Blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer "extortion". The "X" makes it sound cool.
i've still yet to try brussell sprouts...

^Another sprout lover here. How could anyone hate sprouts? They're so cute.
i want to try roasting them, i've heard thats really good...
"i'm rejecting my reflection, cause i hate the way it judges me."
I've never tried roasting them but have also heard that they're good that way.

The past few times I've roasted them as well. I really like them that way. There's a great recipe in VWAV.
I've never had them either. I always heard they were the nastiest of veggies. Why do they get such a bad rep?
"To reduce suffering means to reduce the amount of ignorance, the basic affliction with us." -Thich Nhat Hanh
Broccoli gets a bad rep too. I bet it's a smear campaign from the omni front!
I know that it's actually a genetic thing. There is a sulphurous compound in all brassicas them that tastes very different to some people and stimulates a gag reflex. From memory, it's this compound that makes a lot of brassicas cold tolerant as it prevents the sap freezing in them and causing tissue damage.
My husband can not stand even the smell of some brassicas, brussels being the worst for him. Because brussels are very delicate, but have a ball of leaves you need to cook them for longer than some other brassicas to get them cooked in the centre, and this releases more of the chemical.
Anyway, yes, this glucose based compound is mildly toxic, and more people have a stronger taste response to this, which is understood to be a genetic issue.
Quitting something because it's hard is wrong, and quitting something because it's wrong is hard. One takes cowardice, the other bravery.
^ Interesting!! Thanks. I have to do some experimenting then

My comfortfood definitely is dark chocolate and cashews!! Once I started on them, I can´t stop.........
I don´t eat anything with a face.
I'm really enjoying coconut milk ice cream right now.
When I'm cold:
Cream of some vegetable soup, so thick that the spoon stays on top.
Stews.
Puddings.
When I'm not feeling well:
Potatoes.
When I'm nervous:
Chocolate.
Cauliflower, mushrooms, (both of which I eat like popcorn) and the stalks of broccoli (spears)...mmm
wow, i wish i had your palate.

me too...i'm trying to make baked kale my comfort food...cause i'm so found of chips...but its not working too well...everytime i burp after i get a kale after taste...
"i'm rejecting my reflection, cause i hate the way it judges me."
I don't think I'd mind that... we have a bunch of kale right now. It's just such a pain to make the chips.

how do you make them ruby? maybe i'm just not doing it right...
"i'm rejecting my reflection, cause i hate the way it judges me."
I just rip the kale into small pieces, toss them around in a lidded container with a Tbs of oil and vinegar, then bake at 375F in a single layer until they're dry (10 min or so). They're easy, but the single layer is what's such a pain. It only makes a handful so I end up having like 10 batches. My oven is tiny too.

ok thats how i did it...maybe its an aquired taste...well i mean they tasted good but the burps! oh the burps!!!! lol
"i'm rejecting my reflection, cause i hate the way it judges me."
^those sound good. the chips. not the burps.
I'll have to try them.
How can crispy kale be the same as crisps?! It just won't happen.
Mmmmmmmmmm crisps...I eat massive bags in one sitting if I allow myself. Corn chips and houmous or g/f pretzels and houmous. Oh yes.
I prefer savoury to sweet...cake and stuff just makes me feel sick in excess!

^ I agree! You know I really love potato chips and ketchup. thats my favorite.

Okay. I just really hate kale, I've tried in hundred thousand ways and I still hate it!!!!!!1 Don't give a monkey's right ear how good it is for you, still not eating it.

hahahaha. funny.

