    Default Vegan DIY

I am in the process of renovating a victorian cottage (probably will be for the next 10years at this rate )

    There are two questions really-

Should i bother? i have planning permission to demolish and build two new properties. Would this be better for the environment? my house is cold + drafty etc..it consumes a lot of energy and is nowhere near modern insulation standards. I could build two eco houses? am i just being nostalgic in renovating this one?

The second point is vegan diy products. i use ecos paints which are vegan but trying to find out about other stuff is a nightmare. I was using tile adhesive today i reckon it's the kind of thing that may have gelatine in? but i just don't know??

interested in your comments and any DIY advice. volunteers are also welcome

According to Quakergreenaction, about 50,000kg of CO2 providing materials to build a typical family house. And a skip of building waste causes 1000kg of CO2.

So your alternative plans of building 2 houses makes 100,000kg plua however many skips it takes to carry the cottage away x 1000kg.

I suspect that in CO2 terms at least its better for the environment to renovate.

I'd not really considered the CO2 cost. It would be very difficult to compare that to the extra energy i am using plus all the new products i buy and waste i produce carrying out renovations.

I thought i'd post a couple of pics so you can see why i love the place and waht a state it's in -

Looks a nice place. Ok If you are going to build two houses, that is a big project, which requires careful planning and good cash flow.

    Check out this book:

    link

If I remember rightly the first chapter, says to avoid eco-builds as a first build.

    cheers , will do.

I don't really want to get rid of the house, i love it and have about 1/4 acre to grow veggies. But after labouring all weekend, spending a fortune and creating a bag of rubbish just from the packaging of the stuff i'd bought the questions began crossing my mind.

    it's so charming- keep it.
i have an old house and it is a pain to keep up but there is something about it that you don't get with new homes (a warm fuzzy feeling )

also- your house probably fits in with the local landscape and your gardens. a new home may stick out (and not in a good way)

I also want to build my own place eventually, but will probably be another 5 years at least.

A self-built eco-house is a great dream to work for

Thanks for the list of references, i'll have a look through them.

I would love to build my own place but i have a soft spot for old properties. Having an old cottage is fantastic, not practicle or env. friendly, but fantastic nevertheless.

i haven't the cash to build from scratch so will probably continue with my labour of love. Need a vegan lodger really to help with the cash.

vbb, i think there is something special about that house. i dont know if you believe in this sort of stuff or not, but i got really good feelings from it

i think you and that house are just meant to be together! what better reward could you get than to renovate a house you love. one day youll step back and see everything done and feel such happiness. i dont know if you would have such a soft spot for 2 new homes.

if it were me, i would renovate.

What a fantastic place. I'd renovate for sure, but as I know absolutely nothing about DIY I wouldn't know where to start!

Have you seen the 'It's Not Easy Being Green' programme on BBC2 about a family who are converting an old house to be eco-friendly? It's on tonight (Tuesday) at 8.30.

As for building your own property, this place is my ideal.

I'm in the process of buying a 1850s victorian terrace with another member of this forum which doesn't need an awful lot of work doing to be inhabitable but does have a fantastic cellar (full length of the house with skylights in both ends (boarded up but there)) that we want to convert when finances permit. It's also got a convertable loft, but would probably exceed the ceiling price of the road if we did both.

Have you (veganbikerboy) or anyone else used ecospaints? I came across them last night (then remembered this thread) and am going to send away for a sample. They seem top do a lot more besides just paint which is good and at a very quick first glance they appear to be reasonably well priced.

Any other things you've found useful to UK renovaters? I know roughly about builing things, but never tried buying vegan friendly ones.

    yes i use ecos paints

expensive but very very good, all the gloss and emulsion (in the decorated bit) in my place is from Ecos. Also they provide good customer service.

Also externally i used their rain guard (can't remember what they call theirs) on the whole of the brickwork. The two gable ends are done in their masonary paint and the cast iron guttering is done in their metal paint.

The only one i have had a minor problem with is the floor paint, which seems to wear off very quick, but popular opinion is that i am too tight with the paint and should paint it on thicker (you have to be careful with the price you pay for it )

no i hadnt heard of these guys, so cheers for the link, not had chance to look properly yet. Do they deliver nationally?? and i wonder if the impact of ordering stuff from london out weighs benefits of using conventional insulations bought at a local merchants

No idea but I seem to recall they are more of an info / showroom / raising awareness type of place. Perhaps they can point you towards the manufacturers who could deliver direct (you may find they do that in any case if you order something).

Ah, just had a look, they do deliver nationally - this is from the website:-
Our converted factory building includes 3 floors of display, a seminar room, a training and demonstration room, a warehouse with trade counter, and advice counters staffed by specialists in each product area. Our services are mainly directed towards the building trades, architects, engineers and other professionals, but the building is also open to the general public. All the products on display are available for sale from our centre and we deliver all over the UK. Some items, such as paints and finishes, insulation materials, rainwater filters, brushes and tools, and books and magazines on sustainable building, can be taken away the same day: other products may need to be ordered and require a couple of weeks for delivery.

Surely travel costs couldn't outweigh the environmental damage of producing, and at some point in the future throwing away, conventional insulation products? Plus you have to handle them and then have them in your house so there are personal health implications too.

