woah, you're gonna be able to afford a house in brighton?!
woah, you're gonna be able to afford a house in brighton?!
Hemlock - Thanks sweety that's really thoughtful. It will be a million times better than staying at Emily's mum's in Crawley. The last time we stayed there I went into anaphalaptic shock because she is a seafood junkie. Also she is in denial about mine and Emily's relationship. Unfortunately we can't even consider moving for two years until Emily has finished uni.
Bryzee - I have been saving £10 a week for years so I have a few grand stashed away for a deposit which will grow if I get a new well paid job. Also I'm so fed up with renting. I want a house painted in dark colours not bright white or cream which we cover with posters. It's an ambition I've had since I was about 15. Buy a house and move to Brighton.
The house market in Brighton is not much different from that of Luton and North London and hopefully for me at least, house prices will keep falling and Emily will publish a novel and make loadsa money lol

Does anyone know of anywhere vegan friendly to eat in eastbourne?!! Only we are going there tommorrow and I can't find anything in my veggie Britain guide....
We are off to see raystede animal sanctury today!!!

Ah... so that's where Sian's got to then!! I found out from Hugh who runs the Elephant and Castle (nice pub, but getting vegan food is difficult, but they are trying - seeing as I go there at least twice a month with the guys from work), that she's no longer working at the Royal Oak (so scratch my previous suggestions - which appear to have disappeared anyway).
I've not been to the Snowdrop yet. Might have to have a look in next week. I only get as far as the chippy on South Street, which does fantastic curry and chips for £1.50, but I may just go the extra few hundred yards.
Born to Lose - Live to Win!
If i'm considering renting (doubt i'll have the capital to buy to be honest) in around two years (say, may 2010), when does everyone think I should start looking?
Can't wait to visit Brighton some day!
as soon as you have your first months rent and deposit ready - not much point before then unless you're just looking for areas to suss out?. dunno what it's like now but i rented a flat in kemptown in 1993 and it was horrendous . scarred me for life and actually put me off brighton - but then i'm a country girl really.
That was 15 years ago cobweb! My flat is in Kemptown - it has changed a lot since those days when it was very rough. It is a mixed and vibrant area with the inhabitants of council tower blocks and trendy little cottages living side by side.
Melanie as cobweb says suss out which areas you want to live in before you are ready to move - a great excuse for a few visits over the next year or two. But no point looking for an actual place until you are almost ready to move otherwise you'll see your dream place and lose it because you aren't in a position to move in straight away or within the time they need someone!
Corum I think it was all blokes in the kitchen when I was at the Snowdrop so I've no idea whether your Sian is involved.
I popped into the Beanstalk the other day thinking I'd give their falafel and salad bar a try. Then I left after seeing the almost empty and very uninspired salad selection - some chopped iceberg, grated carrot, tomatoes - and there weren't any falafels in sight (maybe they cook them to order now but I didn't bother to ask).
Has anyone had a meal in there yet? How vegan friendly is it these days? Any reviews?

he-he, yes, it was a long time ago marrers, i haven't been there since!. i had a very bad experience there .
in fact afterwards i departed from england for good and haven't lived there since, that's how bad it was!. i'm sure things have changed .
Hey well the only place that could be worse than where I live right now is Brixton and the last time I checked that was fact lol. Hoodies, crime and shit housing are part of my life so anything better than that andI'm happy - on the plus side that is not why I wanna move to Brighton.
The taste of anything in my mouth for 5 seconds does not equate to the beauty and complexity of life.
Yes Kemptown is lovely Marrers, my son lives there. Brighton is great altogether, I'd live there if I was younger but these days, "out in the sticks" does me and the Brighton bus leaves from outside my front door more or less so I can go in anytime I want.
You and Emily are welcome anytime Emzy

hi guys, my name's adrian (pls call me adi, i don't really like adrian ) i'm new in brighton and i have a few questions if you don't mind:
1. do you know any doctors here who are vegans or understand veganism? i need to see one for a thing i have and i don't want some doctor to give me all kinds of useless drugs. someone who can recommend a treatment that is as vegan as possible.
2. do you know a barber shop/beauty salon that is as vegan as possible? no leather chairs etc.
3. do you know anyone who has a furnished place to rent for 2-3 months or a ''vegan house'' where i could stay with others?
also how can i meet other vegans here? i'd love to get in touch with others from my ''species''.
thank you !
Welcome to the forum Adi. You should introduce yourself to everyone in the Say Hello section!
For finding somewhere to stay have you looked on the notice-board at Infinity Health Food shop? (Actually I'm now wondering if they still have a notice-board since the refit. I imagine they do.)
Also you might want to ask around at The Cowley Club where you will also meet loads of other vegans (and can eat very cheaply).
Hopefully they will update their online list of whats on soon but you can find out more about upcoming meetings, events and socials by popping in (check opening hours and if it is all closed up don't be put off, just knock - they had some hassles a while back and stopped leaving the door open, not sure if that is still the case though). You'd certainly make new vegan friends by volunteering there!
No idea about barbers but I'd love to find a vegan friendly beauty salon myself so I look forward to hearing some ideas on this from others!
Hopefully someone else will have some advice on gps.
We sometimes have Vegan Forum meet ups in Brighton, I'm sure there will be one over the summer! Join the UK Meet Ups section of the forum to see about other meet ups you might be able to get to - there is a picnic in London soon!

