I tasted mushroom in Thai/Chinesse recipe, when I was in New Delhi. I ate it first time there. Is it good stuff or bad one?
What are benefits and losses?

I hope they are OK as I eat them quite a lot
I heard they are almost entirely water and don't add significant quantities of either nutrients or "anti-nutrients" to the diet.
"Danger" could be my middle name … but it's "John"
If so, should we eat it, as you said it has very poor nutirion value.
Manish Jain
Manish,
Mushrooms are certainly healthy. It is said that mushrooms contain essential nutrients. They are a great source of phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and selenium, nutrients often lacking in our high-processed-food diets. Also, mushrooms contain virtually no fat or cholesterol. They are also naturally low in sodium and a good source of fiber.
So they are quite safe and healthy. And I love em!!!!

Well if mushrooms don't have any nutrients that means I can stop eating them as I dislike them a lot. lol
^^ So they are healthy? Oh good so I haven't been eating them for nothing then.

Mushrooms provide a lot of substances that are essential for our metabolism as Kiran said..
Rob, it depends of what type of mushroom are you talking about.. That are a lot of "wild" mushrooms that are full of nutritive substances
Mushrooms are SO SO disgusting!!!
(Oops, apologies for that not on topic outburst, I just couldn't help myself! )
Cherry for what reasons? Please
Manish Jain
They are! I hate 'em too. And they are not safe for people with mold or yeast problems. They aren't even recommended to feed to dogs. But if you are healthy, and you like them, you don't need to avoid them.Cherry
I believe, mushrooms do not require any Sunlight for its production. Does it affect it? Sunlight controls many bad micro organism or whatever in edibles.
Manish Jain
Well, yes, eating fungi is a bit weird in itself
What I meant though was that I personally find them slimy and *shudder* just disgusting. Even the smell of them makes me feel ill.
I'm allergic to them (if I eat them I feel really really sick and dizzy and bloated) but I didn't know that until a couple of years ago. I've always just hated them.
Sorry mushrooms. Nothing personal.
PS, and yes, you're right Manish, mushrooms don't need sunlight. I wouldn't have thought this had much to do with them being healthy, other than the fact that they are fungi and not plants.- What do you mean?Manish
I think mushrooms give dishes a sort of meaty texture without being gross and realistic like meat subsitutes. Yum!
Sautee them with onions (using about 1-2 tsp of olive oil) and season with cumin and soy sauce. Delicious!
Peace, love, and happiness.
Cherry, maybe you and Redwellies can form a "I hate Mushrooms Club". She too dislikes mushrooms. In fact she gets violent, if the word is mentioned anywhere near her.
I love mushrooms especially the mushroom pakoras. Yum. Yum,. I use them a lot in stir-frys and currys. The rogan-josh with mushrooms is my fav.

Mushrooms make tofu scrambles delicous!
Peace, love, and happiness.
I love mushrooms too! I'm a little surprised to know that quite a few people really despise them (people on this forum and people I know). I think they're very flavorful and eat them mostly for that reason, not for the nutrients. But, if they have nutrients in them, then all the better

Im with you willow. I love them.
My husband and eldest hate them so i dont eat them very often.
I wait till i go out and have mushroom in everything.
Whoa! I think I love you, Kiran.Kiran

Twinkle gurl, we ought to have a meetup in leeds sometime. I promise it will be a mushroom overload. I cook quite well.twinkle
I owe you one Twinke. I still remember that day last July when you gave me some nice candy. So this time I'm gonna return the favour with mushroom rogan-gosh.
The leeds meetup is in the agenda, as I was discussing it with vegandrummersam the other day. So keep drooling till then.

I go by the philosophy that one should eat as many different vegetables--including fungi--as possible. Scientists actually don't know very much about vitamins and there could be many vitamins yet to be discovered.
It is also amazing how many different flavors and textures there are.
Can anoyone recommend me a mushroom? All I eat are the standard white button ones...
Peace, love, and happiness.
Tigerlily, portobello mushrooms are very good especially when marinated, and I like shiitake mushrooms as well (in stir fry's, etc).