Best of luck with this mate, whatever you decide.

Its riled me now for a long time, with all the hot air that the government spout about cutting down on emissions and damage to the ozone layer, why do they not insist that every new home bulit in this country is eco friendly, solar panels built in the roofs at the very least, they just seem to give the go ahead time and time again to build cheap housing that probably wont be there in 50 years time. ??

Wow! I saw the documentary on that build a few years ago (before we threw away the t.v). That is an amazing community!!! I often wondered what happened to all of them - if they are still living there, how they are getting on. Any chance of an update?

Yes, we're all still here just getting on with our lives without having to worry about being chucked out at any time or having to give over a huge portion of our weekly wage to rent. Well worth it. I can't believe that it's considered "ineffective" these days. Morons.
Me and the kid love it here and will probably never move. She can take over the tenancy when I die too, which is nice.
It is quiet, peaceful and safe. We are trying to grow more food too which helps me since I took a vow against imported fruit and veg..

I'm planning to use Isonat for in-wall insulation. It is a mix of hemp and recycled cotton. I spoke to the company linked below who also sell wool insulation and they said the thermal insulation is about the same but the hemp is better for sound proofing.

If you are renovating be sure you know how to identify and deal with asbestos.
If you break up a wall, floor or ceiling with it in you could put your health in grave danger.
In fact if you have to remove asbestos the law here says you can't do it yourself unless you have a licence.
I have just recently had some removed from my home (which is getting on for 100 years old) and the contractor wore a sealed full body and head protector and special breathing equipment and there was a special air lock asbestos treatment van to put it in.
    http://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/regulations.htm
    for uk asbestos regulations.
IMO renovating is always going to be more vegan friendly and environmentally friendly than new build, unfortunately some homes are in such a bad state that they can't be renovated but this is usually because they were poorly built, or were neglected.

I hope he was as careful with the air he left you to breate as with his own clean air supply!

We had to have three rooms sealed off and specially cleaned due to asbestos. They had a special tardis like booth to enter the sealed areas where they put on special clothes, masks etc and decontaminate themselves as they came out. They coul only properly clean hard surfaces so all our carpets, curtains, anything soft was removed and disposed of. It cost a fortune for the cleaning and the replacement of our stuff.

Thanks, it was in my bathroom too. I live in a housing association and they arranged it all, they kindly did not inform me of where the asbestos was. The asbestos contractor had been told it was probably in the floor tiles but he decided it wasn't so he left them to the people who were going to re-lay the floor. It was in the boxing in of the soil pipe which ran down the whole of the house so he had to do all 3 flats in my side of the house at the same time to deal with any asbesto which could fall down the hole he made in the masonry! It was also in the toilet cistern. We had an asbestos survey done a couple of years back but the housing association have not given me a copy of the result. I am planning on writing to them about it. As we tenants are contractually responsible for the internal decorating I think they should give us all copies.

the law is funny, as it is a domestic property there is no legal requirement to let you know the location of any asbestos within the property. However, the grey area occurs when the housing association instruct their employees to undertake works within the property; the property effectively becomes their place of work. The housing association has a duty of care to its employees, hence you have been surveyed and removal commisioned. But it may be council policy that this information is not released to tennants, which they are entitled to do.

seeing I started this thread talking about my house, thought i would post these pics here. Two piccies taken 30-40yrs apart. I would say sorry about the size, but i'm not sorry i think they needed to be big!

This is my house and garden taken last summer (before i had the work on the chimney done )

this is a similar angle taken in the late 60's (I think).

Notice the addition of a new bungalow built on the land formally belonging to my place. Also the scrub land in the foreground is now 3 bungalows. but as a positive look at the difference in size of the oak trees, an indication of the time lapse. I love the original windows in the building and will eventually go back to timber framed windows of that type

also notice how all three properties in the picture have veg plots, I know for a fact i am the only one out of the 4 properties that does any real growing for myself.

They are lovely photos VBB, I love seeing how things used to look in years gone by compared to modern day. You have a wonderful house set in beautiful surroundings!

Lovely to have an old pic to compare it with. I agree about the windows, I hope you do manage to put something similar back . . . when you get round to it!

I'm impressed with your ability to take photographs whilst jumping

I found a B&W picture in the local records office of our street taken sometime in the past before cars. I too prefer the original windows our house had (sash), which about 50% of those on the street still have. We've wooden fake sash windows now, which need work doing on them, though replacing with sash is probably out of budget. There were more trees when the picture was taken, the street lights were more ornate and the houses had railings outside them (pre war i guess?). That said, it's still our favourite street in the town

You can modernize your house cheaper than you can build two new ones. Plus think of all the history your house will hold once you've completed it. I am a big fan of renovation. During my summer breaks since my freshman year of high school... i have been working with a family that renovates housing in our community. The town i live in is the oldest town in our state, and i have found a lot of interesting things while renovating.

My dream home is a renovated craftsman.

Lovely! Can you make it a feature? I saw a programme where they said it was quite common to find wells around old houses. In the programme they had it investigated to see if it was structurally safe, then filled it in.
