i like this US site http://www.the gardendiet.com/, have a look. the family doesnt bother with a dehydrator at all and there are some great family photos and sample clips. when i come into some spare cash i'm going to buy the e book package.
im really trying to eat raw all day with just one cooked meal a day at the moment.

i have a problem finding alternatives to bread or crackers though and i just dont always fancy more fruit or veg when snacky, i eat that anyway, so snacks are important to find for me.

Default How to get more raw foods in diet?

I've been having trouble gettign raw foods into my diet. The only raw food I eat is salad, oh and fruit, and I feel Im not getting the nutriance I should.

My proplem comes from the fact my mum has an obsession with cooking everything until it is "carmalised" or burnt in most peoples terms! She hardly ever gives us something raw to eat (even carrot sticks get steamed lol).

I've offord to do my own cooking which I am expected to do at my fiances house, but at my mums it was considered to awkard for us to both to cook sperperate meals.

Have you guys any ideas as to how I can get more raw foods in my diet in an interesting way to win my mum over?

    Cheers,
    WolfRain

Hello - perhaps you could try sprouting seeds on a windowsill; the little plants are supposed to be very nutritious and it means you can have something completely fresh every day. I think if you search the forum you will find a few threads about how to do it.

Another thought for eating more raw food in your circs is to add it to cooked things as a garnish. For example you can make sure if you have a sandwich it has plenty of tomato, cucumber, lettuce etc added. I like to put sliced cucumber on my breakfast toast though some people seem to find this a little strange.

Salads and fruit are fine though. Maybe you could expand your repertoire of salads and have a side salad with your mum's meals? Most veg can be eaten raw though some are more digestible than others.

Dried fruit and nuts for snacks.
    Lots of fresh fruit.
Fresh fruit juice and smoothies. Make your own... or PJs or Innocent brand are good in UK. Available in larger and specialist supermarkets.
Make your own sandwiches and put lots of veggies and some of harpy's sprouts in. I'm sure Mum won't mind you doing your own sandwiches if you stay out of her way when she's in the kitchen burning stuff. Make them when she's finished her own stuff.
If you like hummus you can make it with sprouted chick peas instead of cooked ones. Hummus is easy to make if you have a blender or food processor.

Default Considering a Raw Food diet

    Hi guys,

I packed on some weight over the holidays, and I was wanting to try a raw food diet to get that weight off. Are there any suggestions? I have been trying this for the past 12 hours, and I really like how I feel so far. Anyone else given this a try?

Hi Erin, maybe these two threads are interesting for you:

We have many threads about vegan raw food, and consider creating a subforum dedicated to the topic. Good luck!

Raw food isn't a "diet" per say but a way of eating. Unless you intend to do this for life, perhaps you should consider eating more raw foods, not necessarily 100%. But first eliminate all the processed foods you consume....for life.

I'm high raw and love it!

You are right, SeaSiren, and although I mostly eat raw, yet I'm not a raw foodist per se either, because I still eat a couple of slices of bread a day, plus the occasional rice dish. I also use nutritious yeast, and some vegan cheese. But Erin86, just cutting out food containing fat should help with your weight.

Default Switched to raw vegan - got sick?

A couple of days ago I switch to raw vegan for 30 days, "cold turkey" (and plan to stay on it permanently (at least vegan). I was a vegan for 3 years from 97-00 and a vegetarian for another year after that and have been wanting to go back.

Anyways, I woke up this morning and was sick. My wife did have the flu a few days ago, so it could just be that, but it doesn't *feel* like the flu (it's not as bad). Just some light joint pain, stuffiness, and a little woozy.

I've read that, for various reasons, people can get sick if they switch to raw and/or vegan without a transition period (one theory I read was that it was from the pesticides, another was that it was your body "detoxing"). I'm not sure if I buy into either of those though.

So I'm curious if anyone else has ever experienced this, or if it was just a coincidence with the flu?

it's your body getting rid of toxins, what diet were you on before going raw?

I went from omni. to vegan in July and the biggest change I noticed was that I was no longer getting hunger pangs as I had always done. I used to wake up early just because my stomach was telling me to eat something straight away, ahtough I have probably high metabolism.. Now, being hungry is not so urgent for me. Straight away I felt nauseous around cheese and milk although I had always enjoyed eating them. Now, I feel sick at smelling milk. Those were the only changes I experienced.
If I were you, I would maybe check out the symptoms you have with a doctor because it sounds as though you might just be getting the flu.
    Hope you feel better soon.

    Just a standard "whatever" diet...

I've heard the toxin idea before...but I always wonder - what are these toxins? Where inside my body are they coming from? And why do they leave when you eat vegan?

I'm not refuting the toxin theory, but these are questions I haven't seen the answer to (in a scientific way).

The white crap on your tongue when you wake up is all the stuff your body wants to get rid of.
I don't know too much details about it. Scroogle it.

The white stuff you find on your tongue is caused by bacteria growth (or sometimes fungal infections), not stuff your body wants to get rid of.

Default Re: Switched to raw vegan - got sick?

In Chinese medicine each area on the tongue is related to a congested body part, eg front for heart, right front for liver, centre for intestines, so if you have a coated tongue then Nervine is correct it is your body saying "Oi, get rid of those toxins!"

I'm feeling quite a bit better today - just a little stuffed up.

I did some research on the white tongue thing, as I actually do have a bit of that (have had for quite some time). Everything I read said it is just a bacteria or yeast growth - pretty simple...

