Congrats Miss Bettie and Huddy, I will celebrate my 2 year anniversary in August too!
I became a vegan at the end of 1994; hence I've been vegan for 14 years - I've enjoyed those vegan years. I was a vegetarian for 3 years before that.
Animals are not food, they are our friends.
It was late June or early July 2006 for me. I didn't really see the point in keeping the exact date. I was only vegetarian for about a week before that.
Until we stop harming all other living beings, We are still savages.
I don't have a frame of reference for when I became vegan. About 18 years ago.
For those of you have been vegan a long time, how do you remember when you became vegan? What I mean what association do you have with it? Like a wedding, or world cup or similar.
I've got such a crap memory .. .especially for time lines.
I really can't recall either. But from some literature I found it looks like I went vegan around 15 years ago (I found my order for handmade vegan shoes but I didn't get rid of all my leather shoes straight away, so I still don't really know exactly when I went vegan).

It looks like this poll needs updating again, to include a 2009 option.
I remember the day I decided to go vegan like it was yesterday, and that was in 1994. 15 years now?
It was a late spring day, and I was walking down from Liberty on Fifth Ave in Ann Arbor MI, towards "Jerusalem Gardens", and I decided in two steps that my reasoning for being an omnivore just didn't cut it. So I went in, ordered a falafel with hummus sandwich, and ate it outside. That was my first vegan meal, and I've not stopped since.
context is everything
I went vegan in the summer of 2005.
It is my two year vegan anniversary today. Helen remembered when we saw this thread. It is hers tomorrow. My first vegan meal was sizzling vegetable fajitas from Garfunkel's, without the cheese and sour cream. I went vegan after attending a talk about milk at the Incredible Veggie show and have had no regrets since.
I've been vegan for just over 6 years now, and was vegetarian for 14 years before that (14 years of omni before that, but that was from age 0 to 14).
Feel much healthier and happier since turning vegan!
I've been vegan for 4 years 2 months and 2 days as I remember it was the very start of the 10th of September 2005 when I went vegan (00:00:01 lol). I also remember when I went vegetarian as it was my 15th birthday so that would mean I was vegetarian for 1 year, 3 months, 2 weeks and 5 days before going vegan (I think) so I haven't eaten meat for over 1/4 of my life . I'm already planning on what to do for my 5 year vegan celebration as being vegan is such a big part of my life.
I do get upset that I even ate animals and animal products in the past, however as every day goes by I remember about how many animals that are not needed in that system because I stood back and said 'no, I'm not going to be a part of this any more'.

I just had my 3 year anniversary on Halloween.
Why Halloween? Is there a story?
It will be 5 years for me on New Years.
I always forget to celebrate it though.

Not really, I had been trying to lose weight for my wedding by cutting down on cheese and found it much easier than I had thought and I had always wanted to try veganism. I think I had done some meditation that day for Halloween/ Samhain and I felt like it was a good time to start something new. So I looked online for some information and I was like this when I read the truth about dairy production so I went vegan. (Maybe there was a story after all!)
Why was your date on the New Year? Is there a story?
funny.

I was vegetarian for two years before i decided to be vegan which i have been for four years now. I'm glad i made the change
I went vegetarian in September 08 to test the water as my intention was to eventually become vegan. I did that one month later.
I will be vegan 4 years at Christmas time!
I like Sandra, she keeps making me giggle. Daft little lady - Frosty
In February I'll have been vegan for 9 years. I don't recall the exact day though.
I've been vegan for exactly 11 days now! Yay!
I was vegetarian for about 10 months before that.
I'm NEVER going back to eating meat/dairy.
Only since June 2007 I'm afraid, I was vegetarian for the preceding twenty years.
From Sutton, Surrey, (or Greater London when they want to fleece me for the Olympics)
was never vegitarian. went from meat based diet to Vegan overnight. literaly.
never been happier! thank you veganism!!
1 year, 4 months and 21 days.
2005 ...round abouts.
I was an on-off vegetarian throughout my childhood, simply cos I didn't really like meat and often refused to eat it. Became a 'proper' vegetarian at the start of 2009 and made the switch to vegan on November 13 2009
I hate it when I'm studying and a velociraptor throws bananas on me.
My second "anniversary" is on the 28th. Woot!

3 weeks. hehe! =)
I've been vegan for about 6 months and I love it!
oops
i think i became a real vegan in 2002, so that's over 7 seven years. if i ever become a father, my child or children will be raised vegan, guaranteed.
10 years!!

21 years, just before DD was born. She's been brought up vegan from birth and her big brother became vegan when he was three, at the same time as his dad and me.
I was vegetarian for 19 years beforehand, so it's good that the vegan years exceed the vegetarian ones now!
A month and a bit... 5 or 6 weeks-ish.
I am a baby vegan! 3 months here! I am still learning new things everyday
Been vegan for about 5 years now, was vegetarian for about 5 years before that. Becoming vegan was honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made.

zomg vegan for nearly a year, time really flies...
I gradually become vegan since last year so glad I'm a vegan now and so glad I found this forum!
4 months but this is my fifth month already.
I'm a bit of a newbie compared to most of you, been vegan for almost 3 months.
Damn, it's gotta be five years now or at least close to it.
It's true; ask anyone who agrees with me.
I was a vegetarian for 4 years, then became a vegan about a month and a half ago. I feel so much better and happier now.
Was vegetarian for almost 9 years, went vegan a bit more than 3 months ago. I've lost the last 10 pounds of weight I was struggling with without even trying, I feel better, and I no longer get acne. Before seeing Earthlings, I didn't think I'd ever be able to give up cheese, but the truth is it was incredibly easy to do after viewing this documentary (I knew I couldn't be part of this exploitation anymore), and cheese no longer appeals to me.
That's basically the same story for me. Vegetarian for four years, vegan for two months.
Same here. I never really planned on being a vegan at first. But early on in my vegetarianism, I tried to avoid all animal products just to see how it would go. I concluded that being vegan was much harder because there were more ingredients to look out for, and they were in everything! It made being vegetarian look so easy.
The truth is, I just didn't put very much energy into it. I didn't think milk and eggs were as bad as meat. But I did plan on eventually being vegan, like after college. I just didn't think there was any rush, and I also thought it would be easier when I was buying and preparing much of my own food. I was just making excuses.
I could have easily been vegan before now, and even if it wasn't easy, it's the right thing to do. Luckily I didn't wait as long as I planned to. I still have two more years of college to show people how fun and healthy vegans can be!
Exactly, Gorilla! You put into words what I hadn't yet. I might consider making that my signature or something. Is that weird?
