There's an animal rights group called Sheffield Animal Friends: http://www.myspace.com/sheffieldaf . I'm not involved with them so don't know any details but it looks like they do quite a lot of stuff.

Hi, I have personally enjoyed the food at Sheffield's Felicinis Restaurant, both before and after turning Vegan. I've just dicovered they actually have a vegan menu too which appears to be adapted items from the main menu and although most seem to be 'X' minus 'Z' at the same price (!) some have different additons such as the dough balls with garlic butter which have an aubergine dip on the vegan menu.

Worth a try if you eat out with meat eaters and need a place suitable for all. I've been twice now for 2 seperate birthday meals and was relieved to discover that I didn't need to order a green salad and portion of potatoes like I did at another Italian restaurant in Sheffield not so long ago..... Apparently they couldnt' do a pizza without cheese even tho the base was fine cos it wouldn't 'hold right'?! and they couldn't possibly consider cooking a risotto without butter/cheese.....etc etc.......

    Anyway http://www.felicini.co.uk/menu.asp?menuID=1

I can copy the vegan menu I have on e-mail if any one lives locally and is interested

Hi, I would have made a new thread for this but I seem to be blocked from starting new ones Anyway...........

FREE Vegan Food Fayre in Sheffield - Sat 5th Dec- 11am- 3pm

The Quaker Meeting House (near the Cathedral), 10 St James Street, Sheffield S1 2EW.

The event will be a chance to sample a variety of delicious, cruelty-free food as well as an opportunity to check out stalls from animal charities/ethical businesses/campaigning organisations and help support their work. Organised by Sheffield Animal Friends with the support of Animal Aid, the day will be a great chance to meet and socialise with other vegans from Sheffield and the surrounding area. Also if you know of any potential vegan converts that live in these parts, please let them know about this event!

    Cheers

Hi genisis, that's a shame you read my post to late and couldn't come Not to rub it in but if you'd like to see what it was like please go to www.myspace.com/sheffieldaf and click on the 'view my pics' under the main photo on the top left. It was a real success, lots of people came and we got a lot of positive responses about the food and great atmosphere! Out of all the questionaires that we got back only two of the respondents said visiting would have no affect on their diets, all the others would reduce meat intake, go veggie or go vegan.

If you'd like to be kept up to date with Sheffield Animal Friends activities you can check the myspace or if you'd like to be added to our mailout list please contact me or email sheffieldanimalfriends@gmail.com. We aim to make the food fayre an annual event and hope it will grow and get bigger each time, who knows you might be helping us with it next year!

    Hello Sheffield friends...

I'm going on a course in Sheffield in May - where would you recommend me to take my three (omni) colleagues for a nice dinner the night before? Is Kumquat Mae still the talk of the town?

    Cheers for any info, m'dears.

    Hi Ruby Rose
there are loads of places in town center you could go,plenty of chinese buffet's that do good veggy options also nando's (if you can cope with all the dead chickens everyone else eating ) their veg burger is vegan if you ask for no mayo on it and the Fat Cat pub do at least one vegan meal on their menu

Sheffield isn't great for vegan food, but the Blue Moon is pretty good. It's a vegetarian cafe by the Cathedral, in a nice building and open til 8 (I think).

In the city centre there's also East One Noodle Bar, Las Iguanas, Pizza Express, Sheiks (Lebanese - Glossop Road), Showroom (cafe bar attached to the Showroom cinema), Wagamama, Butler's balti house (Broad Lane, nr the University). There's a veg*n/fish restaurant called The Bohemian a bit further out. If your course is at the university (of Sheffield) the Interval bar in the students' union has vegan options and is quite a nice place for a meal. Apart from the Blue Moon cafe there isn't much that's exclusively vegetarian, but not hard to find omni restaurants with vegan options.

Wow! Loads of choice! Thanks, derwenna. I love Lebanese food, so I'll check that out first - and we're going to be at the Hilton hotel, so Glossop Road is (I think) quite handy.

