Their lemon and corriander houmous is very good.feral
San Amvrosia houmous is my favourite. It's really smooth and creamy. I'm too lazy to make my own!

I have no way to get hold of any tahini, what else could I use to replace it as a hummus ingredient?

can you get sesame seeds? if you can, you should be able to make your own tahini. you'd need a really good grinder, though, as the seeds are so small. it's something like 1/3 cup oil per 4 cups of seeds, but that sounds like a lot of tahini!!!

oh, and tahini is not truly necessary in hummus. i've got one recipe that doesn't call for it... however it is downstairs and the little girl and i are upstairs. i'll look for it and post it later

oh, thanx moonshadow! it would be great if you could post that recipe!
i've tried making hummus by just leaving out the tahini, but it's just never come out perfectly, so i was wondering wheter the tahini was the reason...
good idea grinding the sesame seeds though...i don't have a grinder, but i could look into that idea

tahini-less hummus (from the native foods restaurant cookbook by tanya petrovna):
harry's hummus
'this recipe is a greek-style hummu, shich doesn't include tahini. this gives it a lighter essence'
1 cup cooked garbanzo beans (chick peas)
1/4 cup cooking liquid from the beans
2 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 tsp sea salt
puree all ingredients in a blender until smooth. it may be neccesary to add more cooking liquid or water to create a smooth texture.
variation-- add 2 tbsp raw or roasted tahini

thank you so much moonshadow! i'll try that out, definitely!

in "how it all vegan" there is a recipe for easy hummus using peanut butter. I have tried using peanut butter and it is alright but I think almond butter would be better. I think you can use anything with fat, as you see at the begining of this thread I use salad dressing.
it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble
