Today I paid almost $9 for three bananas. Not even organic!
Will somebody please tell me when this Madness is going to end??!! Are our tropical farmers recovering??
Australia....
After cyclone Larry hit our shores, there was a terrible silence.... everyone had turned off their blenders. There would be no more banana smoothies

we can't have a banana smoothie crisis so I'll air mail you some bananas.....life without bananas is unbearable and I wouldn't wish it on anyone...
seriously though, $9 for 3 bananas, that's robbery and sounds like some of the price gauging that went on after hurricane katrina hit in new orleans
I heard on the radio the other day that we can expect our na-nies back about October so they will be cheaper, but not back to normal until Decemberish... I feel so potassium deprieved... I also heard that due to the cold weather in Victoria this winter we can expect the prices of Oranges and Mandarins to go up significantly in the next couple of weeks... now they've gone to far...
does not seem to have affected our UK prices.
Maybe it is due to where they are sourced. Most of the UKs are imported by fyffes http://www.fyffes.com/company.php
See my local diary ... http://herbwormwood.blogspot.com/

Oh god please no.
*dies*
as if we aren't tortured enough! what are we supposed to eat this winter??!

I would say go for it... however they'd probably be "confiscated" by the greedy customs officers.
I heard on the news that someone had even stolen a whole banana tree out of someone else's backyard! They're worth a lot on the black market. Or should I say, yellow market

Same. It's so annoying. I love bananas. Now they have become such a treat, when before they were a daily staple. My oatmeal misses his banana slices in the morning
Was wondering if anyone thinks this whole banana thing is a conspiracy...like, an excuse to jack up the prices??? I heard it was only one banana plant that got bolted over by Larry (not sure if that is true)

It's a pretty dumb plan if that is the case. They've jacked them up so high that no one short of millionaires can afford to buy them anymore!
Oh dear, do I sacrifice my morals against eating imported produce or go bananaless until summer? Decisions, decisions....
It doesn't seem right that more petroleum should be used up just so we can make cheap smoothies... but still.... it's BANANAS!
Banana growers in Qld, who lost their crops during the Larrie cyclone, have got the Qld Govt to agree not to allow imports of bananas - in accordance with import regulations, so we don't import diseases.
I think it's important we still try and support out nana industry. most people are happy to pay a couple of dollars for a choc bar but bananas are a much healthier option. just get 1 or 2 a week. some poor buggers cant even afford a decent meal once a day so im not going to worry about paying a couple of dollars for a couple of bananas.
I'm with you there, I only buy bananas when I really have to, (Simply have not had the money) But I'm not a big banana eatter anyhow... Aust growers really need all the help they can get.
Agree with treehugga.
I guess I'm dramatizing the situation a little because I never realised how much bananas are such a staple for me! I seriously would put them in everything! When baking bread, cakes, muffins, or in smoothies, icecream, muesli, porridge, sandwiches, even curries! But I guess this can be a positive thing... it will lead me to experiment with new food stuffs
I've greedily had banana every day since the 'banana crisis'. I don't care how much it costs. I won't give them up! I compromise slightly by cutting the big ones in half.
It's supposed to improve by September I think it is.
Strawberries aren't too dear at the mo, but not too fab in cake etc.
Try some orange poppyseed cake and a nutloaf.
I am suspecting nanas have addictive additives added by these responses of urges you people have. Maybe we could start a support group
I actually crave mango all year and they're always expensive with or without cyclones, but refuse to buy those rock hard mexican things available in winter- yuck!
god forbid anything should happen to apples!
I spent five months living in tanzania, they have the best bananas in the whole wide world. We had about twenty banana plants growing in the garden, and two mango trees. paradise....
oh to be reincarnated as a monkey!
Weekend banana price? $15.99 a kilo. My dad still insists on eating them everyday (he went the first 12 years of his life banana-less and we think he's trying to make up for it now ). My mother jokes that she may need to take out a second mortgage if he continues to insist on daily banana consumption. Meanwhile she has the rest of us rationed to 2 bananas a week
Diana (formerly of Adelaide, now once again of Sydney - yay!)
the irony is, my ex-girlfriend couldn't stand bananas and wouldn't even let them inside the house - I was deprived for two years! Now I'm living on my own again, denied yet again by cruel mother nature and her mischievous ways with cyclones.
my dad is struggling as well, he's been eating porridge and banana for brekky for 65 years - it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but he says sultanas aren't so bad as a substitute. ;o)
According to this article, bananas are going to become extinct, unless we're willing to accept a GM fruit. I can't imagine life without bananas
That article reads like an advertisement for GM
Besides, I'm slowly learning how to survive without bananas. Now all I need to do is ween myself off Chai tea and I could handle any nuclear disaster!

I heard about that a while ago. We could always start eating a different species of banana though, instead of genetically modifying the Cavendish. Fifty years ago we ate a sweeter-tasting banana than we do now, and it went extinct in the same way so we went to Cavendishes.