An interesting thing I found, though, was that eating things that encourage yeast to grow can (obviously) aggravate the problem - so logically it would seem that to stop eating these foods would encourage the problem to go away. The foods/drinks listed to avoid were "sweets, beer, white flour and bakers yeast" (common staples of a lot of omnivores). (http://hivinsite.ucsf.edu/insite?page=ask-02-07)

So, by my thinking, if you go vegan (and especially raw vegan), you will be avoiding a lot of these foods that cause or encourage the problem - therefor the problem goes away.

I'm definitely open to alternative explanations and would be interested in seeing anything that promotes other explanations.

BTW, if anyone is interested in following along with my 30 day challenge to eat raw vegan, you can do so at http://30daysrawvegan.com/

your reaction is very normal 30days.

inside your every cell in your body.. especially your muscles and organs lives these "toxins" that your body is now trying to get rid of.

you know the list of ingredients on the back of a bag of cheetos or twinkies or any processed food?
its like 10 or 12 lines long...

all those nasty additives hang out in your body for extended periods of time and when you eat more of them, they just build up... and when you stop eating them they slowly leave your tissues and can cause reactions like yours (especially when you do it "cold turkey")

things such as nausea, cold like symptoms, acne & other skin reactions, muscle stiffnes, overly coated tounge, bad breath, bad bo are normal detoxing reactions.

they should resolve in a few weeks with your new vegan diet.

    good luck

this week i'm preparing a lot of raw foods for myself and when i look at my shopping list,if i break it down, my fresh fruit, veg, nuts, seeds etc costs way less than the packaged, processed or other foodstuffs my family are eating. of course one still needs to buy things like household stuff but i think if i only bought for myself it would be cheaper if i looked at it over, say, a month. (i say a month as the big bags of nuts etc would last that long.)

there are lots of good raw books around - one of the best i think is alissa cohen's 'living on live foods'. its concise, has shopping lists, recipes, testimonys etc. it also has a good food combining chart so you can see the best foods to eat with others to get the max benefit and absorption - also it shows the foods which do not go together or digest together well. its a big book and rather pricey, but i've found it invaluable.

    Hi all,

I am 100% raw and have been for 2 and a half years. I had been a junk food vegan for many years (13) and developed many health problems like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety, IBS, hormonal imbalances, candida, chronic bladder infections and a few other things I'm probably forgetting. After spending thousands of dollars of conventional and alternative therapies and supplements and cleaning up my diet considerably, going raw was the only thing that made me feel better. I also lost a great deal of weight that I needed to lose. You can see my before and after pics on the "my story" section of my website listed below. I love eating raw!! I eat a very simple fruit based raw vegan diet and feel better at age 37 than I ever have!! It is awesome. I highly encourage anyone who is interested to give raw a try!!!

    Hi there,

I was mostly inspired by those who teach a natural hygiene approach. Dr. Douglas Graham (www.foodnsport.com), Dave Klein (www.livingnutrition.com) and Nora Lenz (www.livingnutrition.com) among others. Dave Klein has an awesome raw magazine called Living Nutrition that I highly recommend everyone subscribe to.

Have you tried going raw yet? I am on my third day and finding it difficult. I am hungry all the time and crave the foods I used to eat. I feel like I am punishing myself at times and want to give up, then I manage to get hold of myself. I have a problem with my stomach and I am hoping that going raw will help in some way.

For the last 4 weeks i'm on a raw diet. i trully believe that eating raw is man's perfectly natural diet. It seems quite rational if one thinks that the only animal on the planet that cooks food is human. I believe that before ice age, our kind ate just fruits and nuts and lived a (biologically) normal life. when you first go raw, your body has yernings for processed food and there might be moments when you feel a bit dizzy. It's the change that happens in your body while it tries to adjust and it's totally natural. SO instead of getting panicked you need to give yourself some time to adjust. Now i start to feel much more energetic with optimism about life. i only sleep 5 hours for a fully energetic 24hour day! My sweat doesn't smell that bad as it used to and mosquitoes somehow don't like biting me! I know it sounds crazy but it's true and i am surprised too!

I have concluded that the more raw you eat the more health benefits you reap.

well, i believe that you can eat raw during winter too as there are oranges, tangerines, apples, lettuce, cabbage and others...
however i think you're right that some foods might be better cooked as beans for example or whole rice. Lentils though can easily be consumed raw after several hours in the water...

Personally, i think that one can survive with a 100% raw diet but in our days the best would be a 90% raw ...

I suppose I was referring to the fact that when it's cold you might want something warming, at that point a 100% raw diet might become a bit tricky. But I wish you all the best with your diet!

I think Abby meant some of it did not sprout.
This is usually due to using seeds which are too old or have not been stored in a cool dry place.
If the sprouts which have sprouted seem nice and fresh you can just pick them out and rinse the ones which did not sprout away down the drain.
Always buy seeds for sprouting from somewhere with a good turnover to ensure they are fresh.

    HI Everyone,
I'm a Raw Vegan....I eat 100% vegan and eat about 85-99% Raw...just depends on the day or month I suppose. Sometimes I go days and days on end eating 100% Raw organic, and sometimes I eat 2 out of 3 meals Raw for a few days before going back to eating more Raw.

I went Raw because I needed more energy. I found that I simply felt better when I ate more Raw and unprocessed foods. I felt much better after going vegan, from my old diet of a bodybuilder, but I just felt that I was still missing.

I needed more nutrients and better digestion than what I was experiencing. For me...I've never felt better in my life. My mindset, mental focus, energy, and overall health improved greatly. I don't get CRAZY about it. If I'm somewhere that doesn't have Raw food or if I'm traveling, then I just eat whatever is cooked and vegan. But, most other times I'm Raw and I'm loving it!

    Cheers!