Mmm I just read about brussle sprouts - loves em' raw. Never cooked.
And I'm really into tomato slices with freshly cracked black pepper over them...
And sliced raw sweet potato, turnip sticks...Basically every single vegetable in their raw form MMMM
never even thought of eating brussels sprouts raw... any favourite dip for them?
Mainly I love them plain but if I ever feel like dipping vegges it's usually in this tastey dijion cayenne sauce I like to make...Mmm the spicier the better.
It goes very well with any vegge sticks (turnip, sweet potatoe, carrots, cuke, even apple and pear slices) LOVES IT. haha
Mashed potatoes with peas and loads of brown sauce!
I also am partial to soup, it I'm too lazy to make my own I also love Baxter's Carrot and Butterbean or Healthy Autumn Vegetable.
Also the obvious ones, chips and pizza!
Stir fry...
I have no idea why, but...yum...I espesh love it with butterbeans and rice noodles...
Butterbeans, mixed veggies and rice noodles with gluten free soya sauce.

VEGENAISE!! With everything... potato salad, chip dips, on burgers, with fries.. mmm soo bad but soo good, haha. And chocolate almond milk. Mmmm.
at the moment, I am obsessed with rice, stir-fried mushrooms and kejap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce). Perfect for breakfast
Toast with sunflower Pure. Goes back to childhood. And I love nooch on it.
Say you've had a really shitty day what would you eat to cheer you up?
What's your vegan comfort food?
Back a few months ago I would just head to a bar have a nice beer and some fries, but I've quit drinking and I'm a bit more health conscious these days, so some staples for me when I've had a bad day are
Falafel and Hummus
Chocolate Chip Cookies and Soy Milk
A cup of earl grey and a vegan scone
A nice spicy curry or Dosa
A vegan pizza
As strange as it may be, cereal and soymilk is my comfort food. I just can't get enough of the stuff. I'm trying to go raw, so I haven't had it in a long time but those vegan "macaroni and chreese" boxes were my comfort food. I used to love that crappy kraft mac & cheese garbage from my childhood so it's more indulging in nostagia than anything. I always had a weakness for pasta and bread, but I haven't had any in about a month. This time I think I'll stick to my comfortable 75% raw diet I'm at now.
..... Great... now I'm craving it, lol
I can tell I am going to like this thread I'm a big fan of comfort food, it doesn't take much for me to decide I need it!
My current favourite comfort food is a big pile of grilled polenta, I seriously love that stuff.
Also, crisps are another one, as well as a good ol' cup of tea. And grapes, randomly!
I'm with Bearshark, chips.. or as we say in NZ 'chups'.
I like cornchups and salt and vinegar chups. Oh and cake. I loooove de cake.
Generally as long as I can devour it in jumbo proportions it's going. Emotional eater here

Any kind of baked goods. Muffins, scones, cake, cookies. Lately though, it's been more savory. Like Hell Pizza with cajun wedges and beer. That hits the spot!

OOOH Hells is amazing, I'm craving cajun wedges RIGHT NOW so I'm having them for my tea :P
Bubble and squeak sandwich.

I asked my boyfriend what he wants me to cook for him. I have him a list of options of food genres (Asian, Italian, Mexican, or North American comfort food). I have a feeling he might ask for the comfort food. We always eat something Asian-y or Italianesque.
I just wonder what kind of comfort food to make! What do omnivores find as comfort food? I'm thinking maybe I'll make shepherd's pie or macaroni and cheese (vegan, of course).
Peace, love, and happiness.
Here's what perks me up.
Sainsburys Basic instant mash with ground black pepper, Parmazano vegan cheese and vegan mayo in a bowl. Nom nom.
I would like to say that vegan choccy bars work too but the ridiculous cost of them always bums me out again.
Diashel..bubble and squeak is sort of left over cabbage and mashed potato..then i think you fry up some onions and white pepper and salt and put in the cold cooked cabbage and potatoes and turn it every so ofter so that after a good while its crispy cooked and brownly glowing all the way through..the name bubble and squeak comes from the noise it makes...er bubbling and hrrmm..squeaking?? (i may be making that last bit up)
i'm very comforted by hobnobs and liquorice chai atm. infact i just had some..and i tell you what..i might have some more in a bit. yes!!
