I maybe wrong, but don't ALL the Pure ranges of marg have palm oil in them- palm oil - a major threat to rainforests as they are chopped down to grow palm oil? Or are some palm oils grown in environmentally friendlier ways , either way I much prefer the M&S one anyway lol.

Good question, the palm oil comes from peru I believe so it may or may not be threatening rainforests depending on what part of the country it comes from.

    Unhappy Sainsburys free from spread

Sorry if this is else where...

I know a few of us in the uk use this as for me it's so much better than Pure. But and big but... the company that made it have gone bankrupt, so it's no longer available. I have spoken to the customer care line 0800636262 and they at the mo can't find another supplier. Have had a bit of a moan that this was probably the best alternative to those of us that wish to avoid dairy and was told that it may be at least a year before we get it or similar back, I then went on to explain that there were very few reasons to visit a large supermarket and could they get it back sooner......etc.
So if any of you feel that you could also have a moan then they may realise there are alot of us out here and we want the alternatives.
I can't eat pure tastes like cack to me, so thats it no toast for breaky
    Cheers to any that try....

What about Suma spread, have you tried that? Can't believe you don't like Pure, have you tried both the Soya (Green tub) and Sunflower (Blue tub) products?

i like suma organic sunflower spread, but our healthfood store goes back and forth on stocking it currently they stock vitaquell which we like better than pure. i'll go with it or suma over pure any day. (but will use pure if it's all that's available!)

as for price, we tend to pay around £1.59 for a 500g (i think that's the size!) tub of either suma or vitaquell.

the m&s one is my favorite its yummy & creamy. but i mostly buy 'pure' cos i can get it from everywhere! i have to go up a hill to get to m&S :P

in my local healthfood establishment, they sell suma. its about £1.50. i havent tried it..but its a small name brand, and i'd like to support that but i dunno what it tastes like. might try that one day.

    edit:
it might not actually be a small name, lol..i just assumed it was cos its less well-known than pure.

i know some people on here like the Sainsburys Free From margarine; do they still make it? in my local Sainsburys the other day there was a sign on the shelf saying they would no longer be stocking it - and that people should buy Pure instead!

Sainbury's supplier no longer make it, they are investigating an alternative but are suggesting people buy the more superior pure in the meantime.

Has anyone checked into the vitamins in the M&S margarine?

My housemate bought the Sainsbury's organic olive oil spread, which, despite not having milk listed in the ingredients or allergens is only marked vegetarian, not vegan. I would imagine it's because it also lists added vitamins. Isn't vitamin D (one of the additives) sometimes derived from sheeps wool?

I'd be surprised if it was palm oil free. It may just be that it is listed as vegetable oil, rather than palm oil.

So does anyone know if the M&S dairy free marge is actually vegan? Or do you not really care about vitamins because it's such a small proportion of the final product?

i buy Pure anyway, i was just interested to see that Sainsburys were actually recommending Pure over their own (albeit discontinued) product. i think i tried the Sainsburys one once and if i remember correctly it tasted a bit weird to me.

the palm oil in Pure is a concern but i don't use that much margarine (mainly because i don't eat bread very often), and as Pob says palm oil can just be listed as vegetable oil so it's hard to tell without contacting the manufacturers. i might email Pure about the palm oil as i have emailed them before and they were helpful (i was asking about them making their packaging more eco-friendly; they said they can't change it at the moment).

Well, I got 3 lots of the M&S dairy free spread today, that should last a while and Twinkle, the vit d in the spread is vit d2, which is vegan, so no need to worry about that.

i dont think we get earth balance in scotland..i've never seen it anyway. lots of people talk about it on here as being great.

hmmm. i have a new concern. well..you know how i was saying that the m&s dairy-free spread doesnt contain palm oil & that was the reason i bought it in the first place? well..i looked on the small tub i have in the fridge to see what it did contain. and it says "palm oil" !!!???

i'm confused..cos i am not the only person who thought it didnt contain palm oil. other people on here have said it too. so all the marge i can buy contains palm oil! i havent seen another brand of vegan spread without palm oil.

    *sigh*

Yes, that is a problem isn't it, there is always something to worry about isn't there, why can't life be simple? I think I'm starting to get OCD, I'm constantly checking ingredients and even things that I know are vegan, I check again if I haven't bought them in a while. I know the environmental side is important but I worry more about animal ingredients in a product, that's enough to keep me occupied for the meantime!

hehe yeah, i'm like that too. i do it all the time. but its become 2nd-nature to me now, so thats why i've moved onto question the environmental side of things.

and yes..why cant life be simple? suppose it would get boring though, eh?

    Hi all,

Does anyone know of a vegan block margarine available in the UK? I made a tray of chocolate rice krispie cakes today, using the organic Pure, and although they were yum, they didn't set as firmly as I'd have liked, and bits tend to fall off, even after hours in the fridge. Also I want to make vegan marshmallow ones, I've ordered two bags of the marshmallows recently on separate occasions, hoping to find block marg to use, but ended up eating them as they come (well, what else was I supposed to do with them?! ) when I couldn't find any.

I don't feel very hopeful, but just thought I'd ask anyway. Or, failing that, does anyone have any ideas on something else I could add to help them set firm??

Chocolate Rice Crispy Squares from How It All Vegan cookbook. Sorry, it uses the North American measuring system...

1 cup dry sweetener (like sugar)
    1 cup corn syrup
    1 cup peanut butter
    6 cups rice crispies
    2 cups chocolate chips

In a small saucepan on medium heat, mix together the sweetener and corn syrup until hot and bubbly. Remove from heat and add the nut butter, stirring together until well mixed. In a large bowl, add the rice crispies and chips. Stir in the nut butter mixture and mix together well (use your hands!). Pour mixture into a 9x13 inch pan, press flat, and let cool for 1 hour before cutting.
    Peace, love, and happiness.

Well, I don't exactly know what you mean - but it's a spreadable margarine in a tub, somewhat like Becel, but without the yellowness.

however, they're made by a unilever branch company. And some sources say they use vitamin d3 which isn't vegan.

are there any definite alternatives you can use?

There are definite alternatives - one of the health food stores in my area carries Earth Balance, but I don't get to go in there much because the hours suck. I'll make it in soon.

I have posted a thread of its one, but then I saw this thread, Pure have stopped making the Organic Version of their spread which was defiently the best tasting. Please can people contact Kerry Foods to request they start making it again.

    Default Becel vegan margarine

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Becel brought out a vegan margarine. I tried it for the first time today and it's very good. Still on the more expensive side but a bit cheaper than Earth Balance. In my humble opinion it tastes better. While I think I'd rather support Earth Balance it's not available close to where I live and I have to make a special trip about 25 miles to get it Becel is available at a more local market. They clearly marked it vegan though it look as thought they are looking to market it to the Gluten free/lactose free crowd. Still the ingredient's seem to check out. What do you all think? I realize it's just a tub of margarine but does one support a company that clearly exploits animals or praise them for taking a step in the right direction?