I'm a huge mushroom fan as well. Tigerlily, I second Willow's suggestion of portobello's. They are incredible!!
I either drizzle them w/ a marinade of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, parsely, & rosemary and put them under the broiler. Serve up on bread w/ nayonnaise sprinkled w/ tarragon....yum. OR..
The Portobello Mushroom Bake in The Garden of Vegan is superb.
Yeh I think we already didKiran
I meant, if we keep any food grade/ edible stuff in dark( in 0 sunlight) it will get spoiled and harmful bacterias will grow inside. So, in the mushroom is there any possibility of harmful bacterias inside.Cherry
Mushrooms are plants/fruits ? or just fungi
Manish Jain
Several fried or grilled portobello mushrooms make a great filling for a burger. Add some tomato, ghurkin, english mustard and ketchup and you're there.
And on a wholemeal bun of course.
Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of fungi. They're a totally different kingdom to all other fruits/veg which are all plants.indianvegan
I've never heard anything regarding sunlight and bacteria, so I couldn't say about that. As far as I'm aware, most bacteria grow perfectly well in light and dark. Obviously some things, potatoes for example, will start to sprout and become inedible if left in the dark, but that's different and about plant mechanisms, not about bacteria.
I wouldn't have thought that mushrooms had more bacteria in them because they don't need light. They're still disgusting tho
I agree!!!Cherry

Not sure if I even want to think about them that much actually! I'd rather think about artichokes. Anyway, way past my bedtime
I love mushrooms, I just wish they were cheaper. Portabello and shitaki are my favorites. This morning I had a tofu scramble burritto with lots of sauteed portabellos and salsa. Sooo good!!!
i went from loving mushrooms, to hating/being scared of them, to putting up with them, to totally loving many of them.
i still get weirded out by some varieties.
i feel really good after eating mushrooms. well fed, healthy, that sort of thing, so based on that, i think they're pretty good for a person (who isn't allergic to them).

I love them! Especially when grilled or roasted. Spongey fried mushrooms, not so much. Portabello mushrooms are fantastic!
They're definitely not going to do you any harm, so eat up ;D
If so, it is good.Korn

Additionally, shiitakes and some other types may have anti-cancer properties. Research is on-going.Kiran

Before I went vegan I used to hate mushrooms. In fact I used to hate practically all vegitables.
I got to like mushrooms while I was studying at RNCB (Royal national college for the blind). The cooks used to make me a lot of food that had mushrooms in and eventually I got to like the taste of them.
I love mushrooms. I put them in my salad, my stir fry, soup, etc. I gotta try the other types like portobello and shiitake. Thanks for the suggestion.
well i believe theyre good for you. my naturopath gave me a concoction to strengthen my immune system so i dont get sick. it was mainly made of something from shiitake mushrooms and echinachea.
well lets just say before i took it, i got bronchitis and pneumonia all the time. after i took it ive only gotten like one cold in 6 months.
i love mushrooms.

Now,it seems that if one is not allergic to fungi, can consume it.

most provide a wealth of protein, fiber, B vitamins, and vitamin C, as well as calcium and other minerals. maitake, shiitake, and reishi mushrooms have been shown to boost heart health; lower the risk of cancer,; promote immune function; ward off viruses, bacteria, and fungi; reduce inflammation; combat allergies; help balance blood sugar levels; and support the body's detoxification mechanisms. Mushrooms are low in carbohydrates, calories and sodium and are cholesterol and fat free! They are high in riboflavin and contain as much fiber as 1 medium tomato. They are also a good source of niacin, pantothenate and copper.
I will not eat anything that walks, runs, skips, hops or crawls. God knows that I've crawled on occasion, and I'm glad that no one ate me.