I live quite near Brixton and need to get a bus there to use the tube. Even coming home late at night I have never had any problems there.
Between the riots and being a predominantly black area it gets used as a stereotype of a bad area a lot, particularly by the Conservatives, when it is not really that different to any other inner city town.
Michael.
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find me...
thanks for the reply!! i used to have another account on this forum but it got deleted by mistake, i'm not sure what happened, mods told me to make a new one. this is my story:

i actually found a pretty vegan beauty salon but the prices are brutal:

anyone know any good private clinics in brighton? where can i go if i don't have insurance? in romania there were lots of private clinics with GP's and specialists and you would just pay for the visit but i can't seem to find any here .
You might be better to find a mobile hairdresser who would come to your house (and use your vegan hair products) - the leather chair thing is hard to avoid in barber shops.
hey, anyone know if the chairs in terre a terre and food for friends are leather? it would be kind of weird to have something like that in a veggie place but then again they do seem to be fancy shmancy city yuppie "look at me i eat here with the other cool kids cause i've got money" type places...
I'd say very unlikely in Food For Friends - but the easiest way to find out would be to ask them.
From your very narrow and snobbish viewpoint I presume you have never actually been in either one?
I'd be interested to hear where you think it is appropriate for us vegans to eat?
Personally I think they are full of people who enjoy good food, not posers. (You can't even see most people who are dining in Terre a Terre from outside, because they are hidden at the back.) I know the great food is the only reason I and everyone else I know goes there, although some of them can only afford to go as a special treat.
Vegans come in all lines of work, with a variety of incomes (ranging from zero to very well off), from all social classes and backgrounds and we can be found in all ages ranges (from children to the over 60's).
Sorry if any of us can afford to eat at expensive places so don't fit into your 'typical vegan' box.
I for one I am glad there is a variety of places catering for vegans at last, because that certainly wasn't the case in the past.
Idleness is not doing nothing. Idleness is being free to do anything. - Floyd Dell
Food for Friends is not even particularly expensive is it? As far as I can remember from recent visits you can have lunch in there for under 10 quid.
We haven't got a lot of spare cash but we save up to eat at nice vegan places on special occasions like our wedding anniversary - what's wrong with eating at those places
Silent but deadly :p
where is trogs, never even heard of it !
Im going to Sussex Uni in Brighton in Sept and one of the main reasons I loved brighton so much when I visited, was that there are so many places that cater for Vegans.. also I loved 'Inifinity Foods', just an amazing place to shop (I spent half an hour just looking at everything). I cant wait to go there this autumn!
Hi to all Vegans in Brighton,
Can someone helps me to find a room for rent in Brighton in July? My friend and me are from Rome and we will moove in Brighton on 10th of July. We are looking for a room with others vegans. If someone has a room to rent or knows someone that can help us, please let me know.
A lot of thanks,
Daniela
Can anyone please suggest a pub or restaurant near Lewes that meets the following criteria:
(a) open for Sunday lunch and doesn't stop serving too promptly at 2pm
(b) is pretty and rustic
(c) serves vegan food of some kind - doesn't have to be elaborate
(d) has comfortable seats
I would like to try the Snowdrop Inn sometime but from some descriptions I've read on the web the inside may not meet the prettiness criterion, which I think is important to the friend we're taking? (I know it has a dramatic setting.) The friend is trying to think of places as well.
Many thanks in advance.
Only place I can think of is the Snowdrop, sadly... most of the other pubs there aren't that much cop - though since the Royal Oak's owners left for the Snowdrop, I've not been back (might have to this week - as it's round the corner from where I work, as if I need an excuse )
Born to Lose - Live to Win!
Thanks Corum. Perhaps I'll suggest we give the Snowdrop a go if our friend doesn't come up with a twee-er alternative of her own.
It would be v public spirited of you to check out the Royal Oak
Also, depending on how far away from Lewes you're considering... there is the Giant's Rest in Wilmington, where me and Hemlock celebrated our recent wedding anniversary. It's about 7-8 miles away and slightly more expensive (though not by any means to Brighton standards of extortionate) but worth the trip. You'll need to book a table as it is certainly popular - when you're booking, tell them you're vegan and they'll do what they can to help.
Can't recommend it highly enough! http://www.giantsrest.co.uk/
They also do B&B, which when we're really flush, we'll stay at one day.
Born to Lose - Live to Win!
Thanks very much for that; will investigate. It sounds nice and I don't mind pushing the boat out a bit for once (it'll be just before our 20th, gulp, wedding anniversary so we can use that excuse too!).
Main question is whether we can get there before they stop serving food as we'll be at a lecture thing in the morning but I'll give them a ring and check timings.
They do food all day.
Born to Lose - Live to Win!
Yes, thanks, I discovered that. Very civilised indeed.
I've made a provisional booking (which can be cancelled if the friend comes up with an alternative, but I rather hope she doesn't!).
Thanks so much for suggesting the Giant's Rest, Corum - it was just the ticket. They didn't have a huge vegan selection but were very accommodating and what they had was delicious (garlic mushrooms and then a sweet potato, spinach and peanut stew in my case).
We had a drink in the garden, then a nice relaxing lunch followed by a stroll through the pretty village to look at the Long Man (from a distance as we were too full of lunch to walk up there). We were a bit disappointed to see that he was missing some of his bits though!
Glad you found it OK!! We occasionally go up to the Long Man, also to see our friends in the local druid group. After their ceremony, they go to the Giant's Rest afterwards - it was on one of those Sundays that we found out they'd do vegan food!
PS. The Royal Oak in Lewes no longer does Vegan burgers!
Don't think I'll bother going in there again, as the beer isn't much cop!
Shame the Snowdrop is so far away from work to make a reasonable lunch hour wander.

