I will not eat anything that walks, swims, flies, runs, skips, hops or crawls.
Bisto gravey powder.
Damn, I was going to say ratatouille as well. How about felafels, then?
You could call the thread "crypto-vegan food" but then no-one would probably know what you meant
erm - "Accidentally Vegan Food?" but I do like the sound of crypto-vegan harpyKorn
It's always amusing to watch the expressions of people who know you are vegan, watching you eat something that they think is not vegan and suspect that you don't know what they seem to know. My most recent surprise was Oreo's by Nabisco - a chocolate filled biscuit. Not really a choc fan myself but it is nice to be able to share them with others. Most people like to read the ingredients to check for themselves...
Veganblue- oreaos might be vegetarian, but not vegan.
Ingredients
Regular Oreos Ingredients:
Sugar, flour, hydrogenated soybean oil, cocoa, high fructose corn syrup, whey, corn starch, baking soda, salt, soy lecithin, vanillin, chocolate
Mini Oreos Ingredients:
Flour, sugar, hydrogenated soybean oil, cocoa, lactose, high fructose corn syrup, corn flour, whey, corn starch, salt, baking soda, soy lecithin, vanillin, chocolate
At least they changed the old 'tallow' to 'hydrogenated soybeans oil.'
Tapenade/hummus of course/peperonata (a delicious Italian vegetable stew)/minestrone
Thanks Northern Lights, but you gave me a start! I think we may have different suppiers of Oreo's - our ingredients read;Northern Lights
Chocolate Creme Oreos
Sugar, wheat flour vegetable shortening (contains antioxidant [319], foodacid [330]), cocoa powder, high fructose syrup, corn starch, raising agents(500,503), salt, emulsifier, soy lecithin), flavour.
A vegan in Melbourne told me about it - not all of their range are vegan tho - there are new nutty ones that aren't vegan. Ours are made in Indonesia by Nabisco licensed to Kraft foods.
Thanks for the check though!
"if compassion is extreme, then call me an extremist"
Good to know you double checked! I hate it when I KNOW something is 'safe' and then they go and change the ingredients on me!
I have a list of "accidentally vegan" foods from Peta's website that has Uh-Oh Oreos, Spring Oreos, Chocolate Creme Oreos and Mint Creme Oreos on it, but not the regular ones.

So the Americans get the whey and killer hydrogenated oils. Just what we need. It's not like most people care about their health, anyway.
I was about to reply to Artichoke's post with a rant about how fat and unhealthy most people (in the Midwest at least) are, but then I looked at my computer desk and saw the soy ice cream I just finished and the bag of garlice chips I've been eating while typing and changed my mind.

peanut butter & jelly sandwiches are 'accidentally vegan'.
As I have studied,Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil is a kind of white poison for your health.
Three white poisons for our body :-
1. White Flour
2. White H.Vegetable Oil
3. White Refined Sugar

Don't forget to save those seeds from your Halloween pumpkin. Not only are they subtly sweet and nutty with a chewy texture, roasted pumpkin seeds are one of the most flavorful and nutritious seeds you can add to your Healthier Way of Eating. One quarter cup provides 58% of your daily value (DV) for magnesium, 34% DV for iron and 21% DV for zinc. And they are easy to pack and fun to eat!------http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=82Pumpkin Seeds are one of the World's Healthiest Foods.
Manish
- baked beans on toast
- peanut butter sandwiches
- hummus
- oatmeal (unless cooked with milk)
- yeast spread (marmite/vegemite etc...) on toast (no butter)
- rice cakes/corn thins
- salted nuts
- water crackers
- most breakfast cereals (minus the milk)
- spaghetti with plain tomato sauce
- ketchup
- (in some cases) dark chocolate
I went into a veggie restaurant that usually does one vegan dish. The place is very popular for corpse eaters. I was a bit early and a group of elderly women discussed the menu and decided to have the bean goulash, the vegan dish.Time went on and my friend was a bit late. When she arrived the vegan dish was no more, they had ran out, except one portion. My friend ended up having just grilled toms and olives in a salad.
This usually infuriates me as in their innocence they not only pinch the one vegan dish but if they had known previously it was vegan they would have probibly refused it!!.
At least they realised after having heard our plea for the vegan bean goulash.
dhal and rice
corn chips and salsa
nuts and dried fruit
blueberry bagels!
sorbet from this yummy place called trampoline
vitari
fries (depending on the way theyre cooked!)
"you dont have to be tall to see the moon" - african proverb
salad dressings with oil base thus lots of salads
pretzels
foccacia bread with oil /basmatic vinegar (canadian restaurants like this one)
bruchetta without the extra cheese sprinkled on top
fruit salad
soups with a veggie stock base (mushroom often, just not the cream kind)
I think there's LOTS of things that in their base form are vegan. It's the stuff we add to it or put on top that destroy it.
Pasta with tomato sauce
Bread with ....
Rice with ....
Potatotes with ....
It's true, Arti. We, with modern science and billions spent on reserach get "franken-foods" and by-products. God Bless America!
Silent Vegan food:
Fresh Guacamole!
I say fresh because the frozen and or packaged stuff usually has dairy in it of some sort and even at some restaurants sour cream is mixed in...
Manish, Pumpkin seeds are all the rage over here at the moment, thanks to a programme on the TV called 'You are what you eat'. I must admit they are nice and a bit nutty.
Look on the bright side, the restaurant may increase their vegan range as there is a demand for it.tails4wagging
Ah yes! very true!ConsciousCuisine
Guacamole is a wonderful thing when it's not been tainted with bovine breast juice.
i love guacamole
"freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose"
Bovril. Yep, its now vegan, though made by Unilever.
Many a time have i tucked into something on this list with the protests of my uninformed housemates...
Bourbon biscuits
Fry's chocolate cream bars
Baked beans on toast
Curly fries / wedges
Provamel yogurts (i know a girl meat eater who buys them all the time coz they taste better)
Hobnobs
Garlic bread (made without butter)
Ryvita / crackers
Noodles
Jam
Papadums
Onion bhajees
Vegetable samosas
Hot Chocolate (some brands)
Pancakes (without egg)
potato chips and coke

