Default How long are they good for?

since becoming vegan i have lived off of fried potatoes...not very healthy i know...so i thought i would start cooking some things in large batches and just reheat thru out the week...but i have a couple of questions...

how long does cooked rice stay good in the fridge?

how about hummus? how long can hummus stay out of the fridge without spoiling?

any suggestions of anything else that can be cooked in large batches to be reheated thru out the week?

    Blimey do this:

    1. Invest in a good frying pan.

    2. Get a spray on olive oil.

    3. Use sweet potatoes.

Vary diet with sauces to give flavour.

    or get some vegetables.

Well some kiss-ass will inform you of the search function on the forum.

    See what I did there?

Basically vegan stuff last the same time as any other food, but heres the trick - you are much less likely to get food posioning than meat/dairy.

Just use your nonce and gut, about a 7/10 days for rice, hummous probably half that.

Cooked rice is a bit dodgy, as it is a good breeding ground for bacteria.
If you reheat it, make sure it is very hot.

I would say it eat it up to 2 days after cooking if kept in the fridge.

Commercial hummous says eat within 2 days of opening, so I reckon 3 days tops in the fridge - not very long at all outside the fridge.

Hummus usually lasts about 3 or 4 days once opened.
I guess rice will be ok for a couple of days.

Chilli is easy and heats up well. Lentil stew. Potato salad (use soya cream, mustard, ground pepper for dressing) is nice to keep in the fridge. Ratatouille. Or just throw in a stir fry, takes minutes.

Many nutrients are reduced through cooking/storing, so the question is rather how long you will last if you eat only non-fresh, cooked food...!

Wow, I guess I keep most things quite a big longer...

    Hummus about a week...

I've kept rice for about 5 days. If it starts getting dry, just put a little water (maybe a tablespoon or two) mix it in and reheat it (in a pan or in a microwave)...

If it tastes fine, I eat it

Like puffin suggested, chilis, soups and stews are good for about a week, if you want to cook for the whole week...

You should read the link I posted, DancingWillow. Reheating and/or keeping rice for more than a day or two is very dodgy.

Cooked rice is a common source of food poisoning.

    Good point Rob(QC)

Why bother cooking the rice? Uncooked rice lasts for yonks.

Thanks Rob, I'll read it I keep foods for longer because I don't like wasting food. I guess it might be easier if I was living with people with whom I'd share food (bf, husband, or family)...that way a container of hummus would be finished faster and wouldn't stay in the fridge so long (and same with other foods)

    Yes...

Re. cooking rice. remember that while brown rice needs circa 40 minutes cooking time, it doesn't need to be boiling all that time. You can put it aside and the softening process will still continue since the rice is still in very hot water.

If you use a pressure cooker, it takes only circa 5 minutes to cook rice.

Yeah, just cook a little bit of a rice at a time. It's really quick, if you do it the Tigerlily Way! Just soak it in warm water for a few hours and then cook it how you would normally with a little less water. It should be done within 10-15* minutes tops. It regularly takes 30-40 minutes, right?

*For brown rice, white rice might be even quicker.

    Or make couscous instead!

    1. bring water to boil in saucepan

    2. dump in couscous

    3. bring water back to the boil

    4. Put lid firmly on pan and remove from heat

    5. Leave it for about 5-10 minutes

    6. Stir, and eat!

Sorry not sure how long it lasts for in the fridge.

Yes, I got violently ill from eating avocado sushi rolls one day - I was told it was probably the rice.

I guess so. The packet I have says it is Whole Wheat made with 100% Semolina flour.

    Here's their website:
