FOUR CORNERS - "MONKEY LOVE"
Next on Four Corners... Exploring the fine line that separates
legitimate scientific research from needless cruelty. "Monkey
Love", 8.30 pm Monday 12 June, ABC TV.
MONKEY LOVE
To his fans, research psychologist Harry Harlow was a 20th
century hero, a scientific pioneer who revolutionised the way we
raise our children today.
To his detractors, Harlow was a vain opportunist, subjecting
animals to the cruellest experiments to boost his own fame.
Such are the irreconcilable - yet widely held - views of Harlow
and his legacy. What is certain is that Harlow was architect of
some of the most controversial experiments ever performed in
an animal laboratory.
But did he have to go to such extremes with his experiments?
What are the limits to a scientist's right to hurt animals? Was the
animals' suffering worth the knowledge we gained about raising
children today?
This documentary from Britain's Channel 4 explores
researchers' core ethical dilemma about when the ends justify
the means, as well as a question at the heart of the science: can
cruelty teach us anything about love? "Monkey Love" - on Four
Corners, 8.30 pm Monday 12 June, ABC TV.
This program will be repeated about 11 pm Wednesday 14
June; also on ABC2 digital channel at 7 pm and 9.30 pm
Wednesday.
