Default vegan soy cheese at the vic market

I bought a vegan soy cheese from the Queen Victoria market this week and the vendor assured me there were no animal products in it.

    It is delicious.

Has anyone else purchased this cheese? It has a long Italian sounding name starting with N.

They also had a vegan fetta cheese, but I haven't tried this.

    Hey Treehugga hows things

Vegan cheese, all the vegan cheese I ever had was pretty 'orrible. I had some today to make sure and it was crap, but fun all the same.

Was that cheese called Narnargoon, or is that something barry humphries used to say?

Do the people at the market make it or do they buy it in. Anyway what you doing down there in the big city?

Hey cheeky guy. How're you doin?

Yes I rarely travel 2 hours via train to melb but I was on holiday so I thought I'd have a treat.

I don't think the cheese was called Narnagoon It sounded foreign and yes I should have written it down but it was crowded and I was rushing.

I imagine it is imported and it sounded Italian.

I will see if someone closer to Melb like Stmpy or Sticky date can check it out further for us.

It is really tasty, but doesn't melt well. I just hope it is authentic. I still have issues trusting people around that.

    Cheers

    hugs

Stmpy if you go in the entrance at Elizabeth St into the deli shed, walk around towards the organic veg section and it is the cheese deli on the left hand side at the second doorway (I think). It is opposite the tofu deli.
The cheese I got was next to Nimbin cheese and has a long Italian name starting with N and the deli girl told me it has no dairy including casein or rennet, but I would like more info really to make sure. It would be good to check with the company. It is nicer than any other soy cheese or product I have tried so it would be worth checking. It softens a bit during cooking but doesn't really melt, but it does have a nice flavour.

We're all good thanks and say gidday to your partner for me.

Yes I am suspicious and to be honest have only consumed a little of the cheese just in case.

Once we know who makes it it will be easier to check.

It tastes really nice so it would be good if it were true and I don't think anyone would know the difference.

Ta, treehugger. Next time I go to Vic Market I will take the directions of this post with me and report back.

I don't fancy the sound of cheese mentioned made from vegetable fat though I wonder if its the same one as Stickydate mentioned.

It was the one she mentioned lovey, but she said people couldn't tell so it must have been ok.

I have tired of waiting for you Melbourne mob to check out the cheese, so I am treking down to good ol Melbourne town to Queen Vic to check out and probably buy more of the cheese. Will make sure I get the name of it this time. I may also buy some vegan fetta. I am going on Thursday.

Yes and I've tried most of them. This cheese had an Italian sounding name and was similar to what I remember cheese being like and I was assured it was vegan, but I am a little suspicious. Anyway this time I will write the name down and check with the manufacturers as it will be well worth the trip for a good vegan cheese. The only other vegan cheese I like is parmazano.

WARNING. The vegan cheese has casein in it. So it's not really vegan. They are now calling it 'fasting cheese' don't ask me why. I thought it was too good to be true!

Especially when the vendor assures you there are no animal products in it. I’m finding that happening quite I bit, always with the small print!

gah - i know i'm a bit late, have been offline for a while. This cheese is DELICIOUS. Apparently in greece (i think it's greece...?) they have some sort of festival in which no animal products are allowed to be eaten, which is why they produce this 'traditional' cheese.
Now, there is a fantastic little place called DIANNE'S DELIGHTS in the deli section of the market (BEST. DOLMADES. EVER). If you are walking past this place on your right, the shop that sells the cheese is the one past it on the corner on the same side.
Does that make sense...? I'm terrible at giving directions!!

Katie. Please note that the cheese does contain casein - a dairy protein, so it's not actually vegan unfortunatly. I was dissappointed to find that out.
