    Default The Sports Thread

I've noticed that Blueshark likes his sport. He can't be the only one, so here is a thread where everyone who feels like it can ramble on about all things sporty!

I used to go to the track to watch the dogs. Never won though.

other than that I'm form Boston so I have to watch the Sox and the Pats religiously and love every minute of it and the 7th inning stretch is one of my favorite things to do. Celtics are good to casually follow and go to a game or two but they arnt exactly in the same category. Don't follow the bruins much at all...

Does anyone have any advice about getting back in to sport/exercise? Back in 2004 my mum wanted me and my sister to take up some exercise so we did Tai Chi for a few months near the end of the year which was free, but they stopped after Christmas,so we didn't go again. I also went swimming as a young child, but only because it was deemed necessary to learn how to swim and i gave up drama around 12 because i wasn't comitted. Does anyone know how i can get back into sport/exercise since it's always such a pain with times and knowing what to wear etc. even though i know about classes and have some of this information but i am nervous around lots of people so i generally avoid it, maybe thats the problem, but i do have a Tai Chi DVD at home with Qigong and 18-step workout, but rarely get a chance to use it even though i really like Tai Chi.
My friend who is a black beltin Tae Kwon do has said that i could join her at her club, but i'd feel a bit stupid at beginner's level when she has such a high grade, what do you think?

The hardest part of getting fit is starting. Recently I've begun running, but I was pretty nervous as I hadn't actually run since I was forced to at school about 6 years ago. But, I started slowly just running the tiny block my house is on and I'm now, 4 weeks later, running almost 2 miles a day as well as doing about half an hour of yoga. I've toned up, lost some weight and most importantly feel fit and full of energy. The hardest step is the first, and you might have to try a few different sports until you find one that's fun. Once you do it'll be easy because you'll find it fun, want to do it more and so improve.

As for starting at a low level, everyone has to start somewhere. I'm the sort of person that thinks if I'm not good at something straight away I must be crap and so I give up, but I work against that and set myself little achievable goals. Like running a bit further this week than last week. I keep a log so I can see how far I've come. I try and stay positive and as a result have stuck to it.

    Good luck!