just thought some locals might be interested in an eco festival this weekend:

..but what would they do with all the cows?..
Right guys... help needed in Lewes!!! The aforementioned Royal Oak (Station Street) has had its second change of ownership in less than six months! Very amiable landlady in there now - the couple had a karaoke pub previously but thought it too much noise and tat!
Today, I mentioned the fact that the pub used to sell vegan food and that thanks to my original mention on this forum, people were actually going in there for it - I said that being vegan, I haven't been able to eat there for six months ! She said she would see what she can do... if enough people ask for it, she will change the menu on our behalf!
I doubt I can do it on my own though, but I will have a damned good try!
p.s. despite my earlier post... they sell decent vegan booze!
Born to Lose - Live to Win!
How about providing them a recipe for a good vegan meal corum? My local pub said they'd probably do vegan if I gave them a recipe but I was a bit rubbish and didn't tbh.
"I don't want to live on this planet any more" - Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth
@Corum - would it make sense, then, to try and do at least part of the Brighton meet up in Lewes? A coach load of vegans on the same day would make it worth their while experimenting with vegan food, and some of that might then make it onto the regular menu.
I just got back from spending a few days in Brighton. Highlights vegan food-wise were the breakfasts at Wai Kika Moo Kau and Iydea (opposite WKMK), a vegan BLT at Beanstalk (although, no loos, slightly annoying when you just drank a large coffee!) and Sunday roast at the George. I also have to put a word in for Punktured piercing, since i had to find a piercing shop in a hurry (no, really - the one stud i couldn't put back in on my own came out, and i had to walk around with a normal earring in my tragus for a while) and probably couldn't have found a better one if i'd waited until i got home.
I love punktured!
All the staff are so friendly, both for advice and piercings.
Deffo recommend!!!
Infinity Foods in Brighton are now selling a wide range of the Fresh Organics sandwiches, in the chiller cabinet at the back of the store.

'The word gorilla was derived from the Greek word Gorillai (a "tribe of hairy women")'
I haven't read all of this thread so forgive me if this has been mentioned but I was in Brighton last weekend and had a brilliant sunday lunch at The Sussex Yeoman near the station. We normally go to The George but saw a very good review of this pub. They only had one vegan option - the roast - but it was glorious and knocked the roast at The George into a cocked hat. It was a baked sweet potato stuffed with lentils and walnuts, served with roast potatoes, beetroot, broad beans, fennel, carrots, cabbage, parsnip crisps and red wine gravy. Real gravy. Highly recommended.
i don't think that has been mentioned - thanks EFCliz.

Does anyone knw a good homeopath in Brighton at all?
Thanks
Liz ; 0 )
you could try the Dolphin House Clinic in New Road, they have all sorts of alternative therapists so they probably have a homeopath.

Glee! I'm in Brighton tomorrow for the first time since becoming vegan & I can't wait to go to Infinity Foods! My uncle works there as well....!
vegan and proud.
Just got back from a long weekend of camping in Brighton - which was all kinds of awesome.
Had some great food at both Terre à Terre and The George. Didn't manage to go back to Infinity Foods Cafe for a slice of Banana & Chocolate Chip cake though I hope this wasn't a life changing experience I missed out on.
