Anyhow we finally got over our ethical problems and i have to say that, like almost everyone here, we find that the food part of it is really easy - everything tastes fantastic, food is better than ever before and really presents no pronblems at all.
I became a vegetarian in about 2001, then vegan in 2003. I went back to being a vegetarian for about nine months between 2004 and 2005 because I was living in catered halls at university and it was extremely difficult to have vegan options. However, I've been a vegan again since 2005

I'm not sure exactly. I eased myself into a vegan diet/lifestyle gradually, but I think it's been about 18 months.
i don't want to appear soppy, but i'm sure speaking from the long time vegans 10years+, it's really reassuring/comforting that there are so many new vegans popping up `all over the place not just the 'young' but all ages.
i started when i was 22 being vege for only six months and had at least 5 other people i knew that were vegan and were near by, also the vege's i knew were numerous. as i've got older we have all gone our separate ways and now my vegan circle is at its smallest.
i began to post VP to socialize with other like minded types and now here. the polls here that show age and length of time vegan are quite enlightening, also this site seems more Europe based so the chance of meeting up on the vegan front is much more likely.
for example the lovely Redwellies housewarming party, and her most open and friendly invite to visit is most heart warming. also finding vegans who live near me and are really friendly, i hope at some point to meet up with the quite fluffy members that post here.
vegan for 6 months, veggie for a year before that
Next month I will have been vegan for one year.

1994!
context is everything
Since 1996! Blimy, seems a long time when you think about it like that!
Oct 2005 - so almost 2 years already
Silent but deadly :p
Since 1990
17 years.
..but what would they do with all the cows?..
10-13 years vegan I think. Ambiguity down to the fact that I have enough trouble working out how long I've been in a given job or lived in a particular house. I'm one of those people that has to work out how old I am if asked! I'm pretty sure I switched from being very vegetarian to fully vegan at a Glastonbury festival but I went to a few of those in my younger days, too much hassle getting tickets now so I don't bother and the folkie festivals are more my scene anyway.
I went vegetarian when I left home (17 or so years ago, yikes - where does the time go) to go to University but had never eaten much meat anyway so it was pretty easy.
Very happy with being vegan, feel healthy and glad to be minimising the suffering and environmental impact of my life.
Went veggie in '93, and then vegan at some point in '94 - it was a bit of a gradual thing, not from one day to the other, but I think I had it nailed within a few weeks. Never looked back since
please grant me the senility to forget about people I never liked anyway
Since April 2005. So much happier now.
Been a vegan for just over a year now!!!
And lovin it!!!!!!
It'll be 7 years in a week or so... must celebrate somehow (chocolate involved I think)
vegetarian for, er, about 10 (?) years previously
I've lived more years meatless than I did meaty, for some trivial reason that makes me quite happy

I've been vegan for 7 1/2 months...I can't believe its been that long even I was vegetarian for about two years before.

2 months and I feel great!
it's been 9 years now for me
Since 2005. had my 2 year "veganiversary" early October
Nearly two years, in January.
There’s a statue that the abattoir erected to remind us all of their contributions. To me it marks Potemkin City Limits, this Francis cast in bronze.
Nearly 19 years and vegetarian for about 4 years before that. I must remember to have a big 20 yr celebration next year!!!!!!!!!
Salty! This is so amazing you've been vegan for so long! I really admire you and can't wait until I can have a 20 year celebration. How did you become vegan?

Just about 4 years now! It was January 2004 when I became a vegan - but I can't remember the specific date.
Hi ellaminnowpea, I became vegetarian at the age of 12 because I didn't feel right eating animals when I liked them so much. I joined the vegetarian society who sent magazines with information about intensive egg/dairy farming....and just couldn't be a part of it. At 16 I became vegan and it's a whole way of life. I think if you are vegetarian because you can't bear so see suffering, then it's even more natural to become vegan.
I have never known any other vegans and have continually had to defend/ explain my beliefs (I live in an area strong in farming ). So it's such a breath of fresh air to join this site, hooray!!
2 weeks today. I was veggie for 3 years as a teenager and really regret having given that up. Going vegan wasn't "planned" - I just had the thought, spent 2 days researching it (eating veggie again those 2 days) and did it! Best decision I've made for a long time
It's a year this month for me, although it's still even now and on-going progress with things like household products.
I wish i knew the exact date so i could have a party! heh heh

Started a vegetarian diet about 4 or 5 years ago, and have been vegan for just about 2 now.
1 year today!!! Hip hip hooray! I thought turning vegan would be so hard but its really been so easy (would have been easier still if I was any good at cooking! lol)
Then happy birthday-sort-of-type-thing-day, Linxie!
Michael.
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find me...
June 24, 2008 will be 12 years vegan! I went vegan overnight after attending a Washington DC Animal Rights conference and March for the Animals in 1996. I was already vegetarian but, at the time, didn't understand the need to be vegan. Still, all the speakers urged us to go vegan and I greatly respected them and figured they knew something I didn't know. So, I pledged to go vegan and sought out the information later. My biggest concern at the time was what to substitute for cream in my coffee. I'm not sure soymilk or creamer was readily available back then, or very good. Had I known what lay ahead of me, I would have realized the biggest hurdle is the social one.
Last month I have been vegan for 1 year!!! its odd too because I am probably the happiest I have ever been in my life...I think being vegan has helped contrbute to this...