hummus and pita
guacamole
spagetti and marinara
bread
"organic" bread...
certified organic bread does not contain L-cysteine
(loves organic sourdough bread himself)
After Eight Mints (dark chocolate variety) are apparently vegan.
It depends where they are made me thinks. Some may have butter or other no no's in them I've heard. Best check the ingredients.
Really? I've never observed butter in the ingredients before, but I'm a bit suspicious of the lecithin content.... Besides they're made by Nestle, a company I don't like very much.
Supermarket cooking sauces. Loads of these are vegan.
I've heard that Walkers chicken flavour and prawn cocktail flavour crisps are vegan.
"He who binds himself to a Joy, Does the winged life destroy;
He who kisses the Joy as it flies, Lives in Eternity's sunrise"
William Blake
bean burrito from taco bell
correct me if I'm wrong , but I heard that was vegan....
I still wouldn't eat that shit though :d
AFAIK, it's vegan.
The rice isn't anymore, though.
Pity. The 7 layer burritos, minus the sour cream and cheese used to be a good option when there was nothing else to be had.
It's vegan, which means it's vegetarian which means there's nothing unheathy in it. -- my guy trying to explain vegan junkfood.
I dont think After Eights are vegan now??.
Elisabeth Shaws are.
Interesting topic, most of the above people don't think of as vegan food, plus...
salsa and lightly salted doritos (NOT the flavoured ones though)
pasta (my mum thought all pasta was made with egg!)
pot noodle (sweet and sour and hot chicken curry flavours are listed in the animal free shopper) most omnis don't realise thats its texturised soya, not meat.
I also like to point out to omni's to look at the meat content of cheapo sausages, etc, and they'll fint it's like 60% soya.... makes them think!
It is a monstrous thing to do, to slay a unicorn...you have slain something pure and defenceless and you will have but a half life, a cursed life, from the moment the blood touches your lips.
Before I discovered 'making waves fish' I used to use tufo covered with this 'fish and chip shop batter' which I think is vegan. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
whipped-up sorbet made from frozen bananas
I made some of this one day and was just eating it when my octigenarian landlord came round, so i asked would he like some - he just had a little drop of it but was quite impressed with it, and most amazed to find that it contained neither milk nor cream and was just frozen bananas blended up until smooth.
crumpets
The day breaks and everything is new.
pillsbury pizza crust (well, depends on if you consider the company "vegan enough" or not)
salsa and corn chips
canned tomato soup or some other soups
some breads
"you dont have to be tall to see the moon" - african proverb
Anyone have any suggestions? So far I can only think of:-
Baked beans on toast/jacket potato
Marmite on toast
I'm trying to find ways for it to almost be 'invisible' in terms of additional effort for my husband who is a little worried for me of the extra effort my new way of eating will bring as he knows I'm not so good at stress...
Also for family who will undoubtedly want to know what to feed me when I visit... I don't feel I should expect them to keep a stock of vegan supplies in for the occasional meal but it would be nice to know what they could easily provide from 'normal' supplies. I plan to always eat first and carry snacks but for some reason my family have always been hung up on feeding us!
Thanks!

Can't remember whether we had these earlier in the thread but quite a lot of Italian food is almost, if not quite, vegan, and can easily be adapted: mushroom risotto, pasta with tomato sauce or with garlic, chili and oil, veg. pizza without cheese, (pre-cooked) polenta with veg. sauce...
I also think you'll find that cooking vegan food isn't actually more effort once you get used to it!
Pasta!
context is everything
what food suprised you that were vegan mine was jelly tots
preferably in uk so if i didnt know i can get them to