A mention to Gyaltsabje Buddhist centre at Hunters Bar, the cafe is called world peace cafe and has only veggie and vegan meals, no meat. And Heeley city farm has a new, improved, all veggie cafe at Richards rd, tel 0114 258 0244.
The farm cafe is very good and very cheap for eating out these days

I intended going but unfortunately had to transport Mrs Lv to and from work that day. Had the pleasure of going to a couple of Sheffield Vegans meetings some years ago and they were a brilliant crowd. I presume that the Sheffield Animal Friends will have a lot of the same people.

Shame about the Blue Moon. I hope they intend selling it to other veggies or it will go the same way as Kumquat Mae and The Olive Garden. Best (vegan) meal of my life was at Kumquat Mae around 5 years ago.

I went to blue moon today, i had a sheff pasty and a cup of tea n a cake. The server actually chopped in half an average sized piece of cake and gave it to me , it was only worth one portion...it knocked me back around 8 quid in total..the dopey looking bloke serving me my pasty actually had the brass neck to ask me if he can "give you a penny less change"as they were out of 1p bits.Absolutely disgusting.

Thanks genisis. Yes , indeed the restaurant as a whole is spoilt by the attitudes of one or two staff, who show contempt for the customers.
    Oh ..and its exorbitant..
And the guy in question is always soo lackadaisacal.
He gave me cow juice yestaday instead of soya milk..tut tut.....
I remedied that and so then i had a newbie who decided to thwart my desire for a nice bit o choc cake by chopping it in two.
As for vegan Sheffield, i prefer the omni Pho 68 on London road.Vegan tofu salt n pepper starter for 3 quid..beats blue moon anyday....despite it being omni not veggie, this pho 68.

I've been going to New Roots veg*an cafe/shop at lunchtime for a few weeks. It's at the top end of Spital Hill opposite the library and is open Mon-Fri 11:30-3.30. The shop sells a variety of veg*n goods and in the cafe, there are a selection of vegan pasties, snacks, cakes etc. The all day vegan breakfast consisting of 2 sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, toast and either coffee or tea, costs £2:50! All the people working at the cafe/shop are volunteers and their primary aim is "to help promote a fairer, more caring and more sustainable world". They had an "all you could eat meal" last Monday evening and raised £285 to go to the famine in East Africa.

Here is a link. which tells you a bit about their philosophy.

Blue moon sell reasonable tasting healthy food, and today the mains were a bit sweet and mainly due to the abundance of sweet spud and tomato in there.
Its still very expensive in my view too.
A minute bit of cake for 2 quid 20.
Now for 1st time, one cake aint vegan any more.
    Odd......most still vegan though.

    But I was there today.

I'll probably be there on a couple of weekdays each week so please say hello if you think it's me. (Mid-60s, balding, stubbly, male etc invariably eating an all-day vegan breakfast.)

I have a problem with Blue Moon too but I don't really know why, which is a bit unfair to those that run it,it just seems to have a funny atmosphere,I stopped going there a few years back after I had sat down with my 2 daughters, had the buggy pushed up to the table so it was as much out of the way as it could be,the cafe was empty except for us then this mean lady came in,decided she had to get past where the buggy was and started having a massive go at me for having the buggy there!!
It really upset me and it just seemed to sum the place up that it has this "peaceful" ethos but really it doesn't have the atmosphere to back that up.

Anyway,New Roots sounds nice, I will have to pay it a visit!

Great food at decent prices, 1.50 for a jacket tatty with soya marge.
Really worth it, the veg is organic and grown on site.

I really must try there, and also Airy Fairy. Thing is that Mum's care-home is just 2 mins up the road from the £2.50 all day vegan breakfast at New Roots. I'll have to drive over earlier one day...

Airy fairy is not great as far as food goes, me n my OH go there for a cuppa often yet they have such a poor menu, so limited, but anyway, worth a visit for the laid back ambience n smell of incense etc.

Yes, lovely surroundings just opposite Endcliffe Park, Buddhist centre with a delightful peaceful feel to it.
Reasonable food, somewhat overpriced for what you get.
Deffo better than airy fairy, which suffers from an air of ok yah middle class new age snobbery , and as for the vegan options, what vegan options?
Really depends who`s on that day..i mean one day my wife n i, saw an employee at airy fairy on a mobile to someone.
That sweet little cat was nosing about, she yelled i f...ing hat cats to which the caller said kick it...she didn`t, but it was a truly wretched reflection on airy fairy.
    :D :)
